Stacy Summary: From Janet Tavakoli. Great piece.
On October 25, 2009, when BBC’s Evan Davis interviewed him, Buffett surprised me : Click here to view the eight minute video. It started out so well, but after six minutes the interview went sideways. [Not shown in this clip Buffett said his $5 billion investment in Goldman Sachs’ preferred stock (plus free warrants) last year was, in part, a bet on a US government bailout.1 He thought the U.S. taxpayer got a good deal, but we got a worse deal than Buffett negotiated, and as I explain here, I feel taxpayers got chump change.]
@ 3:14 min: Buffett explains that if there were only 50 people on a fertile island, we wouldn’t take the five smartest people out of the 50 and give them the most money and tax breaks for trading rice futures and speculating: “Hell no! We’d get everybody producing rice. The idea that people that move money around are some favored class—and they are in this country, even in terms of taxes—strikes me as getting pretty far away from where we should be.”
@ 6:00 minutes: Buffett claims shareholder losses obviated moral hazard. Not true. In control frauds (first identified by William K. Black), financial institutions are destroyed, and shareholders lose. Only the agents: CEOs, CFOs, and highly paid employees are enriched. Unlike Buffett, these agents are “stewards,” not major owners. Moral hazard remains an intractable problem.
@ 6:25 minutes: Buffett claims taxpayers have not bailed out anybody, because tax rates have not gone up (yet), and “tax receipts are way down this year.” Chinese and Japanese buying U.S. government bonds have bailed out financial institutions. Not true unless we default or destructively print inflationary dollars. Tax receipts are down because of unemployment. U.S. taxpayer credit bailed out financial institutions, and we will have to pay back our debts.
Imagine this scenario: Warren grabs my credit card and charges twelve suits. When I object that I don’t want to bail out his wardrobe, he chuckles and says, don’t worry, you haven’t paid anything yet. The bank that issued the credit card bailed out my wardrobe, and it hasn’t even had time to charge you interest on my purchase.
When I protest that I’ll have to eventually pay off both the balance and accrued interest, he tries flattery. You are so productive that by the time you have to pay this off, you’ll have so much more wealth that you won’t even notice these charges. You’ve always been good for it before, and you’ll figure out how to pay!
Don’t fall for it.

I kinda hear ya too… just try fitting those words on a xmas card… and yeah as a parent myself I’m not so obsessed about converting children to my religious, political or economic views… personally I think it’s more about striking a balance and how far you are prepared to go with your beliefs… which is why I usually prefer art and or allowing people the freedom to reflect and arrive at their own conclusions about life… also I don’t think it’s very sensitive to keep mentioning persons name or a an individual case to make a point with, so feel free to respond… but this is discussion starting too carry too much emotionalI weight and I will not be mentioning it again to you!!!

A Mad Rush as Gold Bugs Get the Boot
…The movement of gold from HSBC has created a stir not only among the bank’s clients, but also among owners of warehouses and vaults around the country.
“I have never seen any relocation like this,” says Jonathan Potts, managing director of FideliTrade, the parent company of the Delaware Depository Service Co., which has two warehouses in Wilmington. FideliTrade’s two vaults have been filling up at an unprecedented pace, in part because it is taking in metal that has been ejected by HSBC….

America’s Broken Politics
…Conclusion: We do not know if America, unlike Rome, can return to the roots of her greatness. But the Internet itself has certainly provided millions (not only in America) with a powerful learning tool. Those interested in culture and polity – and how societies function properly – have relearned the lessons of minimalist government and the value of honest money (gold and silver) in the past two decades. These great lessons may in fact provide a launching pad for the reinvigoration of America and the West if one is to come. Perhaps, then, the Guardian has it backwards. The problems that America faces are not going to be solved by government but by an expansion of freedom.

Silver definitely beats plastic!
@ Phil – The war surtax is a political ploy–and a good one at that. The point is to pressure the WH and those who support troop escalation/continuation of our occupations to explain to the public how we’ll pay for the wars. Focusing on the financial end of it could very well lead to further backlash against escalation among the public. The majority has already soured on Afghanistan.

