    @Sherri –
Check out this guy who pushes electricity INTO his house FROM his Prius during Ice Storms in Vermont.
    http://www.priups.com/riddle/answer-1.htm

Got a question about the Plug-In Hybrid?
    http://priuschat.com/forums/prius-phev-plug-in-modifications/

These guys have been doing work on various PHEV solutions. The least costly and most rigged solution appears to be around $6000.

It appears that your car can travel up to 40 miles in a single charge with an 8-10 KWHr charge capacity installed after-market.

The Prius car is a huge breakthrough for people wanting to tell the Gas Corp’s and Sempra to screw off.

By cross circuiting your car to the house, you can literally run the house in an emergency. By cross circuiting the house to the car, you can literally drive the car.

The only other step for total energy independence would be to install a combo of PV, solar thermal, and Wind or other generation sources.

I even started looking at water wheels. Based upon a combination of all of those things, you should be energy independent within about 5-7 years… just in time for the doubling in the gas prices to $7.00 a gallon.

  3. California Doctor

    @Sherri –

Actually, some Prius drivers have inserted their own “black box” micro-PC device to gather that data instantaneously.

This way if the idiot CHP pulls you over, you can replay for him BEFORE he writes the ticket and tries to f’you over.

CHP officers and County yokels need to think twice before pulling hybrid drivers over BECAUSE of the black box and our own monitoring data that can trump the false accusation in court.

  4. @ Youri

My 2007 Prius has a black box. I think if I get pulled over for a bogus speeding ticket I might go to court and insist that the jurisdiction prove the case by tapping the black box. I’d also insist that they absorb the cost. I’m innocent until proven guilty, so they should have to evaluate the proof, right?

How do you protect citrus from the freeze?
I have two dwarf citrus planted last year but are not doing that great… I think it may be the colder than usual weather and inconsistent watering.

  6. Hey, you know what I think, Stacy and Max? I think that you guys should interview some Libertarians, like Thomas E. Woods. Talk about subsidies, and kind of the history of this whole thing. Maybe Glenn Greenwald too, some civil libertarian.

    Thanks.

  7. @Marc Authier

Well yourright but I am in the Netherlands which could be even worse cause they already planned for a black box in every car!!!! And the MTFs don’t even mind to get exterminated. Their retarded here.

The big mistake people make is in believing that Bernanke used Keynes. He didn’t cause putting a lot of money in banks to make up for snake eye bets and to sit on it has nothing to do with Keynes and the real economy.

If all that money really had been spend in the real economy we wouldn’t have this crises anymore and have much more inflation.

That’s the “beauty” of this banking heist by these shysters cause if people believe that they can pull even more money from the real economy under the disguise of preventing inflation ahahahahaaaah!

“Fear the Boom and Bust” a Hayek vs. Keynes Rap Anthem

Econstories.tv is a place to learn about the economic way of thinking through the eyes of creative director John Papola and creative economist Russ Roberts.

In Fear the Boom and Bust, John Maynard Keynes and F. A. Hayek, two of the great economists of the 20th century, come back to life to attend an economics conference on the economic crisis. Before the conference begins, and at the insistence of Lord Keynes, they go out for a night on the town and sing about why there’s a “boom and bust” cycle in modern economies and good reason to fear it.

  15. @CalDoc: I am slowly installing a medicinal (non-pot) herb garden- plants like lavender, rosemary, aloe, etc. I figure there are already plenty of “growers” around the area. The raised beds are doing fine, I have great-looking winter vegies that survived the freeze here. And I have 11 fruit trees planted so far. Expensive, high-tech stuff is out of my budget, but I can manage with the old-fashioned farming techniques. I would invest in food plants that are hardy and need little input.

