@ Guiseppe – Thanks for pointing that out. Now, the question is will OSI market their services as an annual package, or will they charge by the scan? If they are paid as the contracted provider, there may be a minimum number of scans/month in the contract but the rest be a matter of PR value for the company and TSA. If the work is piecemeal, there would be more of a push on OSI’s part to conduct scans. Either way, one might expect that someone in the TSA line would make the decision re who or how many are scanned. There may be an adjustment by terror threat alert level is in force. The supply/demand equation would probably be formalized somewhere in a contract.
We ought to see that contract. Surely there is a whistleblower somewhere who can lay hands on that thing. If there is a great enough outcry for Congressional oversight, that may increase the number of persons to whom the contracted language would be exposed. The details may reveal some devils.

Here’s a News Release from OSI about their recent signing to scan Puerto Rico’s shipping containers at the Port of San Juan…

So tell me: Who do the TSA intend to hire to operate the scanners? Do they plan to hire some more minimum wage types from under bridges or do they plan to compete with medical facilities and hire radiology techs? If they intend to apply modified medical equipment to the security realm, how much do they want to pay the medical directors? Would OSI like to be on the losing end of the personal injury litigation whip, or will they be exempted from claims? Who eats this? — OSI, the airlines, the flying public, or the taxpayer.
Seems that this time fuel does not need to go up for put buying against the airlines to make sense.
It is possible that anyone who takes a job running the scanner could find such a decision to be a personally expensive one. Chances of inadequate physical protection combined with tort protection for the employer could combine to be physically and fiscally hazardous for the employee.
Remember the film badges? If the wearer is overexposed, he/she cannot work around radiation for a period of time. Not pretty for a contractor. Hmm, out of work, possibly harmed, no recourse. What a great career.

One of my issues with the scanners has to do with my granddaughter. She lives in another country. How much radiation is she supposed to be around if she wants to come up and visit? People such as the anesthesia crew at hospitals and (of course) those working in the radiology department wear film badges to try to keep them from exceeding a given cumulative annual exposure to radiation. There would be class action lawsuits if the hospitals dropped all efforts of limiting staff exposure to radiation. How about the frequent flyer?
I am sufficiently concerned that I do not plan to pay to fly my family members here anytime soon. The decision is who flies vs does anyone fly?

I don’t think that racism per se’ is hardwired into the human animal but rather a fear of those who are different. I assume that this is an evolutionary trait that had practical application for primitive man. The trick for modern man is to recognize the lack of applicability of this imprint and intellectually override it as needed. Joseph Campbell in the Power of Myth series and his other works, stated that religions evolved differently for nomadic vs agrarian people with the nomadic religions being much more aggressive and less compassionate. According to him, this was due to the nomads frequently coming into contact with hostile people and animals, therefore all of the compassion and empathy was reserved for those in the tribe. You can see this impulse today. I find it interesting that penis size, fear of those who are different, pursuit of the “super pussy.” (I almost wrote “supper pussy,” hmmmm) ect. hold true regardless of how “advanced” we become.

I think racism is not hard-coded but conditioned. In my own experience I feel very at ease with some different appearing people and not others. It’s just conditioning. I haven’t made a Black friend yet, but I’ve known lots of Native Americans and a few people from various parts of Asia. I only feel uncomfortable around Black people because I wonder what their experiences have been, what their worldview might be, and don’t want to mistreat them. Er, because I haven’t spent much time around a Black person yet.
When I encounter Native people I typically don’t even register that they are Native any more than I would that someone has blonde hair or brown eyes etc. It’s more like seeing a tan than a race to me. It’s just a different flavor of appearance when I do notice it.
