I've been in situations from family birthday parties to talking to managers at Toyota's headquarters. Culturally, when you bow you would think that a deeper bow means showing more respect to the other person. But no matter how hard you try, most Japanese will politely tell you, don't bother. Even if you're the President of the United States, it still looks really dorky. So just slightly bow, shake hands. And then go to dinner.
