[Sunday Video Club] Under the Bridge

Stacy Summary: For those looking for a reprieve from markets, finance, scandal, here is a video you might enjoy. I just heard the song on the radio in the cafe. This song came out when I was living in LA and it brings back powerful memories of a strange place.

Any one remember “Chilly WIlly and the Red Hot Peppers” ?

They were around in the early 70′s in the same period as Police !

Also played at my local , the “Hope and Anchor” in Islington ( as did Police ) !

    HAPPY PI DAY:
March 14th (3.14) is today and all around the world mathematicians are celebrating this compelling and mysterious constant of Nature. Pi appears in equations describing the orbits of planets, the colors of auroras, the structure of DNA. It’s everywhere.

    @urbanherbalist … Pi

How to calculate Pi .. without a computer :

#1 get hold of a Chess Board

#2 Find a Needle which is the same length as the “little” Chess-square-Sides

#3 Drop the Needle from any height

#4 count the number of times the Needle lands “across” a ‘box-Line’

#5 count the number of times the Needle lands “perfectly inside” any box

    The ratio of #5 to #4 …. is Pi / 4 .

The longer you do this, the more accurate you will be able to calculate Pi !

  12. As the cultural capitol, LA was a strange place in 1991. Liberation from the shitty 1980′s Hollywood culture was achieved, the film industry was held in contempt by film buffs, the indy film industry was just beginning to get attention, the AIDS hysteria was lessening but not gone, and “liberal” LA media people hoped a Democrat would save them from Reagan’s legacy. Little did they know Clinton and the bankers would screw everyone anew.

I once spend a week at Venice Beach LA (early 90′s), on a contract based research trip..I found this music so fitting for that place.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKbPUzhWeeI It was also what they played in the hippie hangouts boarding the Red Sea (where everybody was either stoned, having the bends, suffering heatstroke or any combination of the before)..It was also what was played during a nightly leg in a Thai touringcar doing needle bends though the mountain jungle with a drugged up driver stiff as a board from a mix of caffeine and nicotine…

  19. @ frances – Good for Bill Maher! BTW: he’s absolutely right about parental involvement and about the presence of books in the home.

For poor kids with single moms who have 2-3 jobs and can’t spend a lot of time with them, seems that the trick is finding other responsible adults who value education and value the dignity of kids to spend quality time with those kids while parents are away working. Teachers can’t do that, no matter how many extra hours a district tries to tag onto a school day. The solution to poverty and lack of adult supervision is absolutely not to destroy one of the only other adult-child relationships kids have by firing all of their teachers and/or destroying the community more by gutting and shuttering schools.

  25. @Mep – yes, I watched that episode of Democracy Now about the new Jim Crow; I thought it made a lot of sense and I recall vividly when Reagan introduced the War on Drugs with not very subtle racist slogans and ad campaigns; the War on Drugs was introduced at the same time that working class jobs were sent overseas and the WoD seems to have been part of some way of appeasing those losing their well paying jobs; and I think of my highschool where there were about 1200 students and all the hundreds of people I knew at UCLA and in LA; most white, a majority using at least one illegal drug (on a regular, if not daily, basis) and yet I don’t know one single person that has been arrested on drug charges; I’m sure if most of them were black I would know at least a handful that had been arrested in the WoD

That must mean Europe is being extorted doesn’t it?

  33. @ Stacy – Yep, pretty wrong, isn’t it? I guess I don’t know many white or black acquaintances who have been arrested on drug charges( although almost all of the white people I know at the very least smoke pot . . . can’t say the same for the black people I know); however, most black people I know have had run-ins with the law. Most of it is driving-while black kinda stuff like getting caught talking on a cell phone w/o a wireless earpiece or something (ticket = $250). But it’s a shame how we lock people away. If 5 or more cop cars sat around my neighborhood day in and day out, I’m sure they’d find people doing things that they shouldn’t be doing. They could probably shake down some of the white teenagers in the area, too, and come up with at least some prescription drugs that don’t belong to them! But cops are rarely around here. Drive down 5 or so blocks into the city, though, and that’s all you see. Cop cars just sitting around waiting to scoop some kid up.

