I will remind the readers that it has been a sovereign country (and occasionally, empire) for over 2,500 years. Iraq was a post WWI construction, and Afghanistan has never had a real cohesive government. I would not underestimate a reaction from them if they were to be attacked or backed into a corner. They have been playing politics for a very long time, Islamic Republic or not. I have actually lived in Iran, and will agree with Marc (a rare thing), that given the choice between having to live many of the countries in the area, or in Iran, I would chose Iran. It has a thriving culture, good food, and is not nearly as repressive as such places as Saudi Arabia.
