  11. @ Youri – Households with children had a “food hardship” rate of 24.1 percent for 2009 compared with 14.9 percent among households without children. Twenty states had rates of 20 percent or higher. Seven Southern states led the list.

And we have Southern Republicans comparing people who rely on the government for food assistance–including kids who get free or reduced lunch at school–to stray animals who should have their food sources removed in order to prevent them from breeding.

Darn good book. The whole history, The naked history.

  14. No. George Soros is himself THE ULTMA MAJOR bubble. That big balloon filled with himself. Can somebody lend me a needle ? Geoge is THE HUMAN BUBBLE incarnate. Hopefully Soros master of the universe and the Milky Way will soon die. If it can happen to Henry Kissinger and a Rockerfeller it can happen to George. Is Geoge old ? Hope so.

  15. Has henry Kissinger died?

no sadly he is still alive.

  16. @ Dan Valley – LOL! Whatever administration official made that sneering little jab at Ron Paul is lucky that he’s NOT leading the GOP. Liberals like Ron Paul. In fact, Ron Paul is the ONLY GOP politician who has the guts to appear every once in a while on the Rachel Maddow show. Republicans are petrified of her because she’s so smart and politically sharp that she’d make them cry if they appeared on her show. Paul will go on, though. It’s funny how people with personal integrity can face any and all audiences simply because they have integrity and aren’t afraid of being exposed for their ignorance or hypocrisy.

What’s even funnier is that Obama had to twist the arms of Democrats to wrangle out votes for Bernacke. The majority of House dems want Geithner, Summers, and Bernacke gone, and many in the Senate share their contempt for that crew.

  17. Many people got to know about Howard Zinn as a result of their involvement with the 9/11 Truth movement, although I had read his landmark history of the US before I woke up and smelled the nanothermite. The term of art that many of us learned to apply to Mr. Zinn was “Left Gatekeeper”. This term applies to so-called leftists ranging from Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky to Michael Moore and the entire HuffPo site. A related term is “controlled opposition”.

The Left Wing complains about the Right Wing and vice versa, but the pundits dare not mention the Beast That Flys. Sadly, many of us will remember Mr. Zinn more for what he said in his last years about two of the most important historical events of our time and the people who actually give crap about what really happened, not for his American history book.

    Quoting Mr. Zinn:
“The truth is I don’t think anyone will ever really know what happened on 9/11 just as I don’t think anyone will really know who killed John F. Kennedy, and there are a lot of people who wasted a huge amount of time working on something that did not have any practical political significance.”

He was either shamefully ignorant, or a member of the controlled opposition. He was a full grown, college educated adult when JFK was killed. He had nearly half a century to do just a tiny bit of research on the coup d’etat that took place in Dallas on November 22, 1963.

    RIP? How can he?

I don’t think so. But Stacy seems to be touchy about me claiming that IPCC is a fraud. An opinion that continues to be supported by revelations as time goes by.

  59. frances snoot

    @Stacey:
Do you think IPCC is a fraud?

  60. Zbigniew Brzezinski

    Former National Security Adviser

I think Obama’s greatest moment was his speech rejecting the “war on terror” as an excessive and dangerous way of responding to the kind of terrorism that has been directed at the United States, because it was increasingly pitting the United States against the entire Islamic world. I think that was a wise course of action, I think it was a wise speech, I thought it was a wise redefinition of America’s foreign policy. And the disappointment doesn’t come with a single moment. I think it comes with the fact that his efforts to get the healthcare plan adopted have consumed so much of his time that he has slowed down his efforts to change American foreign policy.

  61. @DannII

IPCC is A MASSIVE FRAUD indeed. Can’t do anything about that. Science is like that. It’s either TRUE, or it’s FALSE. The proof is in the pudding. And again you greenies, which I like, look in the sky !

It’s about the sun. Astrophysics 101. Sorry. It’s not because you are green that you have to continue being dumb. Science has its rules. The simplistic theory about CO2 and human acrivity doesn’t hold.

Soo please let’s talk about something else more serious like: oil depletion, natural ressources depletion, bad economic and ecologic development. But please !

Don’t insult our intelligence because your global warming science is tainted with humongous financial conflits of interests and shoddy and fraudulent data.

  62. @Marc

I agree. Lets focus on real solutions to cleaning the earth, not lining the pockets of shysters. IPCC is sheer speculation, not science. They have been repeatedly shown to have falsified documents to make their case. They are not trustworthy.

While we are at it, lets do real, un-politicized science.

  63. Howard Zinn

    Historian

I’ ve been searching hard for a highlight. The only thing that comes close is some of Obama’s rhetoric; I don’t see any kind of a highlight in his actions and policies.