I just saw this ad on TV for the 1st time, only on the TV, the ad had “Sponsored by Coca-Cola, SAP & Siemens” at the end of it. It struck me as exceedingly ballsy–esp. for Coca-Cola given the ease with which critics can call out the hypocrisy of them stealing water from the poor in India and worsening the already-present water crisis there.

545 PEOPLE
By Charlie Reese
Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.
Have you ever wondered, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits? WHY do we have deficits?
Have you ever wondered, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, WHY do we have inflation and high taxes?
You and I don’t propose a federal budget. The President does.
You and I don’t have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does.
You and I don’t write the tax code, Congress does.
You and I don’t set fiscal policy, Congress does.
You and I don’t control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.
One hundred Senators, 435 Congressmen, one President, and nine Supreme Court Justices equates to 545 human beings out of the 300 million Americans are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.
I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.
I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a president to do one cotton-picking thing. I don’t care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator’s responsibility to determine how he votes.
Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con, regardless of party affiliation.
What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits. The president can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it.
The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House? Nancy Pelosi. She is the leader of the majority party. She and fellow House members, not the president, can approve any budget they want. If the president vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.
It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million can not replace 545 people who stand convicted — by present facts — of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can’t think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.
If the tax code is unfair, it’s because they want it unfair.
If the budget is in the red, it’s because they want it in the red …
If the Army & Marines are in IRAQ, it’s because they want them in IRAQ
If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it’s because they want it that way.
There are no insoluble government problems.
Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like “the economy,” “inflation,” or “politics” that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.
Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible.
They, and they alone, have the power.
They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses.
Provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees.
We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!

Here’s my watered-down angle for mainstreamers:
“I think the pressure of “saving the planet” was getting to these guys. They didn’t want any competition because they thought it would slow down the UN IPCC response and hinder international cooperation. They experienced some problems with their software development (gridding etc), but were under such great pressure that they had to fluff some very tiny superficial aspects, eg data normalization, etc… In the future, Chinese whales will celebrate their exploits. etc”

@Y’all
I don’t come on this site to ever promote hate… and I have never asked the most ignorant and often asked question er… why aren’t people more angry???
@Adam c
Why are you quoting yourself? Emails or not, the CO2 part is beyond dispute. How do you manage to stay motivated?
@Gordo
You can’t make all scientific data and methods public all the time, because that is these people work on for a living, and they would not be able to protect their intellectual property. If they publish on the other hand their assertions get peer reviewed, so the scientific method does all you want to achieve.
@Gordo
Thanks for your support. I’m only asking to be convinced with science. I haven’t closed my mind to anything. Given the stakes, why would I??
@Mother Earth
Yes, I listened to the full interview on YT yesterday and bookmarked the Telegraph article today. I did indeed copy the Telegraph’s quotation in full on this forum.
I’m only really on the look out for evidence FOR CO2-driven climate change. The ‘scandal’ is interesting but ultimately even if some scientists are disciplined for wrong-doing, that still doesn’t make up for the lack of empirical data for the AGW hypothesis. I’m not into these fashionable ad hominem attacks, but I will read and distribute news of ongoing events making little commentaries as I go.
Thanks for the link to your website. Reading now…

I have no idea where that apostrophe came from! (article’s) Sorry…it would be nice to be able to press “Preview” so a post can be proofed and edited.
Anyway, at some point we wake up and wonder why no one was noticing that there has been this huge military buildup going on, and why no one was thinking that it would escalate. Seems like people who are not directly involved in some way think of the wars as some football games going on “over there.” IMO the US government cannot afford to keep up even what it is already doing. Perhaps it will soon become obviously too expensive to US taxpayers????
regarding that sad interview buffett gave to bbc, aka, buffett’s world wide tour to garner goodwill as he spouts off about how unfair things were as he rapes america…..well i guess in the worse financial crisis since the great depression some of the most UNLIKELY of folks will be pushed to the breaking point in to doing some of the most UNTHINKABLE things.
todd, just what are brk shareholders and the other “rice” growing members on mr buffett’s fictional deserted island supposed to “enjoy” from this video?
it appears that buffett has turned into nothing more than a D.C. banking lobbyist gun for hire spewing ridiculous justifications for the largest transfer of wealth to the most undeserving financial terrorists in the history of the world!
this interview only proves that once you lie about something, you find yourself having to continue a long series of even bigger whoppers that gets you further and further deeper into the muck. is that in the owner’s manual?
come on, buffett’s argument that the “taxpayer has not bailed out the banks, it is the japanese and chinese that have paid for it,” is like a child saying to his parents “we have all the money we want mommy and daddy cuz we can withdrawal all we want using that card at that bank cash machine…its the bank’s money!”

