  1. @Y’all
    one the one!!!

  2. Photoception

Liechtenstein is a country nobody has even heard of and it’s still better than the UK. Wow.

  3. check out the dollar index and PM price spikes.

  4. More people seem to be getting concerned about the eventual consequences of the financial crisis:

“Everyone I know has major concerns about money. And nearly everyone agrees that it is a scarce commodity. Virtually everyone wants to have more. Even so, most Americans have no interest in learning about the function of money, where it originates, why it fluctuates in value or who has control over our money supply…Throughout history entire civilizations have risen and collapsed based on the quality of their money…many others like myself are more pessimistic and see an eventual collapse of our economy as a real possibility.”

  5. Nice article from BBC’s Peston.

“Given the economic price we’ve all paid for the reckless behaviour of banks, it’s perhaps surprising that we’re not all as angry as the Icelanders.”

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/robertpeston/2010/01/were_all_icelanders_now.html

  6. UK is full of fat lazy tossers. On that basis alone it should be near the bottom on the list.

  7. Yeah photoception, it’s a tiny tax haven. Silly for it to be listed, imo. They might as well have listed small cities too then.

  8. Did somebody give my Gold a viagra?

  9. Jobless claims worse than expected:
    http://www.cnbc.com/id/34764587

  10. I don’t see how the US could be a better place to live than Canada. In terms of safety for example, there are very very few tiny specific places in Canada where it is unsafe to be during the daytime. I’m talkin, an alley here, a sidewalk there. And it’s pretty easy to recognize and avoid most of them. In the US there are parts of New York City where Guiliani was concerned about the safety of the military if they were called in. I think this is like choosing a prom king and queen or something.

  11. That may explain gold/$ (see chart)

  12. namarama – that or the US dollar just got a kick in the jibblies.

  13. @daniel
sorry i was refering to jobs data impacting dollar/gold

  14. @s.herbert

@ Mike Liverpool For Yooooou !

  15. 85,000 jobs? “Oy me jibblies!” said the dollar.

  16. Yep, I understood you Marietta.

  17. What’s happened to Gold ?????
Ronron & Mike must be jumplng with Joy

    @ronron & @ Phil/G
Good thing is Scientest of Our Era are twerps
First they said an Atom is the smallest particle
    then Electron
    Then now we at Quarks
Then they say Light travels in Packets to suite this theory
Then they say it also travels like a sinosoidal wave

In All probability those nitwits might be wrong
LOL Dark matter anti matter all I think recently discovered
    Hic ;-)

  18. Is Gold’s spike an Indication of a scandal gonna come out ???

  19. Marc Authier

    @Bonn

The scandal is that the economix policies are not working. Hey all Obamamites ? Where are the jobs ? They are at Goldman Sachs and in the Pentagone, and that’s about it. Nothing is working.

  20. @bonn
The spike in gold seems to correspond to the “unexpected” poor jobs number. Jobs report was announced at same time gold spiked. I posted the link above.

  21. @Bonn – it spiked when NY opened; at the same time the dollar fell; it could be the payrolls number . . . or it could be something else; my guess is that it is the payrolls data showing jobs were lost after alleged gains in November

  22. China – gold’s No1 producer and consumer is taking control of the market
“Although Chinese reporting of State holdings can be obscure to say the least as it differs depending on which government entity technically holds the gold. China has in the past not reported official gold reserve growth until the gold is physically moved into Central Bank coffers – if then!

This all makes the estimates of non Central Bank gold supply and demand virtually impossible to assess accurately…given the unknown of where the world’s largest producer’s gold is actually going – depending on what statistics the Chinese are prepared to release to the outside world. Digging too deeply locally could end one in jail, as Rio Tinto’s iron ore pricing negotiators have found out to their cost!

What is apparent…is that the Chinese government and Central Bank is wary of the declining value of the dollar…and is feverishly pushing state entities into diversifying its reserve base – hence the suggestion that all China’s newly mined gold may well be sitting in government coffers – and also why China doesn’t appear to have stepped in to buy IMF gold. It can happily expand its gold reserves surreptitiously which doesn’t rock the markets too much.”

  23. For a anumber of years Ireland was rated high on these lists,

maybe its calculated using the moodys/standards and poor method.

