  6. Mises: The Man Who Predicted the Depression

    …By Jeff Harding
    The Daily Capitalist

I’ve been meaning to write a piece on Ludwig von Mises, the greatest economist who ever lived, and, if you will, a hero of mine. This is a piece from the Op-Ed page of the Wall Street Journal by Mark Spitznagel. Spitznagel is the head of Universa Investments and is a protege and partner of Nassim Taleb of Black Swan fame. Those of you who have been following my blog know of my admiration of Mr. Taleb. He and Mr. Spitznagel were also “right,” and Universa made a lot of money for their investors from our economic crisis….

” the greatest economist who ever lived “

  7. I was just thinking,.(I know,.I’ve got a raging headache),.their are some folk out there,
who haven’t the capability to empathize, eg,..psychopaths and varying forms there of
    (read Political Ponerology).
Having just read the book, “The Tyranny of Words”, by Stuart Chase,.I made the connection.
If we, “normal folk”,.make emotional attachment to not only physical objects, but also abstract
    ideology through “word”.
Doesn’t that make the manipulation of “common folk” so much easier for the “special type”
    (psychopaths),by the use of?
After reading through the comment section over the months,.has made me realize how easy
we tend to assimilate our words with our reality, without ever being conscious of it!
Hence, how powerful the media machine is, and it’s ability to change folks “perception” of
what’s real,..you know, the map “is” the territory sort of analogy, thingy.

  16. John Browne on the European Union, Germany’s Startling Role and the how the Monetary Elite is Trying to Come to Grips with the Internet

    John Browne: …
… Today politicians are held in very low esteem. Citizens feel “a curse on both your houses” and tend not to vote. However, in the past five years or so, governments have borrowed against the life quality of electors’ children, not to defend the country but to buy more votes with massive entitlements and wealth distribution. The situation has become so bad that apathy will only make it worse. Gradually, people are being persuaded that they must act by voting for independents, where they can be found.

John Browne: It is a grass roots movement, energized by two of the most powerful of human political emotions: a threat to individual freedom and threat to a way of life. It could hardly be more genuine and threatens to become a revolution.

… Daily Bell: Sarah Palin and others who espouse her views sound like word-for-word Ron Paul libertarians these days. Agree?

John Browne: I agree, they are tapped into the same grass roots feelings and have the courage to express them. They should be careful as to their physical well being.

John Browne: Starting with Kaiser Wilhelm in 1914, Germany failed to see that the two great empires of Rome and England grew not out of international ambition but over time, from the clever strategic defense of national interests. But now the European Union will end up under German control-the empire for which she always yearned

    John Browne: …
… It could lift Europe into a top superpower. It could be great for Europe. However, all Europeans who do not speak German as their mother tongue will be second-class citizens. It is unlikely to be libertarian, which is an Anglo -Saxon idea and decidedly foreign to the elites of central Europe.

Europe is likely to make a futile attempt at becoming a “United States of Europe.” Germany will pick up the pieces, and the EU will become the New German Empire.

John Browne: Yes, spot on, the major dictatorship parties all mouth the libertarian policies of small government, low taxes and free enterprise. All the time, their actions increasingly are manifest in big government, high taxes, massive debt and economic decay. The question is, with the increasingly invasive and draconian powers of big government under the Patriot Act and its equivalent in the UK, will any peaceful grass roots voting revolution or even change be possible? Indeed, the European Union has already suggested making our growing British free-market party, the UKIP, illegal by proscribing it as “extremist” and against the “European ideal.”

Vickers first answer is hilarious. I observe also, that the CNBC anchor’s speech patterns and inflections indicates he might be a heavy drinker.
    =======

The BBC World Service — from the time the UK was still an Empire in 1956 until that Empire in any form had more or less ceased to be in the 1970s — had at least 2 announcers that were heavy smokers.

The BBC WS website, like most international broadcasters — does not keep track of its old presenters. What has become of these people in retirement is unclear to me — but one is at least in and out of hospital due to smoking.

To be blunt, you would have to be drunk to do the US finance system news — as there is mostly very little real news of any use but a lot of time to kill.

Canada’s Biz news network people are — as far as I can tell — as sober as one could ask for. There may not be a lot of news, but the professional dissection of what is out there is important.

The best Seattle can hope for is its citizens surviving the economic downturn without resorting to cannibalism.

The Washington State schools are only good enough to produce people capable of hunting others for meat subsistence … so as a whole Seattle has almost non-existent survival margins.

“If we, “normal folk”,.make emotional attachment to not only physical objects, but also abstract ideology through “word”.”