  21. Because solar is its infancy and has the same problem as the wind. It’s intermittent, very diffuse, dispersed, NOPE. The 30 trillions would better invested in nuclear fusion et surgenerators that can burn 100% of all uranium and all the plutonium. Presently the actual nucleat plants only burn 3% of the fissible matter, A shame and an horrible waste of 97% ! I know it’s risky. But no energy is rikless, solar included. Yes solar included. And the effecciency of solar wil never be good because you cannot concentrate it. The atom is where the real potential is. Almost no CO2. But we have to find a way of burning 100% of the fissible matter. That’s where the 30 trillion shoulb be put. Nuclear and supraconductivity.

  23. Québec Gold is the best ! Personnally I don’t smoke, I use self hypnosis. Does the trick. You have a fantastic guy in California that teaches self hypnosis. Gil Boyne.

You cannot imagine how all our brains all the drugs needed. He is not particularly hot on the stuff. He is right. But still. The stuff should be legalized. That we could ruin the crooks running the CIA and the arm’s business financed by hard drugs lile the opium in Afghanistan.

Did you know than with hypnosis or accupuncture you can generate natural opiates. I think they call them endorphines. Accupuncture really gives you one fantastic feeling too if you have for one reason or another problem hypnotizing yourself. It’s quite easy and soo fantastic.

TRY THIS INSTEAD. Natural and generated DIRECTLY by your own brain. It works. Better that you dutch poison. And hypnosis doesn’t finance the arm’s business.

  26. @Underfunded

Yes, I am down with 4th Generation Modular Nuclear Reactors…
    and Socialized Electricity…
It worked well in BC until the gov’t privatized it…

Thorium? I thought that was used to deplete spent Uranium?
and also as a welding alloy (2% I believe) in reactor pipe-fitting…

  27. @CaliDoc

    What crops are you growing?
Different plants have different flower/fruit times to harvest…
Also, from my experience, I would recommend you research DWC (Deep Water Culture)…
I found it to be the easiest to set-up, least expensive and easiest to maintain…
Hydro using drip or water-tables (with rockwool or coconut fiber) is difficult, and aeroponics is by far the most problematic (the damn sprayers need regular checking and maintenance)

I also found DWC to be the most PRODUCTIVE as well…
    Perhaps the K.I.S.S. principle applies…
Make sure you have a good pH and ppm meter…
be careful about what chemicals you use for food, go with organic teas as much as possible…

You can battle mold issues by having good ventilation (which is critical anyway)… keep air moving…
really, you can probably find out all the basic info from a Marijuana site, and then apply the theories to whatever types of crops you grow…

    Also, learn to CLONE…
again, there is a cheap and easy method that’s part DWC/ part Aeroponics which I found to be ULTRA-Successful at cloning… don’t even need rooting hormones…
The reason cloning is useful, is that once you find some good genetics, then you might as well keep growing them since you already know the food requirements etc…
when you start mucking around with different seeds, you are going to screw around with different Genotypes, which inevitably leads to different Phenotypes (i.e. environmental requirements)

  28. California Doctor

    @underfunded –

    That’s the “herd mentality”.

It’s been studied well by the sociologists and psychologists.
There is a wierd thing that we do as people.
In big cities, people can end up ignoring warning signs because they have the erroneous belief that the neighbor will fix it for them by default.

So, you can have a car alarm sounding on the street with a burglar busting the window in broad daylight and nobody intervenes to even call the police.

I think that is how the crooks are getting away with the big bailout scandals. They figure if they do the crowd control correctly, and then insert calm into the population’s mind, that they’ll continue to run off with the goods.

Unfortunately, there’s enough bloggers who are shouting “crook!”.

  35. marietta , thats the seed company I bought from last year. Good seeds. I bought some seeds from them for this year as well. But also bought this year from gernericseeds.com. Cause they had plants my sister likes.

  36. California Doctor

    @ marietta –
I’m considering running the hydroponics on solar yes.
It depends on the electrical power required to power the lights.

Roughly 1 KW of solar energy falls on each square meter of land. Due to the very poor efficiency of photovoltaics, you will only get about 100 watts of the 1000 watts which hits the panel. So, to run a 1 square meter set of lights all night, you would likely need to have 10 square meters of PV collector space.