  24. Quality of Life

    Eh……Ireland??

  25. Horses for courses,…..yep,..horses for courses! : )
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5hATvshoB8

  26. @namarama – the quality of life in Ireland looks pretty dismal to me; costs are verrrrry high and there seems to be quite a lot of violence (from what I read in the local papers anyway); the violence, however, seems more of a UK variety . . . drunken brawls, rather than the LA style gang warfare sort or the going postal variety that you see in the US

  27. Bonn, it’s due to the Jobs data that just came out, Marietta posted a link.

Jobs expectations lead to interest rate and money flow expectations. The consensus idiot (cough) specialist view was neutral news. The rest of us thought bad news or a lie would come out (I was guessing and hoping the latter).

“Professional and business services added 50,000 positions, while education and health services increased payrolls by 35,000. Temporary help employment rose by 47,000.

Manufacturing payrolls fell 27,000 after dropping 35,000 in November. The construction sector lost 53,000 jobs, while the service-providing sector shed only 4,000 workers.”

On the bright side construction isn’t building more spare capacity and many of the Temp workers will never qualify for Employment Insurance benefits, so some of them are dropped from the typically quoted Unemployment stat and many of them won’t return to it soon. Uh, that was sarcasm.

  28. Marc Authier

    @Bonn

It’s MINUS 85,000 in paradise USA. Quality of life has a lot to do with the job market. And Europe and the USA slowly but surely is becoming a lot like Eastern Europe.

    @Photoconception
If you know a little bit about capital markets, banking you know that place is about. It’s micro country, an excuse of a country used by the ultra rich and the mafia, the same thing, to hide their moey. Bono from U2 has probably a bank account there.

“Liechtenstein is a country nobody has even heard of and it’s still better than the UK. Wow.”

Bono has heard about it. The country is the size of a big village. It’s a little bit a joke to consider it as a country.

  29. @ Daniel S
    went through it Daniel
I need one more bubble to time my real Estate
That Dummass Obama shoulda just given the money to the Public. Idiot that he is.The rest of the world woulda moaned and groaned but anything better than giving it to a selective few who are apperently doing “Gods Work”
    Hic ;-)
I forgot for a moment what time the NYSE opens

  30. They did that in India a couple of years back
Indian farmers were given a clean slate
They shoulda just done that in the US

    http://tinyurl.com/Indian-Farmers-given-clean-sla

  31. Bonn – speaking of timing I need to be awake during the day so I can buy bullion before it’s 1250 CDN again :(

Maybe Obama will soothe the gold price down with his economic message today.

  32. The whole thing is a bunch of hot air, quote”In all, 194 countries are surveyed on nine criteria, including the cost of living, culture and leisure, environment, safety, culture and weather.” end quote

How many times do you need to call culture and weather = environment? self sufficiency/production/employment/stability of economy/eroding purchasing power due to greedy bankers/corrupt governments etc? Anyways it’s also based on averages, in all countries are homeless people/even whole new cities in the US or the other way around if you’re a billionaire it doesn’t matter how much something costs because you can never spend all your money (without charity but to reach such amount not having morals and being greedy is a must). Even in the uk you could live on a farm/not in a crowded city, it’s all generalised/relative; even a bigger waste of time than listening to employment numbers/economic predictions of the government. Anyways surprising cayman islands isn’t on there or other tax safe havens.

  33. Somebody might as well have a big cruise ship kept at sea in perpetuity and call that a nation if we’re going to call Liechtenstein, Jersey, etc nations.

  34. @Marc Authier – Bono may, indeed, have a bank account in Lichtenstein, but it is via the Netherlands that he avoids all taxes on his royalty income that would normally have gone to Ireland . . . and, by the way, where is his ‘free’ concert and concern for the people of Ireland? @Danny – has he spoken out on the fraud committed by his fellow bankers against the people of Ireland?

  35. @ stacyherbert

Gangland warfare is actually rife in Ireland. A lot of it being the remenants of paramillitary terrorists musceling in on drug patches. We do have a problem with drunken loutish behaviour but I don’t think its as bad in that respect as the UK.