    Money for nuthin

…Defenders of capitalism claim that there can be no real economy, no real material value created by the real people on Main Street, without the financing of Wall Street’s virtual economy. Allegedly, they are so intertwined as to be the same thing, which they are, and that no other way of doings things is possible, which is patently untrue. The storyline goes that without virtual economy financing from Wall Street, without the ever-expanding debt that drives the quest for limitless growth, the world would end. So strong is this hallucination that capitalist theoreticians such as Guy Sorman say, “even in this time of financial crisis, the global benefits of the new financial markets have surpassed their costs.”…

  41. I met up with Michael Moore a few years ago at Cannes when “Bowling for Columbine” was playing – and I tried to break down what the banks were doing – and that he should focus on the banks as the head of the nile river that feeds all the corruption . . .but he clearly did not ‘get it.’ and based on this screed on HuffPost, clearly he’s still unable to grasp what’s going on

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/michael-moore/sell-buy-rebel-capitalism_b_491254.html

Look, every time a film like one of Moore’s comes out – the companies he’s attacking just buy more insurance and lower operating standards to pay for it – actually making the situation worse.

If you are not willing to attack the folks at the top – than you are just making life for the people in the middle like the car industry, or the health industry, the weapons industry, etc. much easier by doing the ‘due diligence’ for them.

Even “Capitalism A Love Story” I consider to be quite bland compared to, let’s say, ‘The Corporation” or any of the films we’ve made for Al Jaz – or even our TV shows!

Our TV shows are communicating the seriousness of what is going on while folks like moore and bill mahr kind of slide by – waiting for some sensationalism to come by and make some quick jokes about.

Could urban gardens supply 1/3 of all food for a city ? Yes.

In 1929 my grandma and grandpa survived the crisis without problems because of an urban garden. Prediction. We will soon see a lot of abandoned plots of land at the outskirts of the cities cultivated.

    http://www.oftwominds.com/blog.html

In the baltic states, Latvia recently gave some land to the poor unemployed to allow them to eat. Yeah it’s that bad. And it’s coming to the USA. Take a good gardening course and try to find a small plot of land. One acre is sufficient for a family of four.

I don’t ever want to feel like this again in my life either thanks to all the corruption and amorality brought on by the banksters which has filtered down to main street. So many $#@!s out there these days they make me sick.

I know some people are aware and before they were allot less aware but still the seriousness of things is still not catching on.

I don’t think people believe that there will be hyperinflation or whipped out or anything bad at all. Its like going and talking to someone 10min before the tsunami wave hits the beach. Dont drink your gin and tonic you will be under water in 20 min.. ye ye man what ever … i did my best

the point is: any Beatles fans out there – after 40 years – the entire catalog has been meticulously, digitally remastered on CD: Sept 2009. I recently purchased a few of these CDs. Listening to them on a good sound system is absolutely terrific. (compressed internet streaming – 128 kbps or less, vs 1600 kbps of a CD – is only an approximation of the true sound fidelity)

  58. MAX – for american at least we have a Moore and Maher. i remember maher’s first show politically incorrect on ABC? got busted for that one. now HBO has some balls. we aren’t free in the USA anymore, media slaughter. man he woke my arse up back then and continues to do so for others. i am not going to diss the instigators. for this brokedick country they are a start. he has to play in order to stay. moore may have conflicts but he is a large spokesman, let’s give him some credit.

  59. @ gb – I like both Moore and Maher, and also agree w/ Max.

Maher could’ve took the opportunity to comment on Obama’s (and Ed. Sec. Arne Duncan’s) support of the mass firing of the teachers in RI, or at the very least, could’ve railed against the system a little. Instead, he took the easy way out by blaming the parents–who are most likely poor. I agree that parents need to step it up, too, but the unavoidable truth of the matter is that some simply cannot.