absolutely, the govt’s actions to backstop the CommerPaper and mny mrkts, and FDIC increasing deposit insur and the like was ABSOLUTELY essential to the moms and pops of AMERICA, but to TERRORIZE the avg joe to justify WALL ST’s/BUFFETT’S THEFT via unwarranted subsidies to the WALL ST & TBTF BANKS BOMBERS of the financial system is despicable behavior and the MOTHER OF ALL MORAL HAZARD.
what we have here ladies and gentlemen, is an investor who was TOO BIG TO FAIL and who made the conscious choice to compensate for MASSIVE MISTAKES IN NOT KEEPING CLOSER TABS on his investments in the financials and elected the route of TAXPAYER BAILOUTS to keep these firms afloat. this is entirely inconsistent with what buffett has preached for many years and will serve as a massive STAIN ON HIS LEGACY.
you would think the EMBARRASSMENT and SHAME he must be feeling for acting in this way and putting forth such RIDICULOUS arguments and analogies would soon force some sort of repentance or change in behavior.

@ Adam — really? Solidly skeptical as early as 04/05?
Honestly, because I’m such a lousy person, it’s not something I was following heavily in the mid-00′s… although, around ’03/04 I was a little freaked out by news about methane-hydrates & peat bogs thawing (etc) and the thought that the release of lots of methane could accellerate “greenhouse effect”. (In NZ, because of the dairy industry, methane is #1 greenhouse gas.)
Earlier this year, when I heard (what I now realize was CRU) saying they had deleted or lost so much data that others couldn’t do independent models to compare with the UN’s, I started to get suspicious…

@Tofu
Well, I really couldn’t have followed all the threads before reading the first Skeptics Handbook: http://bit.ly/5ilJaD (The second for completeness: http://bit.ly/5GAUmy)
Then it was a case of looking out for some actual evidence rather than the over-reported flawed computer-models based on obsfucated data.
Then of course asking others for their perspectives and dismissing silly claims that it wasn’t my right to ask for evidence, despite being a fellow human being with a confirmed interest in science via a BSc qualification. Not that that warrants anything.
Also, I worked on a funded research project a while back (2005) investigating the switching to algae to mitigate against fossil fuel reliance and to stall global warming as it was known back then.
Not sure how that funding came about. Perhaps the term Global Warming in the research proposal helped secure it??

All that and STILL no evidence FOR CO2-driven climate change. The burden of proof for that theory still rests firmly with the AGW theorists.

The Australian — Hot and bothered
‘Opposition Senate leader and Australia’s unofficial chief climate change sceptic Nick Minchin says the email scandal has strengthened a point he has long made.
“The leaked emails certainly substantiate the point I’ve been making that the scientific debate as to the small degree of global warming in the latter part of the 20th century is far from settled,” he says.’

Dr Ball attacking a closed-shop peer-review/publishing cabal of 42 scientists…
“It confirms suspicions that I’ve had working in my thirty years of climate science. I saw the hijacking of climate science particularly by computer modelers and then by a small group associated with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change….”
“What you’ve got here is confirmation of the small group of scientists who, by the way, Professor Wegman who was asked to arbitrate in the debate about the hockey stick, he identified 42 people who were publishing together and also peer-reviewing each other’s literature. So there’s a classic example of the kind of thing that bothered me. About twenty years ago, I started saying ‘Well why are they pushing the peer review?’..And now of course we realise it’s because they had control of their own process. That’s clearly exposed in these emails.”
“On a global scale it’s frightening because this group of people not only control the Hadley Centre, which controls the data on global temperature through the Hadley Climate Research Unit but they also control the IPCC and they’ve manipulated that. And of course the IPCC has become the basis in all governments for the Kyoto protocol, the Copenhagen accord and so on….”