  36. Am I was thinking of the difference between quality of life for people within nations too and what group they were considering. Cuz for myself as a messed up poor person I bet I’d be dead in the US long ago. I wonder what the list would look like for handicapped people, prostitutes, college educated, etc. They should make lots of em.

  37. And the best part is it can still be done
    Obama needs the political will
Put all Goldman Sacks Employess and generally the banking sector under house arrest till we sort the shit out. hes got a 3,000,000 army for what ??

Before that he needs to get into his Nuke Bunker sit underneath the desk And Dish out orders.

He’ll truly become a World hero lol

  39. Marc Authier

The more powerful the central bank in the country, the less the quality of life. The more concentrated the wealth and political power, the less the quality of life, No middle class no quality of life.

  40. Scanners: This quote is from a comment in a Telegraph article so no idea of source or accuracy, but it doesn’t sound good.

“The Backscatter doesn’t actually emit X-rays, but little tested T-rays, or THz waves (terahertz waves), which is radiation that is positioned between microwaves and infrared rays on the electromagnetic spectrum. And as would be expected, the Cartel’s scientists and corporate media have ensured that whether or not T-rays severely damage biological systems is to be a controversial subject: this is the usual Cartel stratagem whenever their agenda is on shaky grounds.

Boian Aleandrov, of the Center for Nonlinear Studies at Los alamos National Laboratory, however, has a very decided opinion regarding the dangers of T-rays: He tells us that T-rays tear apart human DNA.

Alexandrov, and his team at Los alamos, say that although the forces that T-rays exert are small, their resonant effects can “unzip” DNA strands, tearing them apart, thus creating bubbles in the strands that significantly interfere with gene expression and DNA replication. And whatever that means, it doesn’t sound good.”

  41. I wonder what kind of criteria they used for this list. It says la dolce vita – the sweet life – so this seems to mean that Italy is a better place to live than Norway, despite all the social safety nets in Norway. It is also surprising to see that the Chech Republic is better than say Sweden. But, as a Norwegian , I agree that the good life is not all about social services and safety nets and all kind of claims and hand outs, on the contrary, these things can make a place dull and put false expectations and beliefs in peoples heads.

  42. Sweden @ 30???
    Give me a break!

And, what? Sweden has the highest cost of living in the world?
    A 0? Don’t be ridiculous!

I guess they messed up the values, because if Sweden would get the same score as e.g. Japan (lowest number of all countries) we would get a weighted final score of ca. 75 and jump 10 places in the ranking.

    Clowns.

  43. @Pete – they say the criteria also includes variety of landscapes and things to do in the country and the quality of services in towns across the country; and also the quality of the food . . . obviously Italy scores high on food (should be the highest in Europe, imo) and also in the variety of the landscape

  44. @Y’all
from the after comments … my fave!!!

“What a childish, pointless debate ! (so is that top list by the way, as different cultures provides different priorities for every country !
I just took a look at this article in order to find in the comments what I expected to : ridiculous and laughable national pride, either french, british or american”

  45. @ DEDO

yo i replied (sensibly! :) in the other thread..

  46. sg do not ever group the french along with the british and americans ty

  47. we r most surely of a superior caliber

  48. France no:1 yeah why not, the only problem I see with France is that its full of French.
Ireland cost of living is high but so then are the wages, scenery lovely if somewhat wet, for my money though the SW of Germany has it, great food (influenced by neighbours, Italy, France, Austria, and Switzerland), great scenery, although it too suffers like France in that its full of Germans.

  49. don’t know why Belgium is so high on the list…well the beer is good but that can’t be it. This country is a mess.

  50. @henk – plus, it’s boring as hell without much scenery

  51. @Y’all
I suppose the most important thing… when you go to live in another country is being able to understand and speak the language… also understanding the culture well enough so you can make a real contribution to that society… otherwise you will always be just…
Jimmy Cliff – Sitting In Limbo.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRoJyaZW6SA

  52. What is the point of Belgium?

  53. Marc Authier

    @Alister.

Superior in your stupidity buying stocks and real estate anyways. And selling all Bank of England gold at fire sale prices. I hope you are joking ?

Superiority complex is the worst thing in life. You can be sure you are dealing with a bubble in a country or an economy when people become convinced they are something special. I call it “the choosen people” syndrome, the “Mosses complex”. There is no such thing as “superior” people.

