Also before the first world war Sterling was the worlds reserve currency even when France or Germany held more Gold
This was because Britain controlled the bulk of future supply which was in South Africa and also it was the clearing house for gold and other transactions
Also if the US went back on the Gold standard in 1980 it could not have been able to go into deficit to finance the Cold War and we would be debating how the hell we break The Soviet Empire
Going into limited deficit can be a good thing if it finances future capital expansion

If you choose violence over co-operation, then inevitably you’re going to gang with others to *use* your violence. Fact of life.
But, this is for everyone an individual decision. Co-operation would create and spread, violence and destruction would wither and wilt – unless, of course, more previously non-violent people chose violence – but why should they given the immediate ostracism they would face and the only alternative being the joining of a lonely group of violent gangs?
These scary gangs that are supposed to fill an abstract ‘power vacuum’ in states of “lawlessness” are made up of individuals choosing violence. That is it. No violent individual = No gang. You will notice that every fundamentalism (for what else is a philosophy of violence) ends up eating itself. Diversity of thought amongst these gangs would require a temporary reprieve of violence – this being a victory, of sorts, to the non-violent majority. Then what? the gangs figure out they can achieve more non-violently??
The common good is everywhere arrived at voluntary, because voluntaryism *is* itself ‘the common good’ and *by* the common good (people). What better good is there than being able to live without the threat of force? Does anyone believe a government can provide such a thing, when government itself is an agent of force?

On top of that you can pretty much see Cuba from Florida and Venezuala’s longest border is with Columbia the strongest ally of the US in Latin America. If it did (for reasons unknown to me) need to put pressure on these countries would it not make sense to base the 10000 troops in Florida or maybe increase it’s presence in Columbia (the US has less than 200 troops there right now)?
Or maybe it could just use one of it’s 11 carrier battle groups to acomplish this encirlement? None of this messy reconstruction and occupation bussiness that way!
And lets not forget Puerto Rico just to the East of Hati which is part of US territory. I can’t see why Puerto Rico wouldn’t serve as a base from which to encirle Venezuala or Cuba. And again there’d be none of this messy reconstruction and occupation stuff.
Now that I think about it the US already has around 1000 troops in Guantanemo Bay, which, seen as it’s on Cuba would make for a good spot invade or just generally fuck around with the Cuban Communist Dictatorship government if the US government has nothing to do on the weekend
Why the US would decide to encircle Cuba now as opposed to any time in the last 50 odd years? And I can’t see the US fucking around with the Chinese oil fields considering the money they just pumped into Iraq to get the oil flowing there. And would it really be worth pissing off China just to get whatever bit of oil Cuba has.

Also the reason the US hasn’t sent 10000 doctors or Aid workers is because they don’t tend to hang around waiting to be sent somewhere. Thats the great thing about standing armies, they stand around so their there when you need them. Doctors and Aid workers are not known for doing this.
Another reason you might send US Marines is that they tend to be big fellows. Very big infact. So big that they’re usually quiet good at lifting stuff, like say a building thats collapsed ontop of someone.
As for suppressing the regions economies, if thats what the US is up to it really hasn’t been doing a very good job lately considering the rate which the economy of Brazil, the counryt in the region most likely to challenge US influence there has been developing in the last 10 years, with Chile and Argintina not far behind.
Ergo I can’t really see why the US would be going to Hati other than to help the poeple of Hati out. It definatly has easier options if it wants a military base in the region and other than that I really don’t know what Hati has to offer the US (unless there are huge oil reserves under there I’m not aware of).
So I can’t really see what the US is getting out of this and maybe just maybe the US does some good in the world and the government doesn’t consist of pure evil.

Robert Gates has done more to reign in military spending by the DOD than any previous Secratary of Defence for decades cancelling wateful projects such as the F22 fighter, Airbourne Laser and the Future Combat Systems. The only reason the defense buget is at an all time high is to pay for the US troops in Afganistan and Iraq.

Their climate makes it impractical for someone to invest in real positive things like education, permaculture farming, etc. Because you’re investment will be destroyed or it’s benefits stolen before you get a return. For example the child whose education a poor family invests in, just ends up murdered in their early twenties, or there is no market for a local farmer’s produce as it has to compete with fake food subsidized with ecological harm, foreign slave labor, and absurdly cheap non-renewal energy. So it ends up an economy of plunder. I think all economics of me versus you rather than me and you, will always devolve into this. In Canada people have bought into this model through for example, hoarding housing and gouging anyone who just so happens to need shelter. Similarly we have unions that suffer from the corruption of job security and pay by seniority rather than merit or need.

I was having a conversation about all this while waiting to pay my fine a couple of days ago… the guy stood next to me had a on the spot fine for swearing at two traffic wardens… I think you do 6 weeks inside if you don’t pay…. swearing in public was my crime also… All because… a few months back… I saw a copper trying to arrest a girl of about fourteen in the street (from my daughters school) the copper had the girl face down on the pavement with his knee in her back …almost breaking her shoulder with an arm lock… I started screaming at him is that how his mother had brought him up to treat girls or women… and he was a PRICK!!!… ooops guess who ends up in a POLICE VAN as well… £100 fine and a court appearance… sometimes I’m so asamed of this country…and it wasone of the saddest experiences in my life!!!