  60. @Y’all

The lyrics (and song) to Ozzy Osbornes Crazy Train is epic in regards to current events. Just read (and listen). Interesting parts are emphasized in bold.

All aboard! Ha ha ha ha ha ha haaaa!

Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay

Crazy, but that’s how it goes
Millions of people living as foes
    Maybe it’s not too late
    To learn how to love
    And forget how to hate

    Mental wounds not healing
    Life’s a bitter shame
I’m going off the rails on a crazy train
I’m going off the rails on a crazy train

    Let’s Go!

    I’ve listened to preachers
    I’ve listened to fools
    I’ve watched all the dropouts
    Who make their own rules
One person conditioned to rule and control
The media sells it and you live the role

    Mental wounds still screaming
    Driving me insane
I’m going off the rails on a crazy train
I’m going off the rails on a crazy train

I know that things are going wrong for me
You gotta listen to my words
    Yeah

    Heirs of a cold war
    That’s what we’ve become
    Inheriting troubles I’m mentally numb
    Crazy, I just cannot bear
I’m living with something’ that just isn’t fair

    Mental wounds not healing
    Who and what’s to blame
I’m going off the rails on a crazy train
I’m going off the rails on a crazy train

  64. Bill Mahrer doesen’t have kids of his own.

Most people without kids agrees with him, most people who have, don’t.
I used to belive this nonsense before I had kids too.

My two kids grew up whith plenty of books, and I used to read a lot for them. But only books I liked my self . When they were 12 and 9 I read Lord of the Rings after finishing my favourite “Watership Down”. They read litterature in foreign languages in their early teens. They claim – and I believe them, they didn’t learn anything useful at school.

When I come to think about it – neither did I. I did some sociology and economics classes at my local university a couple of years back – the only thing i got from it, were the notion “this doesen’t add up”.

So I started to educate myself (in collaboration with my kids), and here I am.

  80. A slightly different take on China/US from Ambrose

“China has succumbed to hubris. It has mistaken the soft diplomacy of Barack Obama for weakness, mistaken the US credit crisis for decline, and mistaken its own mercantilist bubble for ascendancy. There are echoes of Anglo-German spats before the First World War, when Wilhelmine Berlin so badly misjudged the strategic balance of power and over-played its hand.”

  88. I have mixed feelings about Moore and Maher.

However tune into the only show critical of the the powers that be after 911.

The Phil Donahue show on MSNBC

    From Wikipedia

“In July 2002, Phil Donahue returned to television to host a show called Donahue on MSNBC. On February 25, 2003, MSNBC canceled the show, citing low viewership. According to the New York Times despite being heavily promoted by MSNBC and having a debuting audience of 660,000 only three weeks into the show, viewership had fallen to 393,000 viewers.[6]. By then end of 2002, Donahue’s audience was down to 379,000.[7] Although his ratings were less than 1/6th Bill O’Reilly, who shared the same time slot, Donahue was the highest rated show on MSNBC at the time it was canceled, managing to beat out Chris Matthews’ “Hardball” in the ratings.[8] Soon after the show’s cancellation AllYourTV.com reported it had received a copy of an internal NBC memo that stated Donahue should be fired because he would be a “difficult public face for NBC in a time of war”"

So if Moore and Maher play softball it is understandable.

MR. ANGELL. Let me run this by again. You mean a country owns gold and has it stored in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and if they ship it out, that’s an export?

MR. TRUMAN. And in the balance of payments accounts it also counts as an import, so it washes out.

CHAIRMAN GREENSPAN. The Federal Reserve Bank’s basement is a foreign country. When they move it out of the basement into the United States, it’s an import. Then, when they ship it out again, it’s an export.

    MR. ANGELL. That makes sense!

MR. TRUMAN. And sometimes when they sell the gold, it might be sold into the United States, so it should count as an import. It doesn’t necessarily always show up as an export.

MR. BOEHNE. That really clarifies it!

MR. KELLEY. Does it have to get out of your vault at all in order to be considered an import and an export?

