[1092] The Truth About Markets – 19 December 2009

Stacy Summary: Recorded live from Resonance FM! Apparently the first minute or two is missing from this recording, but hopefully that’s not too bad. We had an awesome time doing it live and also we had the biggest surprise when Anna and Adam of The Veggie Table showed up with a gift of fresh made halloumi burgers that were out of this world good!

I was deeply moved by Max’s thoughts on PAIN and christmas, I just had to grab it and stick on facebook. Here’s it is. Top clip and great show from Max and Stacey.
Wishing you a pain free christmas.
    Love speirsy

  2. that show was brilliant .

Best show i have heard from Max and stacey in ages

    great stuff ;)

  3. Was just thinking of Max’s faeces eating comment-in ireland they have a saying that someone who is arrogant /stupid is a ‘gobshite’ – ie talks shite. Shite comes out of his/her mouth……. this seems to me to be accurate……..ask a person who is suffering the effects of flood or drought and you know climate change is happening-what we do and what word we create as a result is what is pertinent

  4. Max’s analyis of the new class system and how to work it is brilliant. Also his thumbnail of derivatives is brilliant. Very sharp, very witty- live suits Max – do more man!

Re climate change no one ever mentions the ‘carbon spend’ of the military, both in production and use i guess this far outweighs use by us poor ordinary gobshites -

Re. the live show, I didn’t like it that much. Too much silly jabber at the beginning – although Max often makes me laugh -he sometimes comes across as a little mad, which could put new listeners off. I much prefer it when you guys talk shop. That’s where the knowledge is power you spoke about comes into play.

There was little comment on current affairs. Pity – coz Stacy’s input usually really moves the broadcast along interestingly.

I didn’t like the live calling in part, each caller said how long they had been listening to your shows – they sounded like disciples – and it didn’t interest me. I wanted content. Instead, I found myself wondering for a second if your first, awe-struck caller had mistaken you for Alcolics Anonymous. The last caller’s reference to the article in the New Statesman interested me – although this is the kind of thing Stacy usually brings up. The show is cleaner and better quality without callers.

I enjoyed listening more towards the end.

Re. MSNBC’s Dylan Ratigan “interview” – politics aside, that guy was rude.

  6. William of the North

    Hey Max and Stacey,

I drove down to Key West yesterday.

    Guess what. It’s still there.

    Not under water at all.

  7. MAX, STACY, CHANGE THE GD RT ANIMATED BACKGROUND ITS DRILLING THROUGH MY RETINA AND INTO MY HYPOTHALAMUS, I COULDNT GET FURTHER THAN 1:30 ON THE KEISER REPORT.

  8. The call from Alex was lovely, catching up with Max again. :)

I agree the idea of an ethics board is misguided, effectively handing over the power (and responsibility) of judgement to a higher power.

Max’s suggestion of de-capitalising unethical corporations (karmabanque) has the virtue of empowering anyone to judge. It has the potential for gaining traction, if it were ever to reach a critical mass; and as a show of strength, offering the prospect of a victory which would alter the balance of forces.

How would karmabanque deal with a Fed induced *rally* in bank stocks? Go long kick-backs, on a Corruption Index, to identify targets ripe for handover to the shorts for boycott?

  9. how are we ‘climate change skeptics/deniers’
    the copraphagists?

Why not trade shit eating credits?

  10. @David:
Trauma inhibits thinking, therefore learning is affected, therefore we are unable to evolve. You cannot learn when traumatised, the capacity to learn relies on being loved, love changes your brain organically, one evolves.

“It seems more than coincidence that three of Freud’s revolutionary understandings followed his personal experience of loss & trauma.”

    http://www.psychoanalysisdownunder.com/downunder/backissues/7/664/665

  11. @Phil/Germany:

    …$290 Billion for 6 weeks!

I heard/read somewhere in the past 24 hours that the price of gold correlates with the rise in the debt ceiling. If anyone knows where I got that I would love to find it…

Somehow even thinking about this is making me think of what @David wrote in the same thread @Freud:
come to think of it he was also a very funny person, on his deathbed according to his nephew Clement Freud he asked Clement if he wanted to buy his pocket watch.