Therefore, you would need a much more efficient way of collecting, storing, and then using the solar energy incident to that same square meter.

I am developing the idea that the plants likely grow best with longer light. So, night time use of the lighting system would be good, but energy consumptive.

Mylar is a good idea to reflect the light and focus it.

I’m looking at this very carefully and think Mylar is out of vogue at Home Depot and Lowe’s. Neither store stocks mylar rolls at all. Yet, the mylar is the most reflective and lightest source of highly reflective metallic covering.

‘As soon as you say the topic is civil disobedience, you are saying our problem is civil disobedience. That is not our problem…. Our problem is civil obedience. Our problem is the numbers of people all over the world who have obeyed the dictates of the leaders of their government and have gone to war, and millions have been killed because of this obedience.’
‘When in all the nations of the world the rule of law is the darling of the leaders and the plague of the people, we ought to begin to recognize this. We have to transcend these national boundaries in our thinking. Nixon and Brezhnev have much more in common with one another than – we have with Nixon. J. Edgar Hoover has far more in common with the head of the Soviet secret police than he has with us. It’s the international dedication to law and order that binds the leaders of all countries in a comradely bond. That’s why we are always surprised when they get together — they smile, they shake hands, they smoke cigars, they really like one another no matter what they say. It’s like the Republican and Democratic parties, who claim that it’s going to make a terrible difference if one or the other wins, yet they are all the same. Basically, it is us against them.’
    h zinn 1970

  41. California Doctor

    @marietta – hopefully that’s a medical purpose grower….

I get your drift, and that’s bad news for that neighborhood. I’d say that the basement growers are creating a mold problem for their house. The right thing to do is to try short-growth cycle crops and then rotate them every 4-6 months. My guess is that planting now should be pretty good for a summer harvest. But if you plant at the wrong time, you could end up with alot of garden work in the midst of hot July.

Where do you find your seed stock?

  42. California Doctor

    @Marc -
It doesn’t really matter if its a gang in NYC or Chicago or not.
The reality is that these people are required to take an immediate loss rather than expose themselves to a 3 or 6 month T-bill.
I don’t yet understand that… up until the last 48 hours, the 1-3-6 was moving in tandem.

For some reason the 1 month T-bill broke down and the 3-month and 6-month t-Bills broke to the upside today.

    That’s weird.

It suggests that people in the know are readying for something bad in 4-12 weeks.

  43. The one power source that everyone is ignoring is the one thats already in place. The dams that are in place now. They could retrofit alot more generators in the dams they have now to produce alot more electricity.

I”m guessing theres some political reason this is never brought up.

  46. @calidoc
The only reason I mention it is because a relative of mine has a neighbor that is growing something in their basement and i don’t think it’s for eating. My relative is elderly and has no clue but anyone under 65 could figure it out easily.

  47. Speaking of Haiti, as far as I can tell the entire US relief package is $100 million, well behind Canada and Brazil, and equal to just 2/3 of the ADVERTISING budget for the film AVATAR. The combined efforts of all countries should top around $1 billion, which is about 1/60 of the money stolen by Bernie Madoff, and still less than the interest the US pays to service its national debt in ONE DAY.

  48. @California Doctor
En tout cas.Who the hell is buying that US treasuries crap anyways ?. Better to buy a piece farm land than US treasuries. 80% ot the crap might I remind you is monetization by the MAFIA at the FED. The not existant yields on the treasuries are a fraud. Who in their rigth mind would buy this manure at 00000000000000 % interest rates ? What a pack of bul,.

The 1 month US T-Bill yield fell to 0.01.
But the 3month and 6 month moved up slightly.
Do you think this means that “investors” are more interested in 1 month than 3 month T-bills due to risk in the 4-12 week timeframe?

  53. Oh no! Howard Zinn died. Very sad to hear that.

  54. California Doctor

I also shared your delight in seeing the Sup Ct justices squirm. Since they wade into political waters, it’s about time that the POTUS kicked their chairs a bit.

