mmmmm….it was the flu….kinda petty!… life would be so easy if we only concentrated on the things we have no real control over….yeah it’s all a conspiracy, it’s all the fault of something out of my control, that’s a disease i’d really hate to catch… so first world war deaths are much less important than the flu epidemic that followed? (50 mill flu deaths and over 20 mill that died from typhus outweigh the 10 million war casualties? America influenced hitler, south africa and others with it’s basic genocide model. So, if it wasn’t for those pesky diseases america would be one big happy family right now… native americans would be the majority and still in charge. Americans make me laugh – so obsessed with defeating the british if it wasn’t for the help of the indians and the slaves america wouldn’t even exist. ’40 acres and a mule’, ‘return of your ancestral land’…. seems myths and lies have always been the american way…Peace

Max & Stacy, you should deal with the science & facts as regards the die-off of native Americans and not the irratrional identity politics. Natives died off because they had no immunity to our diseases and that was tied to their blood type. That’s the science. Sure there were Indian wars & some massacres, but that’s not the whole story.

The “nobel savage” is a myth. I don’t deny what the evil white man has done but I also don’t believe that the indians were innocent, they just lost in the evil game. I don’t defend the evil that white men have done but all other men are just as evil. People from all nations throughout history have proven themselves to have the tendency to evil, even children. Given the “freedom” men will be …. evil. Real freedom is personal responsibility…. The American Indian male did not and does not, like the average “white man”, want that. They did want “freedom” to ride and hunt and continue to drink and fight…. The elite want it all and will do anything to get it. And some just want a sofa, beer and TV remote. Reading, Writing and Arithmetic etc…..are kinda easy to teach, but there could be a reason they don’t teach listening…probably messes with logic and so promotes real communication. Better people spend time looking for words or phrases they disagree with than trying to connect and seeing the bigger picture.

That is what Jacques Derrida postulated in his book Of Grammatology. Unfortunately, I don’t think this is being proven true in time, do you?

Have you heard about semiotic language? It’s all quite interesting (semiotic is like music or the cycles of the seasons)…The British have British English standard: the smart idea to claim propriety over language. I think it’s fallacious: language belongs to the common man. But it is interesting how the new tyranny looks set to standardize language as a property of the state, marginalizing personal applications.

Do you think the answer is tolerance and respect? We seem to be headed the other way.
Also: hieroglyphic languages are fascinating and how man advances with regards to the differentiation between phonetic and hieroglyphic.

To which Americans do you refer? Is the assumption here that Americans are led by an anglo-saxon contigency? Are we referring to tribal origins of the people in power or to a form of government? To say that white=predatory is racism. The latest meaning for racism in common language is that racism can only occur when the group in power (white) dominates those that have not power (brown). I don’t agree. I think racism is racism.

Seems to me that the British have not been actually accommodating to native people or animals in their prior quest for dominion (the sun never sets). Latin American governments sell out their people as common practice….etc

IMHO those in power abuse those who don’t have power, be it abuse of people or abuse of animals.

And why do we never hear that the nasty derivative trade was carried out in London, through the AIG auspices of course.

Look, we Americans are only people, nothing more or less. The language of science is what enabled people to advance common to a higher level of abuse: the derivatives were, well, derivatives. That is why I asked about math being a changeling language.

@frances snoot – I believe many non-monotheistic religions, in fact, do not practice violence toward animals as many of them are living spirits or gods; India has many communities that eat no meat for religious reasons and many hunter-gatherer tribes kill animals with respect for the life demonstrated in the ritual and with a regard for the balance of nature; when we were watching Ken Burns documentary, that was one of the things that I noted was that if Americans had to live with the wildlife of elephants and wildebeest and giraffes and hippos ranging across the plains in the US . . . how many think they would still be there?

Concerning Max’s comment and the originary names of the buffalo (because Bison IS an arbritrary category, albeit a scientific one) it is interesting to consider what effect language has to play on culture. Is language an extension of cultural norms and behaviour or is language a modifier of cultural norms and behaviour. Renaming the bison/ta tanka to buffalo meant a propriety for the englishspeakers, and a refusal to accept the belonging man has to nature and to the balance of the habitat.

Math is a language too. Divorced from the tongue, not phonetic, and uber-powerful?

What I don’t understand, and I think vegetarian is preferable, is why people ignore the fact that animals are often savage to each other. And Stacy: the myth of the noble savage died with Rousseau, didn’t it? It seems that it doesn’t matter what race: man is cruel to animals and to people because that is man’s nature. Agreed that the financial meltdown was a blue-eyed led phenonemon; not agreed that somehow if we can paint everyone one color life will be aisey.