    Excellent.
    (reminder to laugh at self)

  12. Frances I’m not sure how I contradict myself, are you not aware of the death of the author, Freud and the work of Freud are seperate entities.
Furthermore who said Freud was unhappy, from all my accounts he comes across as a warm, affectionate, very thoughtful person, and happy to boot. This is clearly demonstrated in his letters to Fleiss, come to think of it he was also a very funny person, on his deathbed according to his nephew Clement Freud he asked Clement if he wanted to buy his pocket watch.

  13. you guys realize how much better you sound with professional audio? You almost sound too good, like too smooth and sweet

  14. @David:
You contradict yourself in that Freud was a sincerely unhappy man and yet you quote his words as though the man had experienced no ‘trauma’ in his life to affect his reason.

Happiness has nothing to do with reasoning ability.

  15. Thank you, Daniel S. Excellent.

Here are two perspectives to contrast in one short video. On one hand you have someone with money and power. He is followed by the US Secretary of Energy, a scientist who offers his own approach.

Is carbon trading about money and power or about science?

  16. It could be argued that in the greater scheme of things war did more good than bad, (if your a fucking madman).

But whatever you do leave the pissheads alone, some compassion please and less of the puritanical, Keiser with your Scotch/Kraut heritage, just remember Martin Luther was all in favour of buring witches. It appears that for many modern life is unbearable.

‘From the very beginning, when life takes us under its strict discipline, a resistance stirs within us against the relentlessness and monotony of the laws of thought and against the demands of reality-testing. Reason becomes the enemy’. ( Freud.)

I enjoyed the phone-in bit, you should try and make it a regular part of the show. The caller Mike spoke of some article which if I understood correctly asserted that we can affect change through trauma, what an absurd and dangerous idea.
Trauma inhibits thinking, therefore learning is affected, therefore we are unable to evolve. You cannot learn when traumatised, the capacity to learn relies on being loved, love changes your brain organically, one evolves.

Is it true Tony Blair endorses climate change, oh dear thats most unfortunate.

  17. Dear Max, Stacy and Community: One of the tools of the propagandists of destruction is that progress is driven by evolution which they define as survival of the fittest. This idea is, first, a tautology, since whatever survives is thus the fittest even it is not the best evolutionary solution.

This notion of whoever rules is chosen by “nature” or “God” to rule, this is what we hear from Goldman Sachs Messiah Blankfein.

But what if this whole idea is upside down and we have actually been devolving as people and a society and now have the worst ruling instead of the fittest?

Certainly Max’s tirades are about the crumbling of social standards of ethics and knowledge and law suggest this.

In my research, I learned there was a time in the ancient past when wealth (the word roots in idea of balance and social commonwealth) not riches (which roots in the idea of power) ruled and even ordinary people ate gold for dessert.

I am writing a book about this and invite the community to check it out on my website, http://www.TheHinJew.com and post comments there. My book is called “God Doesn’t Belong to Anyone: The World Before Religion or How The Ancient Hebrews Left Ancient India & Wrote the Bible.”

  18. Dear Max, Stacy and Community: The ironic problem with the entire climate change debate and those who support the current effort to force environmental change by laws and targets, is that is nothing in the ecology works that way.

This is the problem with the whole approach of change-by-regulation. It creates conflict around artificial constructs – as we saw in Copenhagen – while accomplishing little. Meanwhile, ordinary people and businesses act in millions of individual ways that are less damaging to the environment.

Regulations serve those who write, enforce and legally challenge them. But because each person and situation is different, regulations will both cause unnecessary and rigid expenses and encourage people to try and avoid those costs and structures. These results create a condition known as moral hazard in which the rewards go to those with the least results and those who innovate are penalized.

So people respond with time, money and innovation to one set of regulations only to have those regulations changed by later governments that then force people and businesses to repeat the same process or dodge it. The problem is not with the goal but the approach and that flawed approach is what caused all the problems inside and outside the conference at Copenhagen.

It is obvious the world can agree on the need for general standards of environmental improvement. It is the one-size-fits-all approach and monotone on carbon emissions that has triggered the global migraine around the issue of climate change.

A different approach would encourage a broad range of initiatives without penalties or strictures.

