The Independent: Russians are coming, but with news or propaganda?

Stacy Summary:  That RT ad campaign really caused a stir in the UK.   Your thoughts on article?

On Russia Today, it was the Brits who were under fire, from shouty American financial journalist Max Keiser. “[Gordon] Brown is very high-minded in his attempts to fight terrorism around the world, but when it comes to financial terrorism he’s doing nothing,” he told viewers of The Keiser Report in an attack on bankers, before accusing the BBC’s most famous rottweiler of being a government patsy. “Jeremy Paxman put out the corporate line? he’s got a huge soapbox with his newscast. Will people see through the propaganda of Jeremy Paxman?”

  1. shouty –;-)

  2. Communication is propaganda

  3. “Its editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan claims that the Russian state “doesn’t at all” interfere with the output of the network’s journalists.”

If you believe this, I have some swamp-land in south’east Florida to sell ya!

  4. The article reads, “Instead, RT blasted “GENOCIDE” across its screens for most of the war’s duration, produced a number of extraordinarily biased packages,”…

Wouldn’t it be nice if they gave details on these packages and explained how they were extraordinarily biased? Nahhh, I’ll take their word for it.

They should throw in the findings of an expert without bothering to name him/her while they’re at it too. “Our expert says RT is Russian propaganda.” Ah. Definitive reporting.

    Selling your home and movin

I guess Stacy has thrown out a softball

  6. “shouty American financial journalist” ROFL

Max, don’t be shy, just say what you feel. O.K.?

Well, regarding propaganda on RT, it’s a lot closer to other investigative journalism than that of MSM in America.

But of course everyone who says something about anything has a slant to it.

  7. Haha. All good publicity for Max Keiser!

MSM is dead anyway. The future is people talking to people directly without these corporate brand identities to hide behind.

‘Your word is your bond,’ and all that.

As a Brit I can’t express how disgusted I am with the BBC. RT’s state propaganda is useful at the moment, but that use is entirely provisional.

  8. Selling your home and movin

I’m sure, WL, that I could sell you half the state. You are a willing buyer?!

  9. Here’s another one from Russia, just out today: Prepare Now to Escape Obama’s Retirement Trap

The largest source of liquid private wealth remaining in the United States are the $15 trillion in private retirement funds and the ultimate ownership, control and future of these funds have already been compromised and exchanged for the favorable tax treatment of private retirement plans. Congress writes the laws, so they can tax, penalize, hold your funds hostage and although they’d never use the word, “confiscate” your assets at their discretion.

The retirement trap I’m writing about is only a proposal at the present time and since it may well begin in the latter years of the Obama Administration assuming the Democrats can somehow maintain their majorities in Congress, I’m calling it the “Obama Retirement Trap”. But make no mistake, the government need for current revenue and their frenzied search for a short-term fix to fund a backstop of liquidity to buy future government debt obligations when no credible investors will buy them is an unspoken quest of both political parties. The establishments of both political parties will do anything to stay in power and this will include raiding and pillaging your retirement funds.

It’s ironic to be reading this from a Russian source. Imagine handing this to someone in 1970…hoo da thunkit?

  10. Bravo Max….

…at least they didn’t call you ” a squeaky financial journalist”.

It’s hard to say who sucks the most…Jeremy Paxman, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly, Anderson Cooper, Brit Hume….etc….etc….

  15. Re: Topic, media and propaganda
I find it suited to repost this story from John Pilger:

“During the Cold War, a group of Russian journalists toured the United States. On the final day of their visit, they were asked by their hosts for their impressions. “I have to tell you,” said their spokesman, “that we were astonished to find, after reading all the newspapers and watching TV, that all the opinions on all the vital issues were, by and large, the same. To get that result in our country, we imprison people, we tear out their fingernails. Here, you don’t have that. What’s the secret? How do you do it?”

    and:

During the 1970s, I filmed secretly in Czechoslovakia, then a Stalinist dictatorship. I interviewed members of the dissident group, Charter 77. One of them, the novelist Zdener Urbanek, told me, “We are more fortunate than you in the West, in one respect. We believe nothing of what we read in the newspapers and watch on television, nothing of the official truth. unlike you, we have learned to read between the lines of the media. Unlike you, we know that that real truth is always subversive. ”By subversive, he meant that truth comes from the ground up, almost never from the top down. (Vandana Shiva has called this ‘subjugated knowledge’).

    and:

Never believe anything until it is officially denied

  27. What a coincidence; international banksters’ UK media wing is caterwauling, at the exact same time, about the exact same thing as OBushBama’s “regulatory caesar” (and fits – to a tee – definition of conspiracy too).