The Dog Ate Global Warming
http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=ZTBiMTRlMDQxNzEyMmRhZjU3ZmYzODI5MGY4ZWI5OWM=&w=MA==
‘Warwick Hughes, an Australian scientist, wondered where that “+/–” came from, so he politely wrote Phil Jones in early 2005, asking for the original [surface temperature] data. Jones’s response to a fellow scientist attempting to replicate his work was:
“We have 25 years or so invested in the work. Why should I make the data available to you, when your aim is to try and find something wrong with it?” Reread that statement, for it is breathtaking in its anti-scientific thrust. In fact, the entire purpose of replication is to “try and find something wrong.”
The ultimate objective of science is to do things so well that, indeed, nothing is wrong.’
Why not just publish the data?? Would save a lot of bother.

@ Mother — I have a summary of some quotes, angles here if you’re interested. You said you looked through the ZIP file, but I’m not entirely sure how much:
http://wp.me/pDCN5-tf
Before you cry “bullshit”, or others cry “smoking gun” we’ve gotta wait for outsider climate-modelers to go through the code and datasets and run their own simulations to see if there has been any real fraud in terms of manipulation of data. That would be devastating to IPCC. And (still in early days) multiple quotes do tend to support the theory that CRU’s public findings and its private datasets and computer modeling are, at the least, not of the same degree of accuracy.
Again, no Schadenfreude in reporting this…

Be specific. This Professor Ball attacks ‘peer review’ (the de facto process of science) ‘ochestrating’ (what do you expect from an organization) and correcting/filtering scientist and data, which is also the proces. If the alligation is not specific it’s just sad fear mongering.
@ Mother Earth — re: “climategate” CRU hack
Must disagree. There’s plenty in the files — they’re still being picked apart. Latest quotes — yet to reach MSM — are support-worker comments buried in code, etc. This story is going somewhere… in the UK they’re talking criminal investigation over Phil Jones’ FOIA deception/deletions etc.
Starting to be picked up by TV news:

I’m not a skeptic/denier (not really excited about the scientific debate; that’s not where the action is) but from a PR perspective this is one of the biggest “disasters” ever, and it’s just starting. Damage control spin has been pretty weak so far.

And if we conserve all life on earth in its present state,..maybe we can halt any natural progress,…would be fun for everything to stay the same huh!
The planet as an emergent organism,..bollocks to that! : )
@ Mother Earth – Is he also a faux Christian? I have to infer that from his understanding of what casting pearls before swine means.
Anyway, I think Max is right: AJ deserves some credit for waking people up to real scandals, and for doing so before many folks have the guts to go there, themselves. But IMO, he’s off base at least as much as he’s on target, and I don’t consider him a valid source of info. or have all that much respect for him.
@ Gordo – I’m with you. Last year, I had people who insisted on buying me stuff purchase ungifts for me from Heifer and Oxfam. I got a couple dozen chicks, a flock of geese, a goat, and some water for irrigation. There were some family members who were put off by the idea of giving to poor people instead of buying me something that I didn’t need. (The need that some people have just to give something–whether wanted, unwanted, needed, or not–is pretty strong, I guess.) This year, I’m just going to tell them to take whatever $ they felt the need to spend on me, buy food with it, and take it to local food pantries. We’ll see how that goes over.
@ Mep ,Mother Earth
Mish and Denninger also jumped on that cherry picked data used to discredit GW.
Pathetic coming from those 2.

