The only thing farmers want is to sell futures of their produce. If they could do that (you get 10% to sell on the market in one year time) that would solve their problems. That is not speculation imho but simple investment.
I airlines where made more dependend on fossil fuel volatility they might wean themselves of it in favour of algae based fuels (which the pentagon now says it has ready). How much money is wasted that could be spend more durably on building this capacity. is unbelievable..All to give Bandar an ego the size of Manhattan..
Speculation in physical terms (putting oil in a tanker at sea) is extracting real economical goods (and services in case of for example a silencing contract for an entertainer) from the economy without needing its use. That means you deprive others from its benefits in order to exploit their need. This is simply antisocial behaviour, should not be allowed.
Regarding contracts It is simply not a prudent use of an exchange medium (money ) that it may be extracted for no reason of economic performance whatsoever. I would say it is not part of its use policy to be handed over for that reason. We see how it creates difficulties for people that use money in the way it was intended..

I liked your spec vs saver analysis, but I have a different view. Speculators have skewed the rules of the game so far in their favor, it’s not even a competition anymore. The doctor, mechanic, physicist or any other “worker”/saver usually focus on work and family and life. The speculator focuses on how to turn a big pile of money into a mountain of money. In the process,the speculator rewrote the rules and bought off the referees.
The savers were under the incorrect assumption that they had elected representatives who would look out after their interests and keep things above board and fair for all of us. This may be a naive view, but it did help keep in check the exorbitant abuses we see today.
It is easy to steal money. It is difficult to get away with it. Speculators have figured out how to steal and stay out of jail. These crooks would be in prison today if William Black had the authority he did during the Savings and Loan crises.

This is the inherent problem with debt based money. The supply must constantly increase to service the previous debt. This is not sustainable. The supply would go to infinity eventually.
That’s why I favor gold and silver backed money. The money itself has value. It is not necessary to earn interest because the supply can not be artificially inflated. Also, a speculator might think twice about risking something of value.

I agree that savers would like to see a return. I have no problem with that with this caveat – savings accounts would no longer be insured. I’d like to ammend the no insurance to savings: any insured accounts would not be backed up by taxpayers. The insurance must reflect the risk as well. Insurance must be a private party transaction, without government being one of the parties. AIG for example.

No usury. It’s a fine idea, but why would anyone risk their savings if there is only a downside? The only way this could work is if the loan were fully collateralized. Even then, you take away access to your money for a period of time. How would this work? To promote sustainable growth by lending without interest AND give people an incentive to loan their savings?

Although I don’t disagree with the linked URL at all, in the US — and maybe UK — there is still the possibility of government confiscating physical Gold.
Paper Gold, Silver, … Copper etc … should not be acquired in the first place given the global economic conditions. This kind of paper instrument needs to be phased out globally in the next 2 years to clarify this long standing paper vs physical problem.
Silver, I am not so worried about — and Platinum and Palladium are obscure enough to maybe avoid this confiscation problem.
There has been a long standing problem in the Anglosphere of government confiscating people’s assets because the the government does not agree with how they were acquired.
This confiscation instinct — at its worse in the US and UK — should be leading to a massive money and talent flight the likes that have never been seen before.