Will comrade Sunstein order “congnitive infiltration” of RT and Max Keiser dot com …

Richard Sambrook says “I slightly worry that many viewers won’t realise there’s an agenda behind these channels …”

The “agenda” is to expose the agenda Richard Sambrook, et al, works for.

  28. “I slightly worry that many viewers won’t realise there’s an agenda behind these channels, but if they watch for long they will recognise it.”

There’s an agenda behind every channel. At least Max has integrity enough to share his agenda here.

  31. Someone explain to me why folk take remarks on the net so personally,.the reason I ask,..it’s beyond me!
    Anyone?

  32. @StacyHerbert. you gonna put your foot down.

  33. On the subject of infiltrating the conspiracy industry, I don’t believe this is new ground. Only newly discussed, as far as it goes. I don’t know the guy, but my impression is that what he said is too open to be a bad sign, or that if it can be said right out loud, how can that be sinister, when it is supposed to be under wraps and a deeply secrete operation.
If anything it will open the eyes of many, hopefully, and should make some take second thoughts about jumping too quickly into the arms of crackpots. That is a good side effect.
No doubt there is a lot of bad thinking out there to begin with, so when the spooks start with intentional agitation, and purposeful promotion of “cognitive diversity” through tricks of “crippling epistemology” and… the like, well, how’s a body going to know what’s real? You won’t… That’s life, reserve judgement.
This is the first I heard of this Sunstein, but he seems to have a well made face. He doesn’t look like a type that would work in the dark world of lies and deception. That’s only a hunch, but his statement is plain and open, even if it’s… epistemological.
The new world, though less brave, may bring more effective means of achieving cognitive diversity. One that is sure to crop up will be the virtual comment. These will be getting better with time, but they may yet be detectable by the use of language. Just as computor speech is usually discernable, the computor
blog comment may still have a few shortcomings. These could be masked by the use of intentional misspelled words, or shortened mock coded sounding speak, and what is quite annoying, that pretense of speaking in jargon or cant to “the knowing.” These tricks mask the computors inability to combine constructive speech with good syntax.
Why else would so many blog comments be rife with cutsey and tangential language unfathomable to usual readers, who, probably have other things to do besides unraveling criptic anonymous internet snippets ? Shed light on it.

  40. it is absolutely hilarious how the BBC patsies go on and on about being “politically impartial” when in absolute fact their mandate to not espouse “political opinion” inexorably finds them being just as, if not more, stubbornly parochial as those whom they criticize; but with one exception – whereas the BBCs competitors are less inclined to deny their obvious and completely natural bias, the BBC in its typically bland and predictable fashion..relentlessly seeks to convince its audience that it and it alone is supplying them with the 1 impartial opinion – laughable…ill post a really great interview between heads of bbc , france 24 and rt in a sec..

    Listen folks
The advantage of the Internet is that you cannot shout down your opponent.
    The words speak for themselves.
You should be in a political argument after 10 pints are sunk in your local pub and then you would know what a argument is.
Being aggressive expressing your political views is refreshing because it exposes the flaws and strengths of your arguments

I have a guy who goes trekking with me and when we get into navigational difficulties we have a good loud argument about where we are and where to go – this exposes the weakness in either of our positions very rapidly
There is really nothing personnel in it but we both recognize that it is the most efficient way to get out of the shit

  48. @Mork from Dork

I agree that arguing your views and analyzing opposing views allows you to redefine and adjust your position. However, there is a caveat, communication is extremely imperfect, the words have shifting meanings, socio and contextual connotations and emotive reactions. Most contrary views are really communication discrepancies.

I always respect honesty even if I disagree and if Max was being honest then he should not apologize as that is where he stands. If he “miscommunicated” then he should clarify.

I am only offended by hypocrisy

  58. Just read that conspiracy paper (other thread) in full. On the whole it’s quite dry. I was hoping for something more Machiavellian.

    A snippet…

‘…if the hard core arises for certain identifiable reasons, it can be broken up or at least muted by government action ["cognitive diversity"]. …there are intrinsic costs to the strategy of giving up on the hard core and directing government efforts solely towards inoculating the mass audience. For one thing, the hard core may itself provide the most serious threat. For another, a response geared to a mass audience (whether or not nominally pitched as a response to the conspiracy theorists) will lead some to embrace rather than reject the conspiracy theory the government is trying to rebut. This is the legitimation dilemma again: to begin a program of inoculation is to signal that the disease is already widespread and threatening. Under pluralistic ignorance, the perverse result may actually be to spread the conspiracy theory further. With an audience already thoroughly in the grip of conspiracy theories, open counterspeech may simply be more grist for the conspiratorial mill.’