  55. California Doctor

    @Marietta -

The DEA can’t figure out where the Schedule I and II drugs end up anyway. Having the DEA or FBI raid my home due to hydroponics will be laughable. I’ll personally go to the judge who signs that order and kick his ass out of that puni-muni court seat. After all, the corporations can now FUND the judge.

The neighbors will be the LAST people to know because I have no intention of letting ANYBODY know I can sustain my own family during the SHTF scenario.

If I could, I’d learn t make my own penicillin too. If I could get my hands on the seed stock of mold, I’d be able to set my lab up and isolate my own drugs. What’s wrong with that? I should be able to produce United States made drugs. But, this stupid state would rather chase all the biotech firms from the Bay Area and San Diego area.

Since you’re mostly out of California, congratulations on picking up the real companies and productivity.

And, to the numb-nut morons in Sacramento – “FLIP OFF”.

If you’re in the south, why should you make a pigrimage to Winn-Dixie every time you need bread.

If you’re in California, why should you suck up to Safeway – Von’s – Pavillion’s for the same?

    You shouldn’t.

Farmer’s market is one thing. That’s cool and fine. But, starting to grow your own food in perpetuity and sustainably allows people to get the vegetables you need.

  56. California Doctor

    @jon – TV attention span…

You can actually alter the attention span of the population by altering the stuff in the food supply. If you limit certain fatty acids in the diet, you can alter the ability of the brain to focus on a topic and stay on it.

The Congress might have this issue in the Congressional cafeteria. They need to serve boat loads of fish, especially salmon to these idiots. They need to stay on the fish diet until November and alter the oils used to cook the “freedom fries”.

    I’m not kidding either.

My guess is that they have nobody actually reviewing the diet of the Congress. Just take a look at how fat the Senators are. Hillary Clinton looks like she’s about 20 lbs lighter now than in 2006. Look at McCain, the guy’s double-chin is bad.

When the POTUS introduced his wife and commented on obesity, I think half the Congress and Supreme Court took a gulp and looked down at their lap in shame.

  57. @calidoc
make sure you let all your neighbors know and see what you are growing via hydroponics. You don’t want any one calling the DEA on you!

  58. California Doctor

    @Marietta -
I saw that headshake that BOTH Alito and Chief Justice Roberts did. I think they’re mistaken.

The country does not need this type of decision and it harms our political process.

There was a very significant comment on C-SPAN by former Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. Justice O’Connor correctly pointed to EXACTLY the issues I immediately raised on this blog.

LOCAL COURTS and some STATE COURTS are ELECTED. The Supreme Court has just forced us citizens to abide by LOCAL corporate interests who can buy political favors by supporting the candidate judges.

SO, if you try and sue that EXACT company through the local courts (usually municipal superior court), you will ALWAYS lose because the judge is ALREADY PAID by that exact CORPORATION!

    We’re screwed!

  59. Marcy Kaptur senses (if not by other means) a thing or two: Geithner could be mistaken for Jeff Skilling–if not identified as the same sub-human species…

Those occasional smirks don’t do much for his life expectancy.

  60. California Doctor

@Sherri – You took the words right out of my keyboard!

I just started getting info on hydroponics and am doing calculations on the energy needed to support stronger growth cycles, even during winter.

If anyone has any links which relate hydroponic and aeroponic growth systems to crop yield, I’d appreciate it.

I get better yield by planting trees than from treating 2000 patients and waiting for either political party to sign the checks their mouths write.

l totally agree Supremes have too much power. The big mistake was life long appointments. They should have something like staggered 15 year appointments. They know all they have to do is hang on long enough so they can retire during the term of a like minded administration. Then the make of the court never changes.

  70. Sorry if this is a repost:

U.S. One-Month Bill Rate Negative for First Time Since March

As I have said before, negative overnight interest rates are necessary here, I just assume the commercial banking sector will fight it all the way.

  77. @Sherri
You’ll never see the supremes applaud for anything during the state of the union. That’s their way of showing they are “non political”
    There is an explanation here:

A commenter does state that Alito shook his head “no” during the comment Obama made about the supremes recent campaign finance decision. THat is considered a violation of the impartiality protocol.