For example, if a farmer wanted to avoid using chemical cleaners or even costly commercial organic ones and decided to clean his floors with cow manure, that would be recognized as a very good alternative since cow manure is remarkably antiseptic. Indeed, under the current “game” of environmental “points” why aren’t countries that use less chemical pollution in agriculture given recognition instead of solely focusing on CO2? Why aren’t “points” awarded for reducing or cleaning up commercial waste given the enormous island of junk floating in the Pacific Ocean?

Indeed, the entire focus of the conference is wrong-headed because there is no way to realistically predict climate change. There are infinite changes and forces acting on earth every second and more changes and forces from the solar system outside the earth. These are way too complex for accurate modeling.

Recently, for example, Canadian scientists discovered ancient permafrost in the Arctic that survived many periods of global warming and cooling because of micro differences in the climate of land just a few feet apart. The same is true of our Canadian shield. Those are rocks – like those on other continents – that have remained the same since they were created despite the break up of the last supercontinent Pangaea 250 million years ago, and the shifting of land to create entire new continents. Could those results have been predicted? What numbers are assigned to those micro-differences and how would we create a mathematical formula for a computer to measure their butterfly effects?

Ideas of a sudden Climate Armageddon only encourage panic. And when people panic they can’t make good decisions because the rational part of our brain is physically overwhelmed by emotional chemicals telling us to fight or run. So what we saw at Copenhagen was people fighting and walking in and out.

Think globally but act in your own way to be less damaging on the local level.

If everyone at Copenhagen had simply agreed that we all need to reduce waste and pollution and encourage a truly friendly attitude towards each other and the environment each in their own way – instead of polluting the environment of debate with rhetoric – they might have actually accomplished something.

  26. the top is in for central banking according to this
    http://globaleconomicanalysis.blogspot.com/2009/12/time-magazines-kiss-of-death.html
let’s take the opportunity to push it down by starving the bankers – I think it will be easier than many expect – simply because they are falling from such a great height

  27. we need bank share prices to coverge on zero:

surely boycotting the banks is the best way? politicians will find it harder to bail them out if they have no customers. And shareholders will find it difficult to find reasons to invest if they have no customers. we should examine alternatives such as Tescos bank and gold traders to see of they are part of the same system or not, and if not then promote them – if Tescos bank gets off the ground of course. There have been bank revolutiions in the past, for example mutual societies – and that is exactly the kind of thing we need. e.g. Nationwide building society in UK probably gets bailed out behind the scenes but is it doing the same harm? it is speculating and earning trading profits (apart from the top executives of course)? It is being run not for the mutual account holders but the directors and staff, but surely that is better than being run for traders?

  29. PS@Gold …

    …$290 Billion for 6 weeks!

    http://apnews.myway.com/article/20091216/D9CKL24O0.html

To all; while yesterday was a bad day for the metals and shares the Congress voted for a $290 Billion hike in our nation’s debt ceiling. WOW! $290 Billion! I can remember back 20 years ago when WOW would have been the response. But what makes this situation beyond stupid is the fact that this MASSIVE amount of money (it was considered massive until about 18 months ago) will last only 6 WEEKS! Congress needed to pass this or face the “alternative”, bankruptcy. To put this in perspective, the U.S. will borrow the equivalent of 3 years GLOBAL Gold production just to keep the doors open for 6 more weeks. If I used DOMESTIC production numbers, they are borrowing 30 years worth in current Dollar terms to survive a mere 6 weeks!…

  30. GOLD .. must read

The CFTC have many problems to contend with. They are going to have problems explaining how the ETF increased their inventory by 4 tonnes, over in London England, as the bankers here shorted gold

    at the Comex.

Here is famed John Brimelow with his analysis on the open interest which is identical to mine:…

    http://harveyorgan.blogspot.com/

  31. @Cal doctor – Truly outstanding and should be adopted as a template for all tv interviews with politicians who refuse to answer straight forward questions!!!

  32. California Doctor

MSNBC’s Dylan Ratigan questions why publicly traded medical insurance companies have had 10-15% inflation of stock price over the past two weeks.

He accurately points out to the DEM congresswoman that the bill essentially gives a bailout to these companies.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghINDVKWogI

Then, she tries to do her talk points without answering his question.