  59. frances snoot

    @Bonn:
I remember Max saying that he was told to feel empathy, and he could not, because the people for whom he was told to feel empathy were not empathetic to other nations.

    That sounds fair to me.

But no one can force a condition of feeling on another: it is hypocrisy to do so. Max stated his viewpoint, and we should respect his viewpoint, just as you would have us respect yours.

  66. The BBC is so impartial on this issue that Newsnight offered the space to an outside journalist to do an attack piece against Russia Today, followed by Jeremy Paxman joining the journalist in haranguing a representative from Russia Today.

An impartial view might note that the British English language networks appear unnerved by the encroachment of foreign English language services (especially RT and PressTV.

Odd that Al Jazeera isn’t mentioned, it’s staffed by a lot of ex BBC journalists. Of course state broadcasters like the BBC, RT and PressTV present viewpoints consistent with their sponsors.

The BBC cannot accept it is first and foremost a state broadcaster. It derives it’s notion of ‘impartiality’ from the spectrum of British party politics, so the British establishment is represented at the top, and it’s views expressed in the reporting.

All the UK news networks are stuffed with ‘support the troops’ pro-Army propaganda pieces from anywhere British forces are active. They all credulously report the propaganda churned out by the state in support of those actions.

The gov is not independent, it is bought and paid for in collusion with the special interests. So, it is all powerful yet not interested in exerting that power on its co-conspirators. Any restraint forwarded upon them by the Government is pure Kabuki theatre.

That is the falsehood of statism, really an alchemy of tyranny and fascism. The elites control the government and it works for them at the expense of the individual.

The Unions just got a $60,000,000,000 tax break on healthcare insurance tax.

Some workers are more equal than others…

  123. I’m sorry Bonn left, he shouldn’t take things so to heart. Max was just speaking in general of the American people……generalities are always inaccurate. But, he’s human. What the hell.

    lol @ impartial bbc news!

You cannot be impartial if you are dictated by press releases from interest groups which you passively report. For impartial, read passive, a void filled by public relations and “think tanks”.

I’m not saying it’s good or bad, but the bbc is not impartial, that is such a silly statement, I wonder if it was said with a straight face.

Sky News = BBC News, they seem to receive press releases in their inbox and report the same things.

Mind you, if you want to see saturated coverage of Tiger Woods and Michael Jackson it’s the place to be!

Sure the State is a clusterfuck of Mammoth proportions
But why did we fall so far – do not get me wrong things were never perfect but………
For what its worth I believe we are in this mess because there is no concept of the state as a separate entity.
When this happens lobbyists hold the strings of power since how can you betray a idea that no longer exists.
How can you commit treason when you have no patriotism
(I am thinking of our elected representatives giving ultimate power to utilities)
To give one example that should unite both sides of the political spectrum – Dog soldiers ….. – alarm bells should be ringing loudly in each citizens head when large sections of the armed forces are mercenaries – when soldiers for hire come back they are still for hire – for Gods sake does anybody read History anymore , have they heard of the SS or the brown shirts
    What is going on here
I could go on about other subjects which people could disagree on but what scares me is that previous lines in the sand that everybody could agree on are wiped clean

  147. @The Jerk of Cork

I hear ya. At least on paper statism seems to make sense. The innate primal human drive for power and control corrupts the system as it is made of men. The US constitution was the closest we got to true individual liberty and elites have ran roughshot and disemboweled it while some at the same time swearing an oath to it.
It is tribalism, unfortunately the ruling tribe is the elite, the rest are to be harvested or discarded.

IMO, the Government should protect individual liberties and freedoms from the elites via laws. That is the glossy sales brochure, in reality the Government represents the elites and protects them from “The Common Man”

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQvsf2MUKRQ

  148. The Jerk of Cork

    @WL
You seem to be fixated on groups of workers who consume
But if a society spends most of its capital on consumption it has to consume
A simple example is the Goldman Sachs circus where people criticise Goldman for spending all of its money on bonuses
Yet because of its low capital requirements it can only spend its money on wages or dividends
If it had higher capital requirements it would not be able to pay its servants and owners in fact I doubt it would be in business
Of course this is why the US postion is vunerable since it is running down its collective capital in the interests of the financial mafia

I think people were having the same conversations 1600 years ago and all the talk did not matter Jack shit
The system fell because it was going to fall
Our leaders are corrupt and the proles who elect them are even worse

  152. The unions were responsible for creating the large, vibrant middle class in America.

NAFTA and GATT was the beginning of the end. American workers compete with slave wages, unsafe work environments, no compensation for work injuries, etc.

