Stacy Summary: Good morning! Day three of the great snow panic in the UK. They make me laugh so much. There is like a fraction of an inch of snow and everything has come to a standstill and the story dominates all news. Finished recording The Keiser’s Business Guide yesterday (see pic below)! Also, yesterday we saw some amazing, provocative full page ads that Russia Today is running in the UK. They are really quite powerful (I will try to find linkable version) and they certainly grab your attention, but here is the Guardian’s response, which is rather sickening when you consider the broadcast news here as they push blatant war propaganda against Iran. Oh, finally, I don’t think we can have a meet up today in London as we have to go record an interview for the Renegade Economist shortly and I don’t think we will have time before needing to go to Resonance . . . but I will keep you posted here . . .

I live in south London and we have lots of snow here. I agree the English get hysterical when it snows, but it generally doesn’t snow much – but it’s always a shock when it happens and we are never prepared for it. Half the problem I feel is the councils hardly grit the roads/ pavements and when it gets icy (like this morning) it really is dangerous driving – and no one uses chains or studded tyres – I don’t think you can even buy those things here! I’m as guilty of the same type of negligence – my kids haven’t even got winter boots.

Western corporate propaganda, russian propaganda, iranian propaganda, chinese propaganda – it’s the same crap. While I suspect that Max might be forced to use mainly “alternative” channels, I wouldn’t blindly support any of these regimes. As a former communist country citizen still remembering late stages of communist regime (empty grocery stores – walking around to find and buy anything edible wasn’t funny at all), I see that russian regime didn’t change much and western countries (especially US) are now fast approaching this miserable level of both living conditions and personal freedom.
The only value of watching those “alternative regime” media is that they represent opposite view, so they’re not afraid of telling you what corporate media are afraid of. There is no ‘good’ mainstream source. All are biased and propably the best solution is to look at all of them and then do some excercise of critical thinking and draw your own conclusions. Blogs and internet in general is propably more valuable source of information, that’s why all of them are trying to block it as much as they can.
Keeping things simple and saying ‘this one is bad but tis and that is good’ might be a good way to maintain a bunch of fanbois but it’s not how real things work. So, as much as don’t like western corporate propaganda, I also wouldn’t fall in love with Russian Today. That’s why I’m not paying too much attention to that Guardian crap – you know, seeing wolves and hyenas fighting teeth and nail is fun to some extend and then it becomes boring.

Just checked out the ads in Russia Today…I guess I’m sort of numb, broken down and cynical after years of prostesting going back since 1999, the DNC, the Bush admin and the freaking wars…aren’t those ads sort of late…why weren’t these provocative ads out during cowboy Bush years when US invasions started? Only now during the Obama admin. the Russian media have the courage to do these political ads? Either people are slow to catch on or perhaps it takes years to build courage…whatever the case of course I agree with most of these ads…I guess better late than never.

I often wonder why we never see big billboards asking things like this which question our deep beliefs, I’ve often wondered if it’s illegal to say or ask this type of thing in such a public way? Maybe it’s simply a matter of cost – the people who would want to say or question things like this don’t have the money to use this medium. When those bus adverts appeared last year ‘There is no God. Get over it and enjoy your life’ or something like that – caused an outrage, and there were many efforts to prevent them going up.

I have no shame in admitting I lazily accepted the Peak Oil scare. Like any other kind of falsehood, it usually survives by our lack of time to investigate rather than us being somehow ‘mentally deficient’.
Thankfully we all have the internet to protect each other from going astray. Despite what might first appear as hostility, we are in fact encouraging each other to always be skeptical and look for explanations by rational thinking based on facts rather than emotion and populism.

IT is getting harder for governments to buy United States Treasuries because the US’s shrinking current-account gap is reducing supply of dollars overseas, a Chinese central bank official said yesterday.
The comments by Zhu Min, deputy governor of the People’s Bank of China, referred to the overall situation globally, not specifically to China, the biggest foreign holder of US government bonds.
Chinese officials generally are very careful about commenting on the dollar and Treasuries, given that so much of its US$2.3 trillion reserves are tied to their value, and markets always watch any such comments closely for signs of any shift in how it manages its assets.
China’s State Administration of Foreign Exchange reaffirmed this month that the dollar stands secure as the anchor of the currency reserves it manages, even as the country seeks to diversify its investments.
In a discussion on the global role of the dollar, Zhu told an academic audience that it was inevitable that the dollar would continue to fall in value because Washington continued to issue more Treasuries to finance its deficit spending.

In Japan, banks were ONLY forced to activate write-offs after 22 years .. in Germany , it is after 3 years !
The Japanese Boom Years meant that economic success looked great, until the banks were forced to activate their book-losses ( German Book-keeping term : Activa / Passiva )
That is what caused the Jap. banking system to collapse .. loads of bad loans that were “effectively hidden” by their own Banking System rules for over 22 years !

@ Phil – McConnell’s a tool. He and the rest of the GOP have said all along that the majority of Americans were against reform. It was never true. The majority have always polled as being in favor of a government-run public option alternative. Now that people are polling as being against the Senate bill, the GOP is just spinning the numbers. At this point, quantitative data is meaningless–unless the survey questions being asked are good enough to capture both people’s overall stance on reform and on the legislation.
I do agree, though, that the vote shouldn’t be forced before Christmas. There’s still too much to be ironed out, and the public should have the chance to be informed of what’s actually in the final bill.
Speaking of being distracted by Xmas, I have to go start shopping. ;-( Don’t even feel like getting anything for the kids in the family this year, b/c the rest of my family has already gone nuts–buying each kid at least 3 Christmases worth of gifts. Sigh.