These people – the Al Gores, the bankers, the govt officials (who do not understand that they are our employees), some of the people in law enforcement – these people inspire me. Their corruption and mismanagement and greed and power-grabbing have been absolutely inspirational. I used to invest in biotech companies, but saw too much of how the FDA works then saw prop trading turn the equity markets into a farce. That inspired me to quit investing in biotech then get out of the markets almost entirely. I’m inspired to decrease my exposure to bureaucracy and lawyers, therefore I am no longer working in nursing. I’m inspired to avoid GMO foods with unknown risks, so I have a new greenhouse where I am planting non-GMO seeds and will be engaging in some hydroponic growing. I’ve been inspired to transact more and more in cash. It’s time to quit lining their pockets.

    Starve the beast.

That had the feel of a celebrity grafter roast.
Stilted and contrived with brief moments of nervous laughter.
The gap between reality and perception is daunting.

  88. Justget Itright

The regulatory behemoth that would be unleashed by the cap-and-trade legislation, if it were to become law, starts with a group of “experts” deciding how much carbon dioxide and other “greenhouse gases” the earth’s atmosphere can withstand. These then become the “targets” that bad-guy emitters (such as manufacturing plants) would have to meet by “buying” annual “emission permits” from Uncle Sam or on the secondary market. They could trade — that is, buy and sell — their permits to meet their target or cap; hence the term, “cap-and-trade.” The number of permits drops annually until a “safe” level of emissions is reached.

Some 85 percent of the initial offering of permits would be given to certain favored industries, states and Indian tribes. These entities, of course, could then trade them to other “polluters.” All this would be monitored and enforced by government bureaucrats.
As if this scenario would not be enough to make your eyes roll and your hands rush to grab your wallet and hold it near, there is yet another bureaucratic overlay nestled in the legislation . The bill establishes a mechanism for “polluters” to obtain two billion “offsets” that would allow them to emit more greenhouse gasses than their permits would otherwise allow. These “offsets” consist of paying for “green projects” in the U.S. or — get this — somewhere else on the globe.

Thus, a manufacturing plant in, say, Gary, Ind., that is exceeding its “permitted” expulsion of CO2, could continue to commit this sin against humanity by paying for a Brazilian farmer to plant some trees in the rain forest. A more patriotic company might achieve the same result by paying an Iowa former to implement more “Earth-friendly” farming practices. Of course, to guard against some nefarious polluter trying to cheat Uncle Sam and the world by claiming bogus “offsets,” there must be a monitoring mechanism. Enter the “Offsets Integrity Advisory Board” — yet another group of scientific “experts” that would be tasked with compiling a list of qualifying offsets around the globe.

Utility companies would be required to purchase increasing percentages of their electricity from “renewable sources,” but they could meet these mandates, at least in part, by forcing their customers to reduce their energy usage. Those customers — that is, every individual, family and business in the country — also would be forced to change building codes in order to use less energy, change lighting systems employed in homes and outdoor areas, and buy more expensive “energy-efficient” appliances.

This discussion barely scratches the surface of the Byzantine system of mandates and favors that would be doled out by the government if this legislation reaches Obama’s desk. The cost is impossible to calculate, except to know it will be in the trillions of dollars. For a plan based on bad science and proposing to implement a model that’s already failed in Europe, that’s a price no responsible American ought to accept. But, how can you put a pricetag on saving the world and all of mankind?

  89. @Sherri
It’s their goal. Cap and trade is a just WONDERFUL tax to destroy jobs and anhilate the middle class. This is the plan. People like Al Gore and Goldman Sachs want to EXTERMINATE the middle classes. It’s their objective everywhere. You don’t need all this money anyways. It’s not yours. It belongs to Al Gore you futur slave. Welcome to the carbon tax dictatorship. It’s a fantastic idea. Crap and rape tax is absolutely vital to destroy for good any chances to maintain alive the middle class standard of living. It’s their goal. Stangke them with imploding asset bubbles, stangle then with exploding interest rates, strangle them with eternal 0% interest rates on savings. strangle with disspearing pension funds, stangle them with health care cost, stangle them witn banks bailout. strangle them with psychological warfare with terrorism and H1N1, strangle them with 22% unemployment. It’s for you. They want you dead.
    They do.