I would like to point out something/ask a question
I don’t follow the logic that the Indians called them Buffalos
as clearly that is not an Indian word;

Q:
What is the plains indian word for buffalo?

Answer

In Lakota/Dakota/Nakota it is: Ta Tanka.
In Blackfoot it is: ee-nii
In Cheyenne: hotowa’e
In Cree: moostoos
In Crow: Bi Shee

So it seems that the whites called the bison buffalo and then the Indians, when trying to speak English, used the American minnomer.

Does this make sense?

Absolutely. He had a voice and the ability to put into words how screwed up the world was/is in a way that the people understood. Who knows what would be different if he was still alive and had spent all the years in between telling the people how to fight back. I guess he would have made a difference and that’s why he had to got rid of. His song ‘Imagine’ was surely an outrage to the elites – how dare he talk about peace, love and brotherhood and the whole world getting along. Love is the enemy of the elite, a huge threat to their agenda and probably the only way back to sanity and decency and peace.

I say, punish the crime, not the motive. Who can prove what thoughts lead to what actions? The government over here is about to penalize people for ideologies that the status quo decides are extreme.

It is awful that man has such brutal tendencies. Denying people freedom to speak or think will not root out the weeds, it will destroy the foilage.

Excellent, I really enjoyed the banter. Lots of talk about peasants which reminded me of John Lennon’s song: A working class hero (I’ve posted lyrics below – I wish I’d heard/seen those lyrics when I was much younger; life would have made more sense).
Re: Democracy – Plato said something about democracy being only a step away from tyranny. And as for voting, our previous London mayor (Ken Livingston) said: ‘If voting worked it would be made illegal’. In case anyone doesn’t know, something that is just as shocking is that in Korea , dogs ( often their own pets ) are strung up and beaten with a wooden stick until they are dead in order to increase the adrenaline before cooking !
This was shown in a German documentary some years ago … a shocking sight that one will never forget .

@Phil @Dedo – according to the Ken Burns documentary, the buffalo as he and the American Indians interviewed call them were culled at first for the rail companies, as the plains were literally filled with the animal; it then became an easy way to make money as bullets cost 25 cents but the income was $3 per hide; buffalo/bison were similar to elephants in that if you wounded the matriarch, the other buffalo would stand around her quietly and see if she were okay, so the men would easily gun them down; the Indians had vast reservations at this time in places like Oklahoma, however, where buffalo were allowed to roam free as always, then hunters started going down there to kill them and sell the hide; when the Indians fought back the US gave the hunters free bullets to finish off the last of the buffalo

this according to The West anyway

the writings by the Indians the documentary read from were sad; how shocked they were at the barbarism that men would just kill a beast because it was there and just leave the carcasses littering the landscape

As M&S implied in there TAM today, the US Indians were lied to and cheated by the Govt. and Companies that just wanted them out of the way. Most of them were very peaceful people ; the “savage” image was propagated to make killing them off more acceptable.
The occasions where the Indians became hostile were normally the result of direct provocation.

“Schwarzbuch USA” …
… devotes a large chapter to this subject.
But more importantly, the book describes what the US Govt. can do and does to it’s own people , not just the destructive foreign policies !

In the time it took you to read my previous posting, the US government at all levels has given me about 2 USD.

I would so like to flee this sinking ship, to Canada at least….

I have computed my total costs to all levels of government in the US, an exercise everyone in the US should do — and found the governmental costs sum of about 22m USD.

According to my maths, this works out to a 32 year cost of 0.03 USD per second.

However, lacking full knowledge of the conventional US tax system I always assumed that based on this number that I would have to adopt a policy of “if an American does not pay me 100,000 USD to acknowledge their existence they are dead to me”

My number above, according to a relative of mine may not be wrong — just badly guessed.

Their quick calculator calculations seem to indicate that I would have to earn 108,000,000 USD (over 32 years, 2009 USD) in order to pay back to all levels of government in the US the 22m USD.

However, I don’t understand the US tax system nor its tax brackets — so I have no idea if their math or accounting is correct.

Can someone show me a model for paying back all levels of government in the US 22m USD over 30 years keeping the tax brackets kosher…

In any case, I am quite poor — I don’t have 100,000 AUD or NZD to spare to immigrate to Australia or NZ where the finances might be more sensible.