VICE CHAIRMAN CORRIGAN. Well, I’m not even going to try to answer that. In this particular case I know what happened, so I think. …

    Its truly horrible.

“The Soviet Story” is a story of an Allied power, which helped the Nazis to fight Jews and which slaughtered its own people on an industrial scale. Assisted by the West, this power triumphed on May 9th, 1945. Its crimes were made taboo, and the complete story of Europe’s most murderous regime has never been told. Until now…

To snuff out and kill the Creature from Jekyll Island we must have a repetition of many more Icelands.

Iceland is the most important country presently. You just need a couple of Iceland and all the structure of exploitation and opression goes up in flame. It’s not a dream. It’s possible. Why ? Because about HALF of Europe is bankrupt. We have to export a real revoluion against these Nazis banksters. They feed themselve on ignorance. Once people understanf that they are stark naked, you can kill the vampire easily with referendums. Greece is ripe for an icelandic revolt. Ireland too.

I was listening to Bob Chapman last week and he says that the only way Americans can take back their country is remove everyone in power during the November elections. 112. Nice song Stacy. Thanks.

  113. “In the absence of the gold standard, there is no way to protect savings from confiscation through inflation. There is no safe store of value. If there were, the government would have to make its holding illegal, as was done in the case of gold. If everyone decided, for example, to convert all his bank deposits to silver or copper or any other good, and thereafter declined to accept checks as payment for goods, bank deposits would lose their purchasing power and government-created bank credit would be worthless as a claim on goods. The financial policy of the welfare state requires that there be no way for the owners of wealth to protect themselves.

“This is the shabby secret of the welfare statists’ tirades against gold. Deficit spending is simply a scheme for the confiscation of wealth. Gold stands in the way of this insidious process. It stands as a protector of property rights. If one grasps this, one has no difficulty in understanding the statists’ antagonism toward the gold standard.”

But it just seemed interesting that Paulson and Soros did HUGE deals @$5.50 a share with Novagold… considering that the price of the stock is now $7.40
that stock will probably go to $9+ in the short term…

There is plenty of gas for sure in Alaska and oil too but there seems to be enough gas everywhere. And if you can use the gas for mining energy close to the source makes the gas even cheaper and with use of enough gas energy a deal can be made. If gas prizes could be kept low it’s a cheap burner also for cars.

Still wondering how this could tie in with Sarah Palin.

Does anybody wanna buy the State of California Department of Justice Building at 4949 Broadway, Sacramento?

The other day Max was talking about Goldman buying the Acropolis.

Now, Goldman Sachs can just buy the entire Department of Justice in California.

What a joke this state is!

  127. California Doctor

    Oh I am sooo sorry…

There is actually a REAL ESTATE portfolio of Commercial Real Estate that the State of California is trying to dump.

    http://www.cbre.com/USA/US/CA/San+Diego+Central/Property/goldenstateportfolio

Since the State government itself is trying to dump these commercial real estate buildings, should we assume that the buildings really are worthless?

I mean, if the state is going bankrupt, if you’re the dumbass who buys these “office parks” filled with these bankrupt state agencies, why should you be exposed to the risk of Meg Whitman withdrawing funding to all these welfare departments?

The core of the proposals, presented by the European Commission last April, is that EU-based fund managers should register and disclose their activities to permit more transparency and minimise threats to the stability of the financial system.

Tim Geithner, the US Treasury secretary, sent a letter two weeks ago to Michel Barnier, the EU internal market commissioner, in which he warned that the draft law would discriminate against US firms by denying them access to the European market.

  131. Hi Max and Stacy:

This is gonna crack you up. My four cousins trade Oil,Pork and Soy Beans in Beijing and Shanghai China and listen to you. They think your really a riot. Three of them have Doctorates in economics and One has a Masters in mathematics. They were really bored teaching. The biggest lie is that the Chinese government censors everything. They have no problems getting you or France24 and BBC. The PRC government only starts giving you shit if and when ANYONE starts talking about overthrowing the government or democratic regime change. It’s really safe in Beijing and Shanghai. It’s ironic many Chinese were shorting the Shanghai Composite Index thru their brokerage affliate branches in Hong Kong and lost enormous amounts when the market surged higher with the PRC Stimulus Package. You should visit Asia and do you broadcast from there. It’ll shock your listeners.
Anyway just wanted to say they think your very brave for openly criticizing the United States and the U.K.

