Seriously, take a look at the GAVI financials. The organization looks overfunded. They have issued high-interest, short-term debt paper. Their cash interest payouts are massive considering that there is not an apparent need for the debt issuance in the first place. They have over $1b in an investment portfolio under management by a wing of the World Bank. The whole thing looks like a tax-exempt fund of funds that does its banking directly with the World Bank while parading as a charitable foundation. A additional $10b (IMO) is not a contribution, but a tax deductible injection into a a tax-exempt hedge fund.

Thanks for posting the GAVI financials. No kidding they have a burn rate. To my untrained eye, it looks like they have set up a money fountain. They are raking in donations,(including approx $70,000,000/year characterized as “federal award”), and are tax-exempt as a 501c3. In the meantime, they are issuing bonds and paying almost 10% on the ones of less than one year duration. Why do they need to issue bonds? More importantly, who holds those bonds? They are taking in approx $70mm/annum for “federal award” and spitting out $50mm in 2007 then $60mm in 2008 as cash payments for interest.

Are they laundering money? Dunno.

Interesting to note that during the two reporting periods, GAVI got out of all $90mm+ of their Treasury and agency paper.

What I was really looking for was a story from a few years ago during which there was a rebuttal and discussion re mosquito netting and other cheap measures that could accomplish the same ends without the unknown risk and obviously greater cost of vaccines. The interviewee expressed displeasure and mistrust of the trials to be conducted on African infants and children. Here is a link that includes information along those lines. show over $1.2BILLION used for investments… like Swaps, Money-market funds, etc….
Their management has one helluva BURN RATE as well…

So if you like playing with other people’s money, GAVI is a great place to be…
