but; is it possible that the credit default swap scam was the only way to take countries like Iceland (that were intelligent and economically sound enough not to need IMF loans ) and break them into the fold by the credit bubble?

@Youri-links — yeah… I’m not sure its fair to say that the IPCC guys are “not scientists” — I think many of them have been put under a lot of pressure to come up with the “correct” results, have taken the debate with skeptics quite personally, and have compromised their scientific ideals as a result… IMO they should still be a part of a more inclusive and open scientific project to understand the planet’s climate. (Very unlikely!)

@Mother — well, I think the “fossil fuel” industry is playing both sides, and “sensibly” (at least before the recent scandals) wanted to back the obvious “winners” of the AGW PR battle.
But the second part of that — “haters of government” — I’d agree has a strong influence. Fear of the NWO, binding intergovernmental treaties, carbon profiteers, etc. To me, the closed-off nature of the process seems a bit off… members of the IPCC are put forward by governments; research institutions receive their funding from governments; non-establishment researchers are shut out, denigrated in MSM, denied access to data, etc. To me, there’s an obvious conflict of interest here which goes far beyond the influence of the oil companies, who I think are just hedging their bets.
But rather than speculate on the degree and origins of PR manipulations, I’d prefer Climate Change articles to talk about the scientific process and the details of the specific scandals… I mean, I originally believed that AR4 was properly peer-reviewed, that surface temp data is collected in a careful way, that the models and simulations were somewhat useful, and generally that the establishment scientists were serious idealistic people at the top of their games, and above the “politics of solutions”… From looking at some of these scandals with an open mind, it seems to me that there’s been some manipulation of data (and processes) to work towards pre-arranged conclusions that the warming trend is entirely about C02, that this sort of warming is unprecedented (not so), and that these conclusions are firm and accepted amongst the majority of the wider climate-science community… which is the big lie here: that “the debate is over” and “the science settled”…
…So yeah, this bothers me a lot, especially when people liken skeptics and truth-seekers to holocaust deniers, abortion-doctor murderers, or oil lobbyists… it doesn’t make for a healthy debate, and it seems a bit childish. (Stacy!) So, Mother, if I’ve been rude to you here in the past, it’s because of this.