So, he cuts her mike and kicks her off the show!

    OUTSTANDING.

I’d like to see more TV shows slice and dice the idiot politicians like this!

  33. I can’t tell what Max believes about climate or why.
He’s too involved with his feces fetish to bother clarifying or explaining it.

If we learn that ozone depletion is what depleted the multiyear ice in the arctic, and that CO2 has negligible effect on global climate, people are gonna feel pretty dumb about wasting so much money and giving up so much power to the racketeers behind a carbon trade system while ignoring real solutions.

Nobody in the carbon trade camp is talking about the health of ecosystems, watersheds, biodiversity, toxins, etc. So it isn’t an environmental issue.

None of them are addressing the issue of climate or it’s “solution” in terms of the poor. Probably because it would highlight the need to localize economies and decision-making rather than centralize it on a global scale.

Until I see real evidence which has yet to be presented by anyone, with all the bankers and politicians lined up behind the carbon trade scheme I’d be an idiot not to expect the “science” that dare not state it’s case, to be a fraud.

ALL arguments I’ve seen have been appeals to authority. “I’m a scientist who was a skeptic but now I’m certain”. I’ve yet to see a causal link.

And in the mean-time, part of the solution on a local level, permaculture farming, is being actively destroyed via the contamination of seeds worldwide by genetically tampered crops.

Carbon trade will be a defacto global fiat currency. It will give it’s racketeers the power to make or break any business, any regional economy, to create and manipulate volatility, and profit from it all as insiders.

  34. Adolf Hitler and Benitto Mussolini were ardent salad eaters. Look at the results. Meat in moderation is excellent.. Your brain and your body needs it . Nothing better that nice bloody piece of thick red steak ! Love a nice bavette de cheval. Huuumm !

  35. ohi shouldnt say that really, there is obviously no issue whaTsoever with eating vegetarian sometimes only those obsessive types who run about proclaiming meat is bad/unnecessary or like lord stern that we should stop consuming meat to help cool the planet. haha

  36. @ youri – welcome to quack ville

  37. Loved the show. I love when Max goes on his Tourette’s rants and he says something brilliant and out of left field. Feel the pain…yes…I’ve long been a proponent of addressing the issues and dealing. The U.S. has too long been a country that doesn’t deal. We just make excuses or obfuscate. Feel the pain. Eat the pastie.

  38. Enjoy it while you can. The Greenies remind me a lot of the WASP victorians and the prohibitionnists. Have some fun and fart close to a candle. It’s real fun when the methane explodes.

  39. @ Marc – You’re gonna make me pee my pants!

  40. Too much oxygen inhaling Mep. Oxygen will soon be declared also a poison and consequently by taxed and sold by Blood & Gore. Enjoy it will you can. Hurry ! Hurry ! Hurry ! Get your oxygen credits !

And you do you think that 15 ppm makes a difference. Crackpot science. Have you followed the news recently about the CRU and East Anglia. It”s either warming or not ? And it ain’t dear chap. 15 years of PHONEY BALONEY data is not enough for you ? Recent cooling observed by the NASA neither ? I have nothing to add. You want to believe. Go pay your taxes and your credit carbon papal indulgence to your USA god Al-Capone-Gore. Nice racket like religion. Don’t forget to bow down and kiss his boots too. Indeed science, real science in the end always win against religious fanatics.

  44. @ Tofu – Thanks and thanks . . . I’m dl’ing the torrent.

@ Marc – Do you think that global warming means that it doesn’t snow?!

  45. Here is yous “famous” problem eloquently explained.
15 ppm ain’t a problem. Pimps from the banks selling pollution papal indulgences are. Don’t intend to pay the fat cats and parasites on Wall Street and the rat City for a problem that in the first place exists only in the sick and screwed heads expecing the end of the fed. END THE FED and END Al-Capone-Gore racket too.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYLmLW4k4aI&feature=player_embedded#

  46. 15 ppm of CO2, human activity, is a small fart compared to volcanic activity. Stop being a sheep. 15 ppm ain’t a significant and the bunk science was set up to screw to pay taxes and give big fat trading commissions to your beloved Democrat pimpAl-Capone Gore.

  47. @Mep — happy birthday!

