Headlines, Headlines, Headlines – 28 March 2009

Funny AIG commercials that might just explain how the butterfly flapping its Collateralized Debt Swap wings turned into the hurricane on Wall Street.  More evidence of London having operated as the global money laundering centre for corrupt bankers, derivative wielding insurance execs and influential Ponzi scheme operators.  And while the UK confronts a future of IMF bailouts, Russia moves in on the Arctic.

  1. jd6969uk, thanks for the excellent article. I wonder if the nascent move to a new reserve currency is a step towards breaking the oligarchy… ditto for proposed legislation to regulate "too big to fail" companies. I sometimes have the foolish/hopeful thought that the Geithner giveaway plan might be intended to distract Wall Street until the govt is in a better position to take them on.

  2. if some entities are too big to fail, then why were they allowed to get too big. where are shouts for the sherman antitrust act to take care of this situation?

  3. Here`s a must read for you Max. I particularly liked the comment "The crash has laid bare many unpleasant truths about the United States. One of the most alarming, says a former chief economist of the International Monetary Fund, is that the finance industry has effectively captured our government. …" I'm afraid that's true of Britain as well.

  4. It’s a very good replacement of the old layout, which was a bit chaotic and harder to navigate in. You could replace “Scandal” with “Scandal&Scoundrels”.

  5. Max, Stacy–

Finally got around to checking out the other blog sites you two link to. The "US Fly on the Wall" WSJ story linked to by LittleSis really got my attention. (I can't read the whole story, b/c I don't subscribe to the WSJ.) Do you two know any more about that? We've had a US government-appointed attorney sitting in on AIG board meetings and on site for 4 years now?! Really? And we REALLY knew nothing about ongoing AIG shenanigans?

  6. Stacy and Max,

Both of you knock me out! You must come to Mardi Gras next year. Frankly, I have learned a great deal about this meltdown from you and your videos. I suspected the hinges were coming off after living through the governmental response to the Katrina flood of my city in 2005. Thank you for providing me more meat on the bone concerning the ongoing mess.

I have two questions for you:

How high do you predict unemployment in the US will go in the next two years?

Do you see technology-driven services such as distance education having a chance of survival going forward from here?

Keep kicking out the jams, my friends.

    Many thanks!