In 1965 only 5 million cards were in circulation and by 1996 some 1.4 billion cards were out floating in the market. How can this be? You have some people that have ten or more cards. As of today over 70 percent of eligible households have a credit card. This isn’t stunning since the average American needs to establish credit through this racket because of building up a FICO score. In many cases this score determines your interest rate or even whether you get a rental. How did people do it in the 1950s or before? They actually spent time vetting the person instead of deferring the hard work to some magical three digit number.
I’ve been trying to wrap my mind around the massive growth in credit card debt. This week Bank of America sent me a letter discussing the new changes to my credit card because of the new legislation kicking in 2010. A few key points include not being able to hike up your rates on all cards if you miss payment on one card. This is known as universal default. And another key was not being able to hike up your rate without advance notice. The letter was sent as if it were fantastic news. This is nonsense. This is like someone sending you a letter saying, “after 20 years of robbing your bank account, we have decided that we will no longer steal your money with both hands but only with one.” Is this really the kind of reform the corporate oligarchs have in mind for us?
And while this reform is coming, credit card companies are screwing as many customers as they can before the new legislation comes into effect. I made the inopportune mistake of acting in frustration and anger. One day as I arrived home after a tough day, I opened up a letter from Chase showing that my fixed rate of 4.9% was now going up to 18.99%. The letter in point 6-print stated that if I did not want this, I should pick up the phone and call some person half way around the globe to discuss a very local problem. I dialed away and told them that I wanted to completely opt out. Who in the world would say yes to this? Well as it turns out the rate shot up anyway and the card was closed because somewhere in the clause, not opting in was reason to move on the change. Furious I had my attorney draft up a letter and we sent it to Chase. They managed to get the rate back down. No late payments. Years of on time loyalty mean nothing here. Even a solid FICO score. My attorney just shook his head and said he is seeing this over and over.
It is enough to make your head turn. How is this beneficial to anyone? How is this even legal after we just went through an economic collapse that came close to rivaling that of the Great Depression? Credit card companies and their banking parents have absolutely no shame. Time to bust these trusts up.

Very likely unfortunately cause they are out to attack Iran and more wars. Obama didn’t send all these new troops to Afghanistan for Afghanistan but it’s a war preparation for Iran. The war budget never has been this high. I think it’s a little bit early to attack cause normally you would have all this front running in the media but maybe they changed there schedule and they don’t care anymore about what the people think and skip the media circus? Remember Brzezinski’s comments about Israel vs Iran a few months back (“A Liberty In Reverse”)? To attack via US airspace (i.e. Iraqi airspace), Israel would suffer — at least — the illusion of US interference (until Iran retaliates)…
If you want to believe the US is secretly in on this insane plan, consider there’s been no major news, no noticable rumours about US deployments or call-ups… esp naval — which is hard to keep that hushed if it’s large-scale. (Also consider Iran probably has sunburn/onyx-type missiles and could easily take out a carrier group.) So, no ground assault, even though it’s the right time of year… and no naval group will stay within range. Stalemate.
Israeli SF on the ground long-term? If denied US signals-intercept & geo-imaging support (not to mention resupply access) they’re dead-men. If any of this happens it’ll be a long-distance shooting-match, for which the Iranians have been preparing since Israel & the neocon faction telegraphed their intentions many years ago. We had so much snow here one time about 25 years ago that we were making tunnels through it for fun. It was drifted up past single story eaves troughs in some places. My sister was too far along in a tunnel and used up the oxygen in it, barely made it out. But yeah, even here, first snowstorm and everyone has to relearn how to drive in winter conditions. We end up with a surge in traffic accidents.
People here are silly, most of em don’t even own proper winter clothes. Too busy trying to look cool. I think cringing and shivering with a runny nose looks pretty dumb, personally. I thought it was well known that Israel has atomic weapons of mass destruction but for juridical reasons the U.S. will always deny that. Pakistan and India have them too. Israel will be the fuse in the gunpowder-barrel, the fire starter when the time is there for them to be used.

But an even bigger grenade dropped earlier this year when the Alaska board, citing depositions of Mercer employees, contended that company executives had known about the actuaries’ errors and covered them up.
If Alaska prevails in court, it could entitle the retirement system to punitive as well as treble damages.
Unlike most public pensions that promise to pay future benefits out of money they hope to earn, the Alaska systems funded health care costs in advance.
As actuary for retirement plans that serve both teachers and other public employees, Mercer had the duty to calculate the plans’ liabilities and determine the employer contribution rates to fund those promises.
But, according to the lawsuit, when Mercer prepared the plans’ 2002 report, it understated their liabilities by as much as $1 billion.
Then, rather than own up to the mistake, Mercer executives covered it up, the documents say. “Following standard Mercer policies designed to prevent clients from discovering Mercer’s errors,” Alaska’s lawyers contend, “Mercer’s actuaries carefully avoided creating a written record of their discussions and calculations, in order, one of them testified, to avoid creating a ‘trace.’ ”
Because of the errors and cover-up, the lawsuit said, Mercer underreported by more than $2.8 billion the contributions required to fund the plans.

They are in the trove of e-mail messages still backed up on A.I.G. servers, as well as in the key internal accounting documents and financial models generated by A.I.G. during the past decade. Before releasing its regulatory clutches, the government should insist that the company immediately make these materials public. By putting the evidence online, the government could establish a new form of “open source” investigation.
Perhaps A.I.G.’s employees would also be judged not guilty. But we
would like to see the record to find out. As fraud investigators, we
would like to examine the trading patterns of A.I.G.’s financial
products division, and its communications with Goldman Sachs and other bank counterparties who benefited from the bailout. We would like to understand whether the leaders of A.I.G. understood that they were approaching a financial Armageddon, and whether they alerted their counterparties, regulators and shareholders to the impending calamity.
