At around 10 a.m. EDT, a Boeing 747 was seen flying low over the southern tip of Manhattan and at one point was seen circling the Goldman Sachs Tower in nearby Jersey City, N.J.
The U.S. Defense Department was conducting a “photo op” that involved deploying two F-16 fighter jets escorting the 747 in the vicinity of Lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty, said Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Jim Peters.

1) What sort of a “photo-op” requires the use of the air-force 1 backup plane? Is it actually visually identifiable from a distance?
2) Where were the cameras? No helicopters in sight. See a short vid at : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-TPjJ4PXXMc (also, only 1 fighter is visible, not 2 as in some reports).
3) According to web comments, police were told not to advise public. Why not???
Military defense exercise, perhaps, but a photo-op?… that’s ludicrous.
The US government is completely out of control. Photo oportunity?? did they not think the people in those buildings would not be sensitive to a jet circling the area! and those jets?? hmmmm….after drills come attacks. ie. vigilant guardian etc.
Somehow this reminds me of the bankers waving pound notes out the window during the G20 protests.

Btw, Imagine what fun you could have in downtown Manhattan with just a sizable sound system and a recording of airplane noise..speakers in the office on the atlantic side, press play, stroll over to the other side to the sudden crescendo of thundering engines and enjoy the faces
Why unnecessarily scare the public and waste money for a photo-op? Couldn’t PhotoShop successfully pull off any desired photo of, I guess, the President’s backup plane?

FYI, I saw something virtually identical to this last summer just above Philadelphia, maybe in late July or August. Two fighters following a huge plane flying west along the Schuylkill river. But slightly lower in the sky.
They call this one a photo op? It’s such a lame lie it’s funny.
Todays exercise gives the ‘us’ government enough realistic data to create any kind of visual mapping for a future/second 9/11 ha!
This is insane. I won’t even touch on the insensitivity of doing thi over New York. Copmparatively that doesn’t matter.

Clearly this was an exercise of some sort.
We don’t fly a formation of military aircraft including a presidential 747 low over New York City without cause.
It was an exercise. We’ll likely never know anything else about it.

Don’t know why the people filming the plane were laughing. Stoned, maybe? Nervous laughter? Dunno. I would’ve been scared out of my mind, though.
Maybe they’re using airforce one for dropping off some flu virus!

An F.A.A. memo last week said information about the exercise “should only be shared with persons with a need to know” and “shall not be released to the public or the media.”
The breakdown of communication went deeper. Mr. Bloomberg said he first learned of the exercise when his BlackBerry started buzzing with messages from people asking if he knew what was going on.
“First thing is, I’m annoyed — furious is a better word — that I wasn’t told,” Mr. Bloomberg said.
“Why the Defense Department wanted to do a photo-op right around the site of the World Trade Center catastrophe defies imagination,” he said. “Had I known about it, I would have called them right away and asked them not to. It is the federal government, and they can do in the end what they please, but I would have tried to stop it.”
He said that the Police Department and an official in his administration — he did not say who — had not advised him of the exercise.

I’ve always thought that the military helicopters that regularly circle above my part of central London were designed to be deliberately intimidating, but this is breathtaking!

The trouble with all this fear crap is that I’m growing a rather thick skin. It’s like increasing porn immunity, only the most outrageous things are shocking. Bushy wasted/killed all the responsive neurons and like McCain’s VC torture it becomes routine. Thinking about it, it that may be that the tragedy is that we are being zombified so that nothing will shock us. Side effect is that we can’t sense real danger, I don’t know, like trashing the worlds wealth and pushing humanity back to the ‘Nevo’ dark ages.
Remember when Kennedy was battling the pscho general Curtis LaMay who had incinerated 500,000 Japanese civilians in WWII wanted to nuke Cuba and have us into WWIII? There was almost a millitary Junta takeover in the US.