Each is special. And each of us can be “superior”. We are ALL powerful. It’s just that we don’t use our power. Inferiority is a state of mind. I personnally just aspire at being myself “neither superior nor inferior”. These comparitive studies are a joke. They mean nothing.

  54. Phil /Germany

    @henk …. Belgium

I guess they’re pretty happy as main recipient of EU money !
    ;-)

I was in Antwerp and Calais some 25 years ago … parts looked as of nothing had been done since WW2 !
Of course, at tat time ca. 1980, the Belgian state was BK.
Income taxes were as high as 80% .. the black market in Gold was flourishing !
I suppose the EU money rescued them , just in time !
    ;-)

  55. =========
I don’t see how the US could be a better place to live than Canada. In terms of safety for example, there are very very few tiny specific places in Canada where it is unsafe to be during the daytime.
    =========

Of the 192 UN Nations, assuming all are counted in this list — the US would have to be around 150. It does not belong on this part of the list.

When hyperinflation and peak oil collapse the fragile agricultural system in the US it will be worse off than Rwanda — but will look prettier.

My Canadian friend living in the US avoids all contact with Americans as the population no matter how rich or educated (or poor and backward) is phycotic and cannot be trusted.

  56. Sorry , this is off topic but CNBC must be getting nervous about internet rumors because they actually talked about the rumor of the US govt proping up the stock market. They talked to an “expert” who of course totally dismissed it.
    http://www.cnbc.com/id/15840232?video=1380087585&play=1

Of cours he doesn’t adress any EVIDENCE that the govt is proping things up.

  57. @Stacy

@Danny – has he spoken out on the fraud committed by his fellow bankers against the people of Ireland?

Not to my knowledge. Bono walks between the raindrops in this country. I remember when he was caught with the evading tax story he made some token donation to an Irish charity (@david might correct me there). All very condescending.

The government lets the bankers get away with it in this country, never mind Bono ‘avin a go at them.

One does get very frustrated sometimes with Ireland’s “sur it’ll be grand” mentality.

  58. @Marc,These comparitive studies are a joke. You wouldn’t be saying that if you were Belgium teeheehee.

  59. Life is cheap in the land of the American Imperialists item number 317,837:

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1241555/In-mourning-Casey-Johnsons-fianc-e-Tila-Tequila-accused-cashing-lovers-death.html

Don’t be shocked by the high number, this is only in the 12.044%ile range of the overall body of evidence.

  60. What. No Brazil, Russia, India, China (BRIC) in the “top 25″?

  61. Marc Authier

Ireland desserves bankruptcy when I think about Bono and U2. U2 is very funny name. I think it’s the way they call their unemployment insurance in this busted country. Hey Bono you should pay your taxes in Irelant “you to”. I can’t stanf that U2 bloodsucker. With

  62. We don’t pay attention to the Daily Mail most of the time, why should we care now.

  65. “Liechtenstein is a country nobody has even heard of and it’s still better than the UK. Wow.”

However, compared to Switzerland it is a classical Bizantne autocracy.

Government needs to be a little more organic to fully serve its people, and Andorra and other European microstates have this problem.

I should be lower on the list for this reason.

  66. the U.S. should be #1 in the Quality of Denial rankings.

  67. Typo fix:

Government needs to be a little more organic to fully serve its people, and Andorra and other European microstates have this problem.

Andorra and Litchtenstien (etc…) should be lower on the list for this reason.

  68. @ Phil

well I’m going to Antwerp at least once a month and still think nothong has been done since WW2. Income tax is still very high. We had in Holland also 80 % but that one came down to 53 %. Still not worth for me to work to hard for the Dutch state.

So for Bono it is a tax heaven in Holland. But for the people who work it is still not funny!

  69. Marc Authier

Ireland desserves bankruptcy when I think about Bono and U2. U2 is very funny name. I think it’s the way they call their unemployment insurance in this busted country. Hey Bono you should pay your taxes in Irelant “you to”.

I can’t stand that U2 bloodsucker. Without remorse about Ireland. I hope the place goes to pots, and implodes.

They used in right wing circles in Québec and Canada ad nauseam (and Icelant too) always talk about Ireland as role model to follow ! Luckily electors are not that stupid. At least pour l’instant.