Unions got a little to strong for their own good. The pendulum would have swung back the other way with time. Instead, the pendulum snapped in two and skewered the middle class.

  153. @Bonn. this ones for you. it makes no difference the band utube.

  154. @The Jerk of Cork

Oh no no, with respect to the US, all roads lead to Triffins Dilemma. The US, as a world reserve to maintain that status (control and a free ride) they must run a deficit equal to the economic growth outside of the US. They must expand their debt model proportionately. So, the Banksters and the Government collude to constantly grow that debt which has hit critical mass. For the US it is consume or die, this is unsustainable. It nearly hit that mass in 1980, but the development of OTC derivatives acted as a “fiat” within a fiat and continued the debt model. Now, the IMF is being prepped to kick the problem over to them and keep the scam going. All money is loaned into existence, so debt and consumption is necessary. That is the corrupt system we are in, not that i like it.

Short of a catastrophe that sets the wealthy temporarily on their heels, has there ever been a time when the common man was running things? No. The best we’ve ever done is mitigate their excessess and make incremental progress in the lives of everyday citizens over time…….If you want to make it better, the question is whether or not you’re going to hold your breath until you turn blue (or hang around in blog comments patting yourself on the back for your world weary cynicism, which is the same thing) or whether you actually give a damn……There actually are avenues to fundamental change besides complaining about politicians……….. intense impatience with this endless, cynical posturing about how everything’s rigged and there’s no point in anything. GATT did more harm than good for all people on the planet. Haiti, for example had the small farmers wiped out when subsidized crops were introduced. You probably don’t even know an American to spit on. You base your personal perfervidity on news or commentary or songs or tv shows or god-knows-what.

People all over the world fight in wars according to their own culpable ignorance.
People all over the world are violent.
People all over the world are cruel.

You reactionaries are so feeble for you are reacting to a tabloid-view of a world which does not exist outside your imaginatory dialogues.

I did not post here to stand in defense of ‘culture’ or ‘nation’. I believe people should be not be judged: I try not to. I try to accept each person according to their own attributes and talents, not the labels or tags designed by Madison Avenue or tv sitcoms.

When I was in England, I was often regarded as an oddity for the very basis of the English observer having a few hours spent pouring over some re-runs on telly.

When our country is in disarray and arrears, you may all cheer your ballied ignorance and hail you hypocrisy. To delight in the distress of others is a very ‘human’ quality.

To what extent this applies to the UK is unclear, but Sky News is a US TV network by ownership.

The US is a debtor nation — one of the greatest debtor nations ever to exist — and as such it has lost its rights to full access to the airwaves.

China, Iran and Russia should not as states jam directly — but contract out to groups that have been put at disadvantage by the US — this way plausible denyability can be maintained.

  314. frances snoot

“DAMN Max allows us all to stand on his shoulders and get our agendas across on here…”

Max should be grateful for the time and talent seen on this ‘comment section’. Instead of thanks or credit, I’ve received abuse and marginalization. My ideas are consistent and lucid.

I’ve written at university level and only ever received an A on all my work, on all my essays. My professor indicated that he preferred my papers to all the ones he had ever read.

Is that ‘puffing up pride’? I mention that because I was told I ‘had no knowledge’, wrote ‘juxtapoetry’, and was ‘pointless’.

SG insists Max is out for the common man, but this site declares otherwise. Topics that are pertinent are ignored in favor of those that favor a European perspective whilst denigrating American people or culture.

One example would be the covered bond issue coming out of the EU this winter. American enterprise was not permitted to issue these bonds due to restrictions put in place by European regulators. The same regulators now stand to make securitization, as it is written in America, unprofitable, and to close down the American economy and deny access to credit to the American people through banking accounting regulations. The covered bonds are permitted under the very regulations the Europeans wrote themselves.

It is Europeans who have issued fiat the sdr (250+B) which are used to make liquid a reserve for all nations. It is the Europeans who profit from the sdr as accounting unit: it is the unit of account for both the IMF and the BIS. It is European influence seen in the finance secretaries that sit on the IMF governing board and, Rasputin-like, concierge European interests in every nation operating under the IMF/G20 system.

America’s ‘collapse’ (looting) will not end the IMF/G20, it only consolidates power and monopoly in European hands. Risk will be denied those deigned unsavory to this colonizing empire based

    IN EUROPE.

Our Congress is ‘owned’ by George Soros, who represents the profit/margin of Europeans, not Americans.