Getting expertise from the third world was a very good choice by the slaves masters in New-York. A real good idea when you think about Obamama. And to think all these bastards globalists sold globalisation as a great tool to develop a worldwide middle class ? Yeah sure. Who woudda thought such a thing ? Goulag statehood. Not bad. 2000$ US per US family. Not bad at all. I really the notion. Maybe the US government should make up a special income tax. Special US government tax for paying yearly bonuses and commissions to our nation’s bankers. Special “Save our bankers and polar bears fund.”

  126. @Dedo
Slavery had nothing to do with color. That factor was added later. It’s about class war between rich and poor, The dominant and dominated. Greeks would practice slavery between themselfves, All Europeans too. Russians too. The color component was added many centuries after. Slavery is about class war. Always have been in the first place. “It’s about the economy stupid.” like they say. It’s slill exist and it’s about making money for nothing.

  136. Could somebody find out, or estimate, how much money Geithner personnally made on that crime ? Certainly all the money is in a Cayman Island bank account ? By the way Geithner doesn’t pay one red cent of income tax. Like Paulson. They haven’t for years and years. Don’t forget to pay your carbon tax and your heath care tax, and your tax on your tax too and your 29,9% interest on your Citigroup’s credit card.

    Seems like only yesterday,
    http://thedartmouth.com/2008/10/03/news/geithner
‘Susan Blader, Dartmouth professor of Asian and Middle Eastern languages and literature who instructed Geithner in Chinese during his first year at the College, said he was a “natural language learner.”
Blader also expressed confidence in Geithner’s abilities, claiming that he brings valuable perspective to his job because he does not have a traditional background in economics.

“Tim is a straight arrow, and he’s a very upright person,” she said. “I trust his judgment implicitly.”

After graduating from Dartmouth, Geithner attended Johns Hopkins University, where he earned a master’s degree in international economics.

He worked as a consultant for three years at Kissinger and Associates in Washington, D.C, before joining the International Affairs division of the Treasury Department in 1988.’

When Obama is down in the polls, nothing better that vomitting on muslims and arabs and rising from the dead the Osama CIA/Mossad clown. I don’t need your preaching about racism Mep. Slavery has always been a big business in the USA. It’s not just an arab or european invention. You never miss in the USA to find a mean foreigner. When it’s not the mean Iranians, it’s the real real mean muslims. Yeah. Obama is a racist himself with his Osame Ben Laden crap. Yeah crap. Pure fabricated crap.

  153. @ Marc – Just going to sit back and take all of your defensiveness and completely illogical comparisons in. Referencing Max’s pimp comments is the only comparison you’ve made that makes any sense. And, no, I didn’t consider it racist given the whole bailout context that he placed those comments in. Referring to Obama as Obanana without any context is a different thing. Had you said ANYTHING about banana republics, I wouldn’t have jumped on your case.

  154. @Mep
Hey Mep ? What to see what a sick racist joke looks like ? Try the Ben Laden clown by your buddies at Al-CIA-aida. Now that’s racist towards muslims and arabs. Watch out, Maybe Mep will call you an anti-semite because you are attacking bankers. I am suprised that nobody has attacked Max on that basis. In France if you criticize Wall Street and the big banks, some TV shows compare you immedialety to a “négationniste”. If you do not approve the taxpayer’s raping by the bankers, you are immediately labeled a holocaust denier.

    Anything goes with these banksters.

“Racist” “KKK” “Nazi” “Anti-semite” “Anti-African” “Anti-Ecologist’ ‘Communist” “Anarchist” “Socialist” ‘National Socialist” “Holocaust denier” and naturally “Unamerican”

Can keep track of the insults when you attack the mafia running France but also the USA.