One house out of three is completely empty.

  70. @Y’all
    left this then!!!

  71. just wondering … Obama last year was given a chance for change and chose to bail out the bankers instead.
the start of this year he seems to be given that choice again with Geithner and from what I have read securities fraud … does he make the same choice and side with Capital or does he say enough .. I blew it last time … second chance I am going to take it … and Hope the people are there for cover.
You are either with the people or against us.

  72. Canadian provinces I hate to spell:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saskatchewan

And its too cold to live there.

That said, Quebec province is not worth living in either unless you are Catholic, French and not from Europe — otherwise the racism is worse than the USA. Montreal, once the 2nd city of the Empire has now been replaced by Toronto.

  73. @David – The only problem with Antarctica is that it’s full of snow. This city is empty.

  74. If one correlated this with a similar index of how nations cared for their children in the past, that might be interesting.

  75. I just spotted another sighting of those infamous Elderidge Cleaver pants!

In this video of the extended version of the Andrea True Connection hit “More, More, More” (1976) at 3:21 up pops an album cover which includes the shot. The album is ‘Super Hits of the 70′s – Have A Nice Day, Vol. 17′.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIXHks5z8Tw

  76. Marietta – gotta love the “expert”. My favorite example is of the Fifth Estate CBC white wash of 9/11 when it addressed the conspiracy theory that a plane never hit the pentagon. They did this by referring to an expert’s opinion without even bothering to show or name the expert or even go over evidence. Just a simple blanket statement, like “our expert said the damage was consistent with having been caused by a plane”. Oh , okay. Your expert. Guess that settles it then.

  77. @Stacy, Re: Dolce Vita UK

As you’re aware there’ll always be a portion of the populace that will endorse this system or that system,..like I said, horses for courses !

  78. Marc Authier

    @Max Power
It’s you the racist. Québec is a fantastic place. More interesting that many places in the universe. And the food is fantastic. 10,000 restaurants. Great night life. Great food. Great beer. Even wine produced in the south and extreme norg. We produce 144 different type of cheese. The best cheese in the world comes from Québec city, Portneuf Québec. You little anglo-saxon racist. You know nothing about french culture in Québec. Nothing. Probably a freakin anglo-quebecer or a Westerne canadian WASP. We call them Westmount Rhodesians.

  79. In Holland we say Belgium’s purpose is to allow us to adapt on the way to France ;-)

I thinks Italy’s maffia is a minus. But the US with no social network, no insurance, its cut throat mentality and corrupt government is a laughing stock. A friend would ask me ‘what is N’? Did they only ask people at the gulf club?

    @Snoot

I think we will have decivilisation in most of the world. But that said, it is just an economist wet dream to have a global monetary union. It requires increasing force projection and therefore can not be stabile or selfsustaining.

I just got a message from within one of the polynesian governments literaly saying they expect to be ‘wiped out’ by climate change effects within a decade.

  80. Marc Authier

    @Max Power
You are an ignorant. I wouldn’t live in Saskatchewan. The place is boring as hell ! No Just for laugn festivals. No International Jazz festivals. No culture. NOTHING. You big ignorant racist. You eat too much Big Macs.

  81. Marc Authier

UPS cutting 1800 jobs TODAY. Quality of life is going way down in the USA. Way down.

  82. Yes Stacy, life here in New Zealand is great, especially at Christmas and New Year when the Summer sun shines brightly, in fact we should be number one. It would be better if we had a gold market of course, being the worlds least corrupt country. We do have plenty of gold but we keep it all mixed with quartz underground. Oh and we have the white gold that middle class Chinese folk have an increasing propensity to drink. and France? Gimme a break, they’re a bunch of terrorists!

  83. Very funny piece by joshfulton. Thanks stacy!

I ve noticed that silver has been holding its gains against the dollar better than gold as of late. Is silver ready to close the gap?

  84. Hey Marc fuck any mooses lately.

  85. frances snoot

But that said, it is just an economist wet dream to have a global monetary union.

Exactly what do you mean by a ‘global monetary union’, ME?

  86. @snoot

    Are you talking in circles?