  48. Should be able to get a job for the weather station though.

  49. @ Marc Authier

Hey you won, the skeptics won.

There is no agreement all funds will be diverted to war and wall street from now until eternity. That is what you wanted obviously.

Pump tons and tons of CO2 into the air every year and presto no effect, right. Pass me some of the stuff that you are smoking. All the effects you mention support AGW. Sorry and the cooling (I doubt there is any) is either local, in your imagination or falls under the term noise.

  50. The real world. It’s darn cold out there !
Global Warming ain’t real. It’s a nice fat lie like the internet bubble and the real estate bubble. I have a prediction for you. Winter 2010 will be the year of the carbon credit bust.

this just in. Eliot Spitzer is stepping up to the plate in a rather big way. Of course he’s got a personal vendetta now against some of these banksters since they railroaded him down the river and are very likely the ones who motivated the NSA hatchet job on him.

I for one feel the emails will be ‘lost’ or destroyed or simply made inaccessible. But at least its a breath of fresh air that Spitzer, a member of the elite, is squabbling with these criminals. And if it gets enough press it could become a clarion call for accountability.

don’t get me wrong, that is hoping for too much and that is something I stopped doing years and years ago.

  52. TALKING ABOUT REALITY. Here is what is really happening ont the Global Warming racket front. Pimp Obama, pimp Al-Capone-Gore, pimp JP Morgan, pimp Goldman Sachs, pimp blood sucking gorvernements want to set up a nes bubble based on a phoney baloney theory. Welcome to the Titanis. This Mister Piers Corbyn is real scientific, is a real national treasure. And look what is happening to the wheather in the REAL WORLD. Cold as hell !

    The Climate Change
    Ship of Lies is hitting
    the Iceberg of Truth
The brilliant action by CFACT on Greenpeace ships says it all
    (pic right): http://climaterealists.com/?id=4680
Gordon Brown gave a masterful view on TV of
the nuts & bolts of international negotiations but
he is negotiating lies. The icy blast from Russia
through Copenhagen and hitting London on
the day President Obama arrives at the summit – fitting perfectly with the headline in the Daily Express
where the RUSSIANS spell out how their data has been mis-represented by the UK Met Office/CRU –
    should tell world leaders something!
    ● Gordon Brown’s claim that island states are threatened by Sea Level rise is based on lies – http://www.copenhagenclimatechallenge.org/
    ● Gordon Brown’s hope for more UK jobs in a low Carbon economy is a cover for Carbon taxes, boosting carbon trading
    – worth $Hundreds of Billions and imprisoning the developing world in rules & debt. In truth these mad deceitful policies are
costing UK jobs such as the closure of Redcar steelworks which gains $1bn in windfall carbon credits for Tata steel who also
fund the Tata Energy Research Institute run by Dr Pachauri – chair of UNIPCC which promotes Carbon credit schemes.

Human CO2 is a whimp et a small fart compared to solar activity. “Mets ça dans ta pipe et fumes-le” like we say in Québec. Global Warming science ia as serious as Harry Potter’s magic powers. No wonder the hockey stick scandal comes from East Anglia. Proponents of global warming science are about to receive a hockey puck in the face from the heavens.

  54. @ Adam C. – Thanksman! I’ve got a virtual unbirthday gift ( I sometimes give unbirthday gifts to my friends on my birthday) for Max, Stacy, and y’all . . . inspired by Max & Stacy’s show. Here ya go. Happy unbirthday!

Along with the alcohol, I picked up some essential oils from the natural foods section of the grocery store and am about to get all Martha Stewart in the kitchen making some homemade bath salts to give the chicks in my life for Xmas. Anyone looking to give some practical gifts . . . I’d recommend it. There’s info, videos, and everything else online about how to make ‘em. Gonna make some homemade soy candles and chocolate covered pretzels, too. Never in my life did I think I’d end up being that person, but I just hate the idea this year of giving malls my $. All adults are getting practical gifts and/or money.

  55. @ Marc Authier

Why don’t you pull your head out of Steven Harpers ass long enough to breath, your brain needs some oxygen.

Haven’t you heard there was no agreement. The US effectively got its way. You can live at the top of the food chain a little longer.