He is hyping nothing. I have the files, it’s like the devils verses, nobody reads them (there are 1073 emails), its symptomatic of an indiscriminate audience. @ gonzomarx,
That supposed quote from Marx’s Das Kapital is an old hoax that was doing the rounds last year. Anywhere I’ve seen it posted that fact is acknowledged.
I assume that’s also the case wherever you copied and pasted it from, but you provide no source.
I’ve pasted the most relevant parts of Marx’s definition of ‘fictitious capital’ (Ch29, Capital Part III) and his description of a ‘credit crisis’ (Ch.30) quite a few times. Most recently here:
http://maxkeiser.com/2009/11/19/video-the-keiser-report-markets-finance-scandal/#comment-49354
It’s a lot more relevant than the pseudo-Marx quote, but oddly only the fabrication appeared in the media at the hight of the crisis last autumn.
The views of the real Marx remain verboten, but I’ve seen them paraphrased or plagiarised by lesser commentators (see Irving Fisher’s coy introduction to his theory of debt deflation) without disclosing original source — presumably he’s still taboo.

@ME Re: JFK
Came across this the other day…
“On June 4, 1963, a virtually unknown Presidential decree, Executive Order 11110, was signed with the authority to basically strip the Federal Reserve Bank of its power to loan money to the United States Federal Government at interest. With the stroke of a pen, President Kennedy declared that the privately owned Federal Reserve Bank would soon be out of business. The Christian Law Fellowship has exhaustively researched this matter through the Federal Register and Library of Congress. We can now safely conclude that this Executive Order has never been repealed, amended, or superceded by any subsequent Executive Order. In simple terms, it is still valid”.

Or you’re like their cameraman. Either way, it’s cool if you guys are posting on this message board.
@Bonn
…and I remember every year people would get all worked up over the opportunity to attend a conference where Buffett could hold court and muse about his homespun wisdom. Just a money making ploy. But the plebes wanted a hero. He’s just as cunning and guile as they come, but maybe that’s not so bad. It’s just what he is and it’s apparent now.
@Paul
What are you talking about and who are George and Ledbed?
@paul
like I said you lot are worse off than I thought…er the clue was in the’I thought’ bit… here in the uk that kinda stuff would be considered weak… but than we wouldn’t have the stars and stripes rammed in our face everywhere we go!!!
@ Paul
About Buffett…how sad in years past we regarded him as a sage, and now it’s ever so clear that he’s just like every other cutthroat salesman. He’s smarter to abstain from commenting.
So True Paul he was a wolf in Sheeps clothing
I use to think “Man that guy is smart” until 2008 mid i think
little did i know that that F$%&er was on the inside all the time . I just get disgusted . I hope we can resolve this ammicably in Just Courts.
But I guess its only gonna be wishfull thinkinking.
Cause only 5 % of the world has Internet access full time i guess.
So in all Likely hood they gonna get away with it.
@ME
like I said stick to your charts!!!
@Youri
Who are you? George? Ledbed?
Protesting Students Barricade Doors at UCLA http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local-beat/UCLA-Protest-Arrests-70404787.html
@Supergeek
Correction…that skit is ballsy for SNL. Though SNL has lampooned U.S. presidents of the past, I do not think it was as scathing as it was this past weekend. You have not only a criticism of the president, but an obvious slam on the U.S. as a country.
All that being said, the skit would not have been pulled off so well without Nasim Pedrad, a UCLA grad!

NIA was in LA today producing our new documentary when we got word that 10 minutes away from us, violence broke out at UCLA where they are protesting 32% inflation in college tuition.

“Owners of capital will stimulate the working class to buy more and more of expensive goods, houses and mechanical products, pushing then to take on more and more expensive credits, until their debt becomes unbearable. The unpaid debt will lead to bankruptcy of banks, which will have to be nationalised, and the state will have to take the road which will eventually lead to communism.”

@Paul – I’ve done the same thing . . . I think that’s worse though as I actually posted the item . . .
I can’t believe I succumbed to the “1st” phenomenon. I couldn’t help myself, but I loathed every moment. Anyhow, I’m still reeling over the Obama/Hu Jintao skit on SNL. Very ballsy.
1st…maybe?