Oupsss I forgot “Islamo fascist” “Terrorist” “Whimp” and “Traitor”

  164. go on then…i will have some of them bananas….

But you cannot make fun of a guy that is EXACTLY like Bush, You can mock Ben Laden and the muslin as crak up fanatics but never dare attacking extreme right from Israel. Yeah political correctness misplaced. You love your america banana republic wiht your oligarchs. The same people were laughing and vomitting at Russia 10 years ago. Obama is a wise guy. AIG, Paulson and Geithner
    These hearings are simply amazing.

First, Tim Geithner. Timmy made a lot of noise about “total meltdown” risk (and indeed even referenced the possible loss of civil order!) but the question that was not asked is this: Who stoked that fear in Congress? That would be Bernanke and Paulson, right? They in fact told Congress “either hand over $700 billion for buying troubled assets or tanks will be in the streets.”

But then – on top of that – they didn’t do what they said they needed the money for and there were no tanks!

So we’re stuck with a handful of facts, none of which are in dispute:

1.Congress was told that either $700 billion be handed out immediately or civil order would be lost. They were told this by Bernanke and Paulson and believed it.

2.Congress took the action Paulson and Bernanke demanded but then did not spend the money as they said they would, and yet the “or else” did not happen.

3.Yet neither Paulson or Geithner will take responsibility for the precise actions taken during what they, along with Bernanke, claimed was literally an “end of the world” event!
Paulson gets the cake though – he admitted (under oath!) that The Fed just blatantly printed the money to rescue AIG and the banks (!!!)

So let’s see – it wasn’t his decision, it wasn’t Timmy’s decision, and yet at the very same time the entire world was about to come to an end unless the Congress immediately handed over $700 billion of taxpayer money?

Oh, and let’s keep going. Paulson got skewered with what I pointed out in August of last year – that is, that he knew full well he wasn’t going to buy any “toxic assets” prior to the final vote being taken in The House but notified nobody in Congress of this fact.

Then Mr. Baxter’s turn comes and he says that Geithner signed off on paying AIG counterparties at par.

Didn’t Timmy claim he had no part in the negotiations with AIG and the determination of what to pay? I thought he did….. maybe I misheard, but I seem to remember that he has continually maintained that he had no part in the decision process and in fact recused himself……

Oh wait – here it is!

I had no role in making decisions regarding what to disclose about the specific financial terms of Maiden Lane II and Maiden Lane III, and payments to AIGs counterparties.

Uhhhhhhh Turbotax Timmy? How do you explain that?

    I have a feeling….
I have a feeling that in the State of the Union address tonight; one of Obama’s main platforms will be that of guilt. He will craftily use anecdotes aimed at the lowest common denominator to push the notion of self responsibility once again. He will try and GUILT the American public into pouring what is left of their life savings into the black hole that is their mortgage, no matter how illogical it may seem. This platform will obviously be used to try and stave off the pending doom of ARM resets and commercial collapse.
Watch and see my poor friends…. “The banks may have messed up, but it is OUR fault that we are in the situation that we are, and OUR responsibility to fix it, so don’t you dare default!”
What a load of BS we are fed once the American economy has reached its Zero Bound… All we have left is a bunch of liars scrambling and spewing whatever they can to stave the inevitable.

CFPA: why do we need a problematic new federal bureaucracy?

    http://reason.org/news/show/protecting-financial-consumers

    http://www.uschamber.com/publications/reports/090923_cfpa_sb.htm

Phil: the US Chamber of Commerce has this to say about Warren’s agency:

“In this economic analysis of the likely effect of the CFPA Act on small businesses, it is probable that if the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s CFPA Act of 2009 were enacted, it would have a significantly adverse effect on small businesses by restricting their access to credit. Some would lose access to credit altogether. The businesses that would be most adversely affected would be the new businesses for which consumer loan products are a principal source of funding. As a result, the CFPA Act would inflict the greatest harm on those small businesses that account for a significant portion of the economy’s net job growth. Fewer entrepreneurs would be able to start and expand their business. It does not go too far to suggest that the CFPA Act of 2009 could deny the credit that garage-based entrepreneurs need to create the next Apple® or Hewlett Packard®.”