If you are doing this in the wee hours, this may be why your show rambles on. Some thought needs to be put into the ergonomics of when and how you do your NZ show to make it workable and effective.

@max Thinking about money: You could say it would be profitable if one could buy up credit card debt directly. So someone that is creditworthy, now paying 15,5 or 21 percent interest, you pay the debt, you ask 2/3rds of that interest. That would yield more than 10%. I guess this is blocked by the state that considers the debt payoff income, so one needs to find a way to frame the payoff as an investment that is tax deductable..

@max If you unlock this option you can offer decent interest rates and help out at least 15 million citibank creditcardholders. Does that count as dividend?

Nuclear is used as a blocking option, it is expensive, it puts money in the hands of heavy industry, it will run out very quickly.

Focussing on infrastructure is a way to siphon of billions to the concrete pouring kartels. They are extortionist maffia that fix prices. Why not use technology that is lying around, like my solar concept, of ammonia as fuel.

Oil makes plastic, but plastic can be ccracked into oil using microwaves. Another example of a ignored inverntion. It would make the pacific gyris rich oilfields..

The reason why some people do not do anything is because of fear. They do not want the fed on them. The income tax keeps them from rebelling. Another reason why many people do not do anything is because they don’t want the government to fall because they don’t want to loose their military, social security, medicare, GS, contracts…. $$$. The government is so far into the livelihoods of the people that they, understanding enough without excuse, decide to ride the wave until it crashes – all the while hoping to wash up on the beach.

Nice post, very interesting. My experience in talking with my countrymen is that a handful are rightfully pissed off and the majority begin a mental process once I hit certain key trigger words.
The process starts with a glazed over look as if they are recalling the meaning of that word say “patriot” and the negative connotations that go with it as broadcasted by the mainstream media: i.e. militia, para military, anti government! Then when they have processed this much the mental chatter takes precedence and they look for the exit and try to say something witty o ease the tension that they feel for having encountered a “terrorist” (only by today’s media standards). The whole experience is saddening and maddening at times. But then there are the others who I meet on rare occasion who are open and as equally pleased to meet another Human Being interested in self preservation.

I agree with what you are saying but thats where is ends.
This is just what all the Germans who disagreed with Hitler were saying too. So what.
I sent an email to our countries previous treasurer 3 years ago saying that if the world continues on its present course we would be left with half a dozen bankers living an a scorched earth.
These guys who are ‘in the club’ aren’t gonna change the status quo, and they are the powerful ones.
All we can hope is that they get so greedy they end up eating themselves.

We now live in a sort of quasi-capitalistic version of the Soviet Union, where the press parrots whatever the financial Politburo wants declared as the truth, where most of the businesses that matter have been effectively nationalized, and where the wealth of the nation is made off with by those running the place. Kind of like an African or Central American nation, where the treasury is looted by whoever is leaving power, only to be replaced by a different corrupt regime also intent on looting whatever prosperity was missed by their predecessor.

Turns out this time wasn’t so different after all. Human nature hasn’t changed much over a couple hundred years, which is the average life of a democracy.

The big lie is that we live in a free and superior society. I think a more accurate description is that we live in a consumer driven society, where our freedoms have been gladly traded for gadgets and jargon and slogans. We have traded the Bill of Rights for ipods and hybrid vehicles and brown-skinned people we can all agree to despise. We conveniently ignore evidence that we are now in the final stages of the Roman Empire – our dollar is basically good for stuffing pillows and wrapping fish, we feel completely powerless against our ruler/masters, and we are satiated with spectacle rather than outraged by injustice. It’s not a positive state of affairs, and we have exported our living on borrowed time to the rest of the world, which is just now awakening to the idea that Wall Street is willing to sell its soul for a few good bonuses, and subject the entire planet to outsized risk if it means a 25-year old Wharton grad can drive a Maybach and lease a Citation X.

I never understood how past generations could allow things that were obviously evil to take place, without rising up and protesting, without stopping it. It never made sense to me. Ummm, because COINCIDENTALLY, the two with extremely long-living genes are smokers.Longevity is a function of cell reproduction and an internal trigger.

However, if you want to see statistics on how smoking CUTS SHORT lifespans through COPD, Heart disease, artery hardening, stroke… (and the list just runs right past lung cancer and Far beyond) then do some simple googling.

Smokers are also STINKY. I can’t get within ten feet of a smoker because they reek so bad…

I buy my smokes from native reserves at 1/12th the normal cost, besides making me unhealthy, its a very cheap habit. And, i feel like im giving back to the native community in doing so.