Max is entitled to his opinion.

  56. Biggest blizzard in many years in Washington D.C. with blowing artic winds and 1 meter of snow. All the North-East is parasyled. Love your global warming Max. Global Warming is a FRAUD. We know better in Canada. Just wait and see what will happen in Paris in december and january. -16 celsius in Alsace. You are soo funny in Europe. You are about to get a mini Ice Age and you are still thinking abour global warming. Have you all paid your carbon credit to the Al-Capone Gore pimp in Paris and London ? Monstruous blizzards for december and january. Enjoy. Nice racket indeed this weather Nostradamus racket.

  57. Anti-Illuminati

    @Keiser:

How much did Algor pay you to support his man made global warming? Are you both investing in the same companies?

I still love your shows though.

  58. @Mep

    Happy birthday!

  59. Great show.

Max’s point about pain is really rather profound and strikes precisely at the real problems of society: self-abuse due to a lack of self knowledge.

If you REALLY want to alleviate the pain, individually and societally, then give yourselves the gift of practical philosophy:

  68. Bernanke doesn’t understand the basic economics of central banking

“Bank lending is not “reserve constrained”. Banks lend to any credit worthy customer they can find and then worry about their reserve positions afterwards. Even the BIS recognizes this. In reality, if the banks are short of reserves then they borrow from each other in the interbank market or, ultimately, they will borrow from the central bank through the so-called discount window.”

Desperately seeking the full Season 1 of “7 Periods with Mr Gormsby”

    http://diwana.org/details.php?id=1452

Seven Periods with Mr. Gormsby is an unrepentant, politically incorrect, roller-coaster romp about an extraordinarily eccentric secondary-school teacher, who the Education Review Office in their last assessment described as follows:

“Mr. Gormsby is an out-dated, reactionary, racist, sexist teacher completely out of touch with educational theory in the second millennium. He defies the curriculum in every subject and is a disgrace to the profession. He should have no place in any state or private school. We will close Tepapawai Boys High and appoint a commissioner if Mr. Gormsby is not replaced forthwith.”

Tepapawai Boys High School prospectus for 2005 begins:

Kia ora, Kia orana, Talofa lava, Malo e lelei, Bula. Welcome to Tepapawai Boys’ High School. We are a thriving and vibrant secondary school set in the heart of beautiful Tepapawai. Our highly qualified and dedicated teachers are committed to delivering the best possible education to boys in the Tepapawai Community.

It’s a blatant lie, but you can hardly blame the authors when the truth is that Tepapawai is a tatty school, set in a dreary suburb where cheap housing sits alongside squalid light industry. If you had a choice you wouldn’t really want to educate your kids here.

Tepapawai is a Decile 2 school. It has one of the highest staff turnovers in the country and since their last damning ERO Report the hapless Principal, Roger Dasent, can’t find enough relieving teachers, certainly no teacher in the school wants to be put in charge of the out of control, law unto themselves boys in 5F.

This website breaks down the pimpocracy to the bong-laden, LSD hit-fest that the GOP and DEMs are.

There a difference between metaphor and symbology. We think through metaphor, but symbology is ‘owned’ and ‘marketed’ by agency. Whose agency? And, of course, symbols are not static but changelings.

    http://theautomaticearth.blogspot.com/2009/12/december-19-2009-death-taxes-and-mr.html

Not exactly a nice Christmas message !

  112. “Mysterium tremendum. A frightful mystery, a secret to make you tremble.

Tremble. What does one do when one trembles? What is it that makes you tremble?

A secret always makes you tremble. Not simply quiver or shiver, which also happens sometimes, but tremble. A quiver can of course manifest fear, anguish, apprehension of death; as when one quivers in advance, in anticipation of what is to come. But it can be slight, on the surface of the skin, like a quiver that announces the arrival of pleasure or an orgasm. it is a moment in passing, the suspended time of seduction. A quiver is not always very serious, it is sometimes discreet, barely discernible, somewhat epiphenomenal. it prepares for, rather than follows the event. One could say that water quivers before it boils; that is the idea I was referring to as seduction: a superficial pre-boil, a preliminary and visible agitation.”

Pg. 53 (The Gift of Death, Jacques Derrida)