    @Dedo:
I would recommend you look at the work of Giambattista Vico. Here’s a nice sentence describing Vico’s work:

” ‘Causal reasoning comes late on the stage,’ says Vico. ‘The basic layer of the mind is poetic,’…I love that and I want to repeat it… ‘The basic layer of the mind is poetic, mythic, expressed by universali fantastici,’ which I (James Hillman) translate as archetypal patterns of imagination.”
So just hold on to that Vico observation. The fundamental basis of the mind or the layer of the mind is poetic and mythic.”

    http://www.mythicimagination.org/newsletter_aug05_slattery.html

I don’t necessarily agree that causal reasoning comes ‘late in the game’ of humans as a species, but humans as inherent beings, yes. And I think that the process of thought through entry of metaphor into analogy is interesting but limiting. My own belief is that humans have the capacity to share but also to create individually: that analogy is foisted as you say upon the individual by society. What can one say about the imagination? Collectivist social groupings decimate individual imaginative thought. Here’s an interesting essay by Fink about curiosity; note the limits he would to put upon individual agency:

Since I’m up to bat, I would like to take a swing at this question. The blog seems to operate under a system whereby it is alright to make an assertion if one is represented by someone in the status grouping with true statis. MotherEarth asked me “what I do”, indicating operating independent of a status group would make my views impotent. I disagree completely. The only wave freedom may ride at this point is the rogue, individual wave. The Patriot movement is captured by Corporate interest; the Yes We Canners ditto. All are happily following the carrot, mindless of the stick which looms over their very agency in future.

The rights we deny others we also deny ourselves in future. Does the world suddenly become safe when curiosity and personal agency are caged? Or does the world cease to have any meaning: does life become ritual devoid of meaning beyond obsequies?

When the credit bubble finally collapses, the PTB will still have power and simply declare some emergency, control all media channels, and announce they have a new system (NWO maybe).

The last thing they want is to let the people have a voice and demand an honest money system.

  71. @Lietrum: the problem is, for the standards of living to go up among the poorer masses on the plantet, the standard of living of the average American must go down. This is unfortunately the ugly truth, and one which US leaders are too scared to admit. There are not enough resources on the planet for USA to continue like it has…

  72. Your tag is incorrect for this video — it should be Damon Vickers! Oopsy.

  73. @Susan:
The standards of living of everyone will drop, including the poor. The program so far has not been a redistribution of wealth but blatant stealing. There looks to be a food crisis in the offing next. So add starvation to the billing for the next act.

The ones behind a move to global governance on currency flows are rather delighted in the bonus of a reduced population.

  74. did anyone else get the impression that he was implying that the new world order would be good for the environment?

  75. @Lietrum: I have mixed feelings about this video.

It lays all the blame on the government.
I believe that most of the blame is on the corporations that control the government. We do not really have a government when every regulatory body is over run by people from the corporate sector.

Yes large government is a big problem but at the root of it I am not sure.

  76. Max and Stacy I am going to send Damon to all my friends and say FROM THE IT WAS FUN WHILE IT LASTED DEPARTMENT…

  77. @Gordo,

If the corporations control the government through lobbying or as Max and Stacy point out by financial terrorism, then the government and the large corporations are one and the same. Most politicians are gutless to do what is right and serve only themselves or their benefactors. I liked the video for its call for a return to the constitution and true representative government. It may not be perfect, but at least these kids seem to be willing to stand and change the status quo.

  78. @Susan

I live in a rather rural part of the US and the standard of living has never been too high to begin with. I believe that the standard of living is going down pretty quickly in the US, as evidenced by the growing homeless population and amount of public assistance. I agree that there has been gross over consumption by the US, especially when looking at the McMansion expansion and giant SUV fads, but with the plain stealing that is taking place by the banks the standard of living will go down. I can tell you from the empty store fronts and unemployment in my town that it is already happening here.

It begins with an examination of the mortgage meltdown; traces the history of the corporation; shows how through marketing techniques, our very minds have become corporatized; and offers solutions/suggestions for rebuilding our communities and refashioning ourselves as non-corporatized beings towards the end. My guess is that Max & Stacy followers would be more interested in the chapter dealing with centralized, monopoly currency.

arguably the standard of living has stayed the same in the US since 2001… also real wages havent increased at all. The public debt is so high that these government solutions are just trying to get the public more in debt. They are trying to give a cancer patient (the economy) aspirin and ignoring the real problems – Ron Paul … very true

  85. Government central planning in the U.S. has been going on for awhile. Every street beginning to look the same w/ a McDonalds on the street and a Wal-Mart here and there. You can call this corporatism but if government stuck with the original jobs of just writing laws and enforcing them then this ‘stealing’ from Wall St. wouldn’t be happening. Instead government got so big that the sectors in which it expanded became so corrupted by corporate interests.

As far as Europe countries that can have state health care and other welfare institutions its much easier when they have smaller populations and wide-spread people. If the states weren’t stripped from a lot of the power from the Federal government we wouldn’t be having as many problems like in Health Care… then again thats always up for debate

  86. you are right, we are heading for a global currency which will lead to a new World order when every thing will be centralized under one global dictator. The current trend seem to have been dark if global trends continues. There will be another stock market crash, the facts are: trade is declining among the major industrialized nations, job losses continues, home foreclosure is the order of the day, the fed continues printing debt money if this trend continues and a reordering of the banking system does not takes place there will be a global economic catostrophe will take place on planet earth un common to mankind since his/her existence

from where I sit … same street USA is happening all over the world … you can step into a mall/shopping center and not tell the difference between the USA and some other country …even in quito ecuador !!!!! … the shopping center mall downtown is an exact replica of the version you will find in any city USA with a food court that has a McDonalds, a Taco Bell and a friggin Cinnabon !!! …