The Europeans are culpable in allowing their own superstate machine to prelate the IMF and to colonize innocent indigenous people through the proxy arm of the US military.

Am I ‘free’ to say that here, SG? Because you and the site manager may take my freedom away to write here, but you cannot marginalize nor deny individual freedom to Americans nor can your fascist-driven ideologies. Freedom is an inherent right.

Issuers, which have included Barclays (BARC.L), Credit Suisse (CSGN.VX), Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE) and Santander (SAN.MC), have sold some $16.55 billion of Yankee bonds so far this year, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Covered bonds market hits record level

By Alex Chambers and Jane Merriman

LONDON, Jan 15 (Reuters) – Europe’s banks have dominated a rush of new bond issues this month, including in the U.S. dollar domestic bond market, where they have made up the bulk of issuance so far this year.

As Europe’s banks start refinancing 935 billion euros ($1,349 billion) of debt falling due in the next three years they are looking for cash wherever it’s available.

Covered bonds have been in the spotlight as a relatively low-cost instrument to refinance and extend maturity profiles that became more truncated in the run up to the credit crisis.

Issuance of covered bonds, highly-rated securities backed by pools of mortgages or public sector loans, has reached 21.9 billion euros this month, according to Thomson Reuters data.

  318. frances snoot

LONDON—The market for covered bonds, the high-quality bank debt that the European Central Bank identified last year as a weapon in fighting the credit crunch, is off to a roaring start in 2010.

This week, European banks from six countries have sold more than €10 billion ($14.41 billion) of covered bonds in seven deals, in spite of the absence of some European investors for the Epiphany holiday Wednesday.

If one substitutes the nomer IMF for US Treasury, then it makes sense. Look at it as an Irish gift to the G20 political machine. It will be denominated in sdr soon enough: new suit and tie. But the reserve surplus/deficits will be all mixy/maxy in a kitty called the International Clearing Union reserve or somesuch and will be ‘forgiven’ for a new world of the uni-servant-to-the-international-elite families. We won’t be told this. We’ll be told nice words that make all sound like heaven descending: above and below. About the world being saved ready for our progeny: although we won’t be allowed to breed or live in family units.

Indexes should integrate complex realities, such as crime, the environment and the efficiency of the health system, as well as income inequality.”

Suprasovereign standards driven not for the economic gain of individuals but for those whom Stiglitz and Sarkozy serve. The new measures will be punitive, no doubt of that, for regions (we might as well begin speaking as our ‘betters’ do) which do not cooperate with IMF functionaries according to export market decision or internal controls.

The standardised approach is modeled on the existing risk-weighting
methodology for banking book assets. However, unlike the old approach
for assigning risk-weightings, the new risk-weightings for assets
under the BIS II proposals are more granular and are broken down
according to external credit ratings. Banks, whose risk management
procedures and internal models do not satisfy the minimum criteria
required by the IRB approach, have to use the standardised approach.
    (external credit ratings=fitch/standard/moodys=criminal fraud)
    This most simple
    application of Basel
    I will likely only be
    used by smaller, less
    sophisticated banks

Regulatory treatment of covered bonds BIS I vs. BIS II/
    EU CRD
Art. 22(4) of the EU UCITS Directive10 85/611/EEC lists some
eligibility criteria for the privileged treatment of covered bonds11.
Annex VI of the CRD defines eligible assets. Covered bonds complying
with these eligibility criteria can be risk-weighted 10%. There are
some states that treat these bonds like any other bank bond with a
risk weight of 20% (including UK, Italy, Portugal, Sweden). The new
structured covered bond by ABN Amro, issued without a legal framework,
    is also 20% risk-weighted.
Basel I and Basel II do not specifically address covered bonds. The
Most covered bonds are currently 10% risk-weighted.
    Basel II and Banks
(CRD), drawn up based on a proposal from the Basel Committee, sets out
that covered bonds will benefit from special treatment if they comply
with Article 22(4) of the UCITS Directive and are collateralised by a
series of eligible assets12. Under the Draft Directive, the weighting
of covered bonds is based implicitly on the financial strength and
therefore tied to the credit rating of the issuing institution, and is
not based on the quality of the cover assets (see Tables 5 and 6), and
differs from Basel II’s approach to securitization. As a result,
regulatory capital requirements for bank investors in covered bonds
will increase if the senior unsecured rating of the covered bond
    issuer falls.
    http://www.securitization.net/pdf/Nomura/BaselII_20Sept05.pdf

Preferential risk weighting for covered bonds under basel 2? Yes. And IRB banks may use covered bonds as asset collateral as well.