  132. Max Keiser on the Greek Crisis (with Greek subtitles)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbH1JsOTInk

  133. Max,
I often feel that financial commentators fail to take into account in their analyses and predictions the very real risk of war as erstwhile great economic powers decline and others move take their place. Isn’t this likely in the near future as the USA tumbles inexorably into being yet another banana republic, the Eu breaks up and an increasingly arrogant China presses it’s claims on Taiwan and seeks revenge on Japan for the humiliations and cruelty it suffered during WW2? For many years Japan kept the majority if its armed forces in the North to counter a perceived threat from Russia but recently they moved them South to face China – both countries are, of course, hungry for energy resources and are exploring for oil in the South China Sea. The last time the world got into a comparable economic mess, in the 1930s, the problems were only resolved by WW2 – the machinations and make-work projects of politicians and the posturing of economists was largely in vain.

    Kind regards,

    Richard

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_Plan_Red
“War Plan Red, also known as the Atlantic Strategic War Plan, was a plan for the United States to make war with Great Britain (the “Red” forces). It was developed by the United States Army during the mid 1920s, approved in May 1930 by the Secretary of War and the Secretary of Navy, updated in 1934-35, and officially withdrawn in 1939, following the outbreak of the Second World War, when it and others like it were replaced by the five “Rainbow” plans created to deal with the Axis threat. However, it was not declassified until 1974.

The war was intended to be a continental war, waged primarily on North American territory between the United States and the British Empire. The assumption was that Canada would represent the ideal geographic forum through which the United States could wage war against the British.”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_color-coded_war_plans
    United States color-coded war plans
“During the 1920s and 1930s, the United States military developed a number of Color-coded War Plans to outline potential U.S. strategies for a variety of hypothetical war scenarios. The plans, which were developed by the Joint Planning Committee (which later became the Joint Chiefs of Staff) were officially withdrawn in 1939, in favor of five Rainbow Plans developed to meet the threat of a two-ocean war against multiple enemies.

The best-known of these plans (although they were secret at the time) is probably War Plan Orange, a series of contingency plans for fighting a war with Japan alone, unofficially outlined first in 1919, then officially in 1924.[1] Orange formed some of the basis for the actual campaign against Japan in World War II and included the huge economic blockade from mainland China and the plans for interning the Japanese-American population of Hawaii.”

  135. So I went out drinking Saturday night, got a little drunk and several people offered me ecstasy, I’m not in to that type of thing as it makes me paranoid but I swear somebody must have slipped me a little as I started seeing spies everywhere. There are corporate spies around as Alaska’s resources are being battled in our legislature heavily right now but I got really paranoid.

When I got home went to post a comment and decided to change my name as it seems there may be another Sam out there. I got a message saying my post was being reviewed. I freaked out and thought I had been blacklisted, Started to believe the Max and Stacey spy shit and really freaked out. When I awoke this song really fit my mood.

After that I watched Burn After Reading and remembered I had changed my name in my drunken stupor. I changed it back and I was once again able to text. I laughed at myself a little but the night scarred me a little and so I brought home a bodyguard/chauffeur/cook. I feel much better now as I can hear him snoring in the next room and my apartment is much cleaner.

I also came up with some new ideas on how to fund my organic estate near Glacier Bay and a new contract for my ecologically minded gold panning crew. Thanks for a wild ride Max and Stacey, I will be buying a black hoodie and shirt. Would love a neon green one with Max’s comments caricature and maybe some hand made Max and Stacey gold coins.

  136. Anybody else need a bodyguard/chauffeur/cook? I’m also real good in the garden.