Warren is not helping the middle class by eliminating credit lines to small business. Warren testified concerning the abs securitiztion market:

“Despite these larger concerns, it is noteworthy that even with the sharp contraction in the securitization market, consumer lending has shown only a modest decrease, with a projected annualized downturn of 3.5 percent. The contraction has been exclusively in revolving debt (such as credit cards), not in installment loans (such as automobile and student loans). There is
much discussion among finance professionals about the negative impact of the current contraction in the securitization market, but consumer loans do not seem to have been as strongly affected as mortgage loans…

Any reduction in consumer lending may be the result of reduced
demand as families try to cut costs or changes in banks’ lending decisions as they assess the deteriorating creditworthiness of American households.”

    http://cop.senate.gov/documents/cop-050709-report-execsummary.pdf

The rotten report is written up nicely by Housing Wire:

    http://www.housingwire.com/2009/06/02/viewpoint-the-cop-ralfs-on-talf/

“According to Warren, TALF is iffy and disappointing. The program, she says, raises two important questions: Is it well designed to help market participants meet the credit needs of households and businesses? And will it make a significant impact on access to credit for these sectors of the economy?

    Intelligent design?

With regard to design, there are “some reasons why investors would not want to participate,” she claims. First of all, the report asserts, there are restrictions on a borrower’s ability to sell the securities, “so that investors are ‘locked in’ to their investment for a number of years.”

I guess Warren and her compatriots did not check the TALF FAQs on the New York Fed’s website. Here, it clearly states (1) a TALF loan is prepayable (which would release the collateral) and (2) if the collateral is sold, the TALF loan can be transferred to an eligible borrower with prior consent of the Fed (until the program terminates, currently scheduled for the end of this year). Doesn’t sound very locked-in to me.

Another feature that would discourage borrowers, saith the COP, is that interest rates on TALF loans may be higher than investors can get from other lenders. This is either an urban myth, or a lie.

The TALF, like several other emergency liquidity programs conducted out of the New York Fed, was designed to substitute, temporarily, for customary private market financing mechanisms that have broken down and do not presently exist. Prior to the credit crunch, leveraged investors (like hedge funds, proprietary trading desks and so forth) typically financed their purchases of ABS in the repo (purchase-repurchase) market — also with haircuts, secured, no recourse, etc. but with margin calls and much shorter term, so borrowers compensated by continuously rolling over their repos. This source of funding from private dealers vanished with the credit crisis. As a result, the hedge and opportunity fund investors who once used leverage to reach their target returns on equity (ROE) have lowered their bids (substantially) to achieve the same yields outright.”

Why are we trusting Warren and a new regulatory agency when she ignores the securitization crisis for abs and pooh-poohs talf? These are the foxes in the henhouse brought to us by BarneyFrank and Obama.

yes, the congressman that asked the question caught the significance and asked again if Geithner signed off. Then he stated that he may have misinterpreted what G. said earlier.

  207. Oh yes, I did enjoy that.
But Geithner won’t get fired by anything illegal or incompetent he does; Geithner will only be gone when Obama realises the political cover/populism it will give him.

  214. The problem is some of the bought off politicans that were questioning him with soft ball questions. Those traitors will vote for him.

  215. I give him a couple of months. In one of the rants I sent to the White House last night, I told whoever the poor reader of White House mail is that if the President is really interested in bipartisanship, he should look to the public at large instead of looking to Republican politicians. Everybody left, right, and center in the public hates Geithner, Summers, and Bernacke, and thinks that they are all Wall Street toadies and crooks.

  216. Geithners going nowhere, Lynch can chew toffee all he likes, he should have called it as it is, Geithner your a thief, sling yer hook yer out on yer arse, anything else is a load of old tosh, Geithner can take this all day.
