@Stacy: curious comments about driving in russia. I always thought that our drivers are particularly disrespectful of pedestrians. My experience is that they never stop to let you cross the street, even if the light is green. Maybe only New York’s drivers can be compared in their despise of pedestrians. As to why people don’t shout at you for double parking, my guess is that you never know who is that other guy – people just don’t want to get in trouble. What if he has fsb ID card or something, = higher social status than you.

Stacey, interesting comments on driving in Russia. Reminds me of how different driving is in Pittsburgh PA vs NYC area. In NYC area all you need is a lead foot, gas pedal and middle finger. Pittsburgh on the other hand… drivers are noticably friendly. They have the “Pittsburgh left” which is when the light turns green the opposing car waves you to make a left turn in front of thier right of way. Very odd, but happens all the time.

Don’t know if you folks ever read The Exile? Mark Ames could tell you about the Russians. On the new Exile site he has an article somewhere about how Russians love crazy as in insanely brave, aggressive, dangerous. You don’t bug Russians because in a honor based social system (rather than one based on law) to cause someone to lose face is to tempt death. (I read an article today about Karoake bars in the Philippines.. it’s bad dangerous to mock some fellow’s singing in the Philippines.. another honor based culture. One is apt to get shanked.) Ask Ames. His satirical newspaper, the Exile, was not a happy experience for him. He fled Russia ahead of the assassins and went to hide out in Panama! (Incidently, Ames went to Russia and set up the Exile with now famous Matt Taibbi (sp?).. who is 1/2 Philippino.)

Don’t feel so bad, I did take to the streets in protest before the ’91 invasion of Iraq, and again in ’03, (it’s not considered radical to do so in SF)seemingly for naught. I feel the wars were going to happen regardless of who was selected to be president or prime minister. The fact that their lies are catching up to them is a good sign. Freedom demands vigilance of the morally conscious. At least you seem to have a national memory in the UK, we are sorley lacking in that department here in the united states of amnesia. They will corral the ‘piigs’ in ghettos, er green cities. and split the spoils among the rich jetting elite beneficiaries.
It is NOT a matter of who pays the debt: the debt is being used to colonize the nation for the EU. The tie-in between Greece and Iceland is the application of the Finance minister’s signatory authority on the whole package. Iceland’s referendum does not free Iceland from debt at all. It only mitigates the payments over time.
@snoot – I think the Greek issue comes down to whether the Greek population has to pay the debts through ‘austerity’ measures or would the German population have to pay with their savings; Iceland should refuse to pay the private debts of the three banks nor should they pay the UK as they were complicit in the crime
I also think the Greek story is more similar to California; will the US federal government ‘bailout’ California? Will citizens of other US states complain when they do? And, if not, who will bailout California? Or will it just default on its bonds? Will the federal govt allow them to do that? What would happen to the dollar in that situation?

@snoot – the causes of the respective debt crises of Iceland and Greece were entirely different; the Greek debt crisis is mostly caused by government spending on pensions and other government services tied with a very uncompetitive economy (much to do with having the euro); whereas Iceland’s debt crisis is/was financial and caused by a massive, fast burning Ponzi scheme operated by the three big banks there who were able to loan out 10 times GDP laundered via London; Greece, Portugal and Italy have been like this for decades and always used to devalue their currencies as a way out; that this is no longer an option for them will lead to unrest there no doubt . . . whereas many Icelanders are now trying to get into the euro; and yes, 3% is arbitrary

How is Moscow International Airport now? It wasn’t that good 4-5 years ago I was there four time and it was really very hard to wait there cause it was very small place and very few chairs to sit on so most of people had to sit on the floor to catch their next flight. A great disconnect exists in the gold market between the exchange futures contract price (the paper price) and the gold bullion paid price for transactions (the physical price). The differential in price is growing wider, enough to place tremendous pressure on the gold market itself. Look not to the gold premium paid for purchases, but to high volume purchases in the tens of million$. In mid-December, almost every demand for gold contract delivery was matched by a cash delivery, complete with 25% bonus premium offered. The officials even produced a new ledger item called ‘Cash For Delivery’ that was necessary to balance their badgered books. It prompted little attention. Some call it a basic bribe. I remember travelling through Germany at night and looking at the concentration of lights in populated areas … and thinking about how fragile and exposed the infrastructure would be to a sudden stop in energy deliveries, followed by food shortages of course.
A few months ago, MSM German TV gave a short Doc. at ca. midnight telling everyone that Germany has stsockpiles of grains and oil that would suffice for ca. 3 months.

@Mep, the abiltiy of the parent to contain the childs frustration at learning is paramount. For example when a child is doing a jigsaw, they may say that they are bored, what this can mean is that they can longer tolerate thinking, so what can we do, we can complete the jigsaw for the child (not the best response) or we can assist the child do it with them (help it bear learning, the preferable way), as parents we help contain children from the overwhelming experience of life. I have found with my 3 kids that they thrive on a tough love regime. They go to bed at a regular time with a night time ritual (brushing teeth, mum sings them a good night song), I read books to them, JIGSAWS my god jigsaws what a great thing to do with kids I cannot emphasise the developmental importance of jigsaws to a childs development. Kids are naturally curious, your constantly saying no to them, no don’t put your finger there and so on. They need love and stability, it pains me to see good people fuck up their kids by giving them what the adult thiks they need as opposed to what the child needs.

As I cannot find the post , I’ll try and explain again FWIW :
I had a few car crashes when I was young, and in each case, “time” seemed to pass in VERY slow motion.
A little like watching a film in slow motion. This is because the brain speeds up during the crisis; or
in other words, our “concentration” increases immensely.
I always had the same experience during squash matches and tournaments – when retrieving the ball out of
the back corners … a highly precise action that requires immense concentration.
In order to do this properly and conistently, the brain speeds up such that I literally can see the ball
in slow motion = absolute concentration.
**** Small squash explanation …
A squash ball going into the back corner is invariably what we call a “perfect length”, whereby the ball
literally rolls along the side wall and sticks to it like glue, even after bouncing off the back wall.
To get “into the corner with the raquet” is a technique which requires two actions :
a) the standard squash stroke
b) moving your right should quickly in-and-out of the corner
The overall effect is that the raquet “trail” takes on a hyperbolic or elliptocal shape, whereby at the
“tip” of the ellipse, your raquet-head should now be just “millimeters” away from the corner-walls.
Once the raquet is tightly in the corner, you are then moving “out” with your shoulder, and taking the
ball with you !

With all the under developped mining deposits in Magadan and Eastern Siberia you should float the idea to your russian economist. The rubbble should be back by a small amount of convertible gold. The best way would let’s say guarantee that 1 rouble woul ge backed and convertible by a guaranteed 1/100,000 of gram of siberian gold. This solid as gold guarantee would be quite sufficient to stop the stupid habit by Russians to deal in US dollars. Just a small amount would suffice to cut the crap with the US dollar.