As far as disappointments, I wasn’t terribly disappointed because I didn’t expect that much. I expected him to be a traditional Democratic president. On foreign policy, that’s hardly any different from a Republican–as nationalist, expansionist, imperial and warlike. So in that sense, there’s no expectation and no disappointment. On domestic policy, traditionally Democratic presidents are more reformist, closer to the labor movement, more willing to pass legislation on behalf of ordinary people–and that’s been true of Obama. But Democratic reforms have also been limited, cautious. Obama’s no exception. On healthcare, for example, he starts out with a compromise, and when you start out with a compromise, you end with a compromise of a compromise, which is where we are now.

I thought that in the area of constitutional rights he would be better than he has been. That’s the greatest disappointment, because Obama went to Harvard Law School and is presumably dedicated to constitutional rights. But he becomes president, and he’s not making any significant step away from Bush policies. Sure, he keeps talking about closing Guantánamo, but he still treats the prisoners there as “suspected terrorists.” They have not been tried and have not been found guilty. So when Obama proposes taking people out of Guantánamo and putting them into other prisons, he’s not advancing the cause of constitutional rights very far. And then he’s gone into court arguing for preventive detention, and he’s continued the policy of sending suspects to countries where they very well may be tortured.

I think people are dazzled by Obama’s rhetoric, and that people ought to begin to understand that Obama is going to be a mediocre president–which means, in our time, a dangerous president–unless there is some national movement to push him in a better direction.

  75. The Underfundedmentalist

Populism is neither left nor right, it is functioning democracy in action. Zinn had an agenda, sure, most thinking people do.
But the ‘enlightened west’ has been so steeped in ‘anti-communism’ (which in practice has proven to be no different from pro-communism) that the popular will is now considered subversive. At the turn of the last century an 8 hr work day, the right for workers to organize, ending company script, child labor laws, renter rights, a minimum wage, and the anti-draft movement were just some of the popular issues of the day, today american idol is a popular issue. Popular issues were replaced with modern convenience thanks to edward bernays and his ’39 world fair.

    I just started tuning in,

  77. @mommy

The bet is not that IPCC is a fraud, we already know that, as it has been demonstrate on numerous occasions – mix in some real science (to provide legitimacy) with fraudulent science (that which one wants want to prove) and call the results alarming.

The bet is: As of the day you started this nonsense, there was no proof that man drives the climate over and above natural forces.

How do we prove that? I don’t know and I don’t care. You want me to put some skin in the game. This was your idea. You initiated the proposal. So you, as the initiator of this wager, must make a proposal on how to determine who is correct and what the wager is. You sound like a child who cries: “oh yeah, wanna make a bet.”

You have diarrhea of the mouth and constipation of the brain. All talk and no action. All bark and no bite. You can’t get past GO. Your transmission is stuck in neutral.

  80. This quote from Howard Zinn brought to mind exactly your recent guest Bruce Levine relating to how to transcend the depression caused living in a traumatic society.

“Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can quietly become a
power no government can suppress, a power that can transform the world.
Even when we don’t ‘win’ there is fun and fulfillment in the fact we
    have been involved.”

  81. Howard Zinn
“Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can quietly become a power no government can suppress, a power that can transform the world.Even when we don’t ‘win’ there is fun and fulfillment in the fact we have been involved.”

  82. @Braseal,

Yes, I agree. I just got the book and it was an homage to Warren Buffet.

There’s a huge disconnect between the book and the interviews and also Max’s hammering (rightfully so) of Buffet in regard to investing in Israel and the wars that Israel is waging against Lebanon. Very odd.

I’m going to finish the book, I think. But I’m very disappointed in it.

  83. Nomi Pintz’s book is a better book to promote.

  84. @Naomi

    I read Janet’s Buffett book, too…
It is definitely a pump for Buffett,
    HOWEVER,
there are points of good advice in regards to investing, as well as a fairly descriptive breakdown of the derivatives disaster…
So if you ignore the pump, you may garner some use from the words therein…

  85. “CREDIT-TERRORIST” story in Dallas Observer: “It’s like discovering fire…”

    http://www.dallasobserver.com/content/printVersion/1653972

“While most Americans with unpaid bills dread the collector’s call, Cunningham sees them as lucrative opportunities. Many collection and credit card companies, intentionally or not, violate little-known consumer rights laws, and Cunningham’s favorite pastime is catching them doing so and then suing them. In fact, it’s a profitable side job.”

“[...] Cunningham calls himself a private attorney general—someone who files private lawsuits in the public interest. Debt collectors call him a credit terrorist.”

“[...] Cunningham knew he had a good enough case to file a lawsuit against the debt collection agency, and for his first lawsuit, he decided to enlist the help of a lawyer. Two months later, he had a check in his hand for $1,000.

“It’s like discovering fire,” says Cunningham, thumbing through the stack of lawsuit papers on his table.”