  87. Strike 2? : http://presstv.com/detail.aspx?id=115603&sectionid=3510203 interesting btw how the individuals are sued and not the entire company. Private contract killers the mafia commercialized to protect special interest with violence whoever is paying them. Although the military industrial complex makes trillions each year, and seem to have diplomatic immunity (why would any one be allowed to commit crimes? even for a politician is creating opportunity) the bankster/pirates of goldman sachs have shown the best way to rob a bank is become one with imaginary bets then use your cronies in government to bail you out if the insurance/bets fail.

  88. Marc Authier

    @Mike
France ? A bunch of terrorist ? That’s why I presume Stacy and Max live in Paris ? What’s going on this morning ? Mike go get a brain.

You rednecks are soo funny. If you don’t eat USA’s crow and bullshit, you automatically a “terrorist”. The anglo-saxon is indeed very very sick. Mike you eat too much ammonia tainted meat.

  89. frances snoot

    @ME:
No. Are you hearing in circles?

It should be easy enough for you to define what a ‘global monetary union’ is according to ME perceptual acuity. Go on.

  90. The point that is being missed by all of these “Quality of life indexes” is how the nation state concept is slowly eroding while the world village concept becomes more and more of a reality as each year passes. Regardless of which country you’re in, you’re still being subjected to the same issues and problems as every other country in the world, and more so as time goes on. This “best” country BS is just more PTB spin to keep people in the dark.

  91. @Y’all
Ah-Ha Ha… do ever get the feeling you have been cheated!!!

    http://www.gouv.qc.ca/portail/quebec/international/general/immigration/immigrer_au_quebec/vivre_au_quebec/?lang=en

What a hell ! You have to learn a foreign language. Quel drame !
It’s very difficult to learn another language for some anglos, specially french. Don’t know why. 25% of “english” words comme from the “méchant” french language. Mike and Max Power aller vous faire voir. A lot of Klu Klux Klan members this morning.

  93. @Snoot

I like to let my words do the talkin..

  94. Well, abcnews reports that the Nigerian airplane thong guy is charged with “…the attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction. That weapon, according to the government, was an explosive hidden under his clothing…” http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=9509717

    @Skippy:
Less is more when you’re happy! France can’t sustain that lifestyle without siphoning all of the uranium from Iran…oh. Well, never mind. Stella says a perty sunset is the best here in the winter: it’s salmon-pink and red. That’s free!

  102. the fact the us is 7 immediately discredits the table . but having said that, as a french austalian im quite happy with it otherwise haha

  108. @marc and Y’all.
oops cooking dinner while reading… sorry if I misread your post… thought you was talking bout french words in UK language!!!

  109. mrs/ms frances : u seem to have gone nuts over misinterpretation. i have responded in other post. please make sure u read what i said prior to my last post to you to actually catch my drift…………………………..very very off

  110. @TsarCaustic. all your money goes on the big screen no matter what bank. so is your time worth anything? you think small banks are not controlled by the big boys. your deposits are not held at the bank you use. how else can i put this.

  111. @SG

“Dieu et mon droit” “Honnis soit qui mal y pense.” Nice.
Sometimes I think you are still at war with France. Englis speaking Canadians still hate the small population left in Québec. Some of them want us erased from the face of the earth.

Still in their 100th year war mode. When is not the Arabs, it’s the “méchant” frenchen. David ? You have a sexual problem ? I didn’t know that you suffer from zoophilia. It’s a very common problem with the British and horses too.

  114. @ronron… ok got that, I thought you were talking about something more direct/immediate that might argue for one bank over another, but I agree, if you’re an average depositor in the public banking system, you’re just as screwed no matter where you are.

  119. Here’s some irony: Mort Zuckerman is right now on bloomberg talking about the new unemployment numbers in the US, and also arguing that US H1B restrictions should be relaxed so foreign students who graduate can stay in the US and get jobs.

  120. @ronron
Read the comments please. I am not paranoid. I said the SOME english-canadians, SOME ronron. Please. Read again. I dis not say ALL. Ronron ? “Honnis soit qui mal y pense.”

When someone like Mike says that France is a terrorist state, I react. And no Québec is not hell on eath, because you have to learn a foreign language. What’s the problem ?

You can’t accept Ronron the fact that some of you are racists in English-Canada. Some of you want even to ger rid of french language. Yes. C’est comme ça ronron. They really are. Québec is not a hell hole and french as a english are very interesting interesting languages to learn. Again Ronron I said SOME not ALL of them. What’s it with you ?

your deposits are not held at the bank you use

But one would prefer to be in a bank where the deposits not held are upheld by some guarantee. FDIC is broke. Small banks are holding commercial mbs and need to respond to basel mandates: not a good condition for survival. The small banks do not have IRB for risk management but rely on S&P ratings for their onus. Switching money to small community banks at this stage in our economic catastrophe because of some scene anecdote from It’s a Wonderful Life is rather silly.

  126. @ronron

“Ronron petit rond.” There is nice song in french that’s starts this way. Yeah and guess what ronron, I have also english-canadian friends. And do regularly do businees with people from Vancouver. I can’t stand people vomitting on Québec because it’s catholic and french speaking. I hate this type of protestant ulstermen comment from Max Power. Our paranoia is nothing compared to the one in the USA.

Willem Buiter warns of massive dollar collapse

Americans must prepare themselves for a massive collapse in the dollar as investors around the world dump their US assets, a former Bank of England policymaker has warned.

He said investors would, rightly, suspect that the US would have to generate major inflation to whittle away its debt and this dollar collapse means that the US has less leeway for major spending plans than politicians realise.

  130. I wonder what demographic this poll is pointing to.

For retirement and the elderly, health care costs, insurance, utilities……..are huge factors.

I don’t know what the healthcare is like in France….? Stacy, can you comment on that? Are you having to carry private insurance?

In the research that I have been doing for retirement Uruguay has low housing prices, lower utilities and very good healthcare.

    Anybody with more info?

    @ marc
Regarding Iceland, this was the plan all along, that’s why the banks need govt to collect their booty. If you don’t pay your taxes you’re a terrorist, if you don’t pay your other bills you’re just a bum, which is still legal, for now.

Any where in France will do.. or Spain..
I remember doing my M.Sc and I went into halls. They like to mix people up, so we had a kitchen shared with, Chinese, Korean, French x2, German, Spain. Once we read this article that compared suicide and unemployment and France was the worst, high suicide and high unemployment, but Spain had the highest unemployment and low suicide. So we all asked the Spanish guy why this was?, He said its simple, there is always another party to go to in Spain.. !!

Yep somewhere hot with parties, sounds good…

  151. Unlike most from the US, I have had the opportunity to travel outside of the country. It really does change one’s view of home.

Belgium- I liked it, especially Antwerp- a city built for people, not cars. I am biased, however, because I love history, art and music. Want to go back.

Germany- I wouldn’t mind living there, and I speak the language. I am sure some of the family is still around.

Iran- Um, lived there a year, long ago. I would like to visit again someday, but not live there.

From where I sit, there are places not far from me that remind me of the poorer parts of Tehran when I was there: truly third-world conditions. Sad, but the poor are paying the price of empire.

  154. Whistler’s homeless relocated ahead of Olympics

    http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british-columbia/story/2010/01/08/bc-whistler-homeless-olympics-relocate.html

As Olympic organizers in Whistler, B.C., gear up for the 2010 Winter Games in February, the area’s homeless are being forced to relocate.

Whistler’s homeless usually live in their cars or find shelter in the village’s parkades and parking lots. But with the Games around the corner, Olympic organizers are taking over roads and parking lots, displacing them.

That has social services agencies in Squamish, about 40 kilometres south of Whistler, scrambling to provide emergency shelter and help find housing in the area.

Peter Harker is the only homeless outreach worker in the region.

“I think it’s uncomfortable for some communities to say there’s homeless, when there’s an image you want to keep,” he said.

“[Squamish has] become a catchment for the homeless in Whistler.”

At least two dozen homeless people from Whistler have already relocated to Squamish, where there is an emergency shelter open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“The fact they have a safe place to come to, of course it’s going to help them,” said Melinda Peters, co-ordinator of The Helping Hands Society.

Harker said the Games have actually been good for some of the area’s homeless.

“There are a group of people who’ve found work up in Whistler in the last-minute push to get the Games on the road,” he said.

Most of Whistler’s homeless are expected to return once the Games are over.
