Second Rate Jibber Jabber

Stacy Summary:  Reading this Business Insider piece about the second rate broadband in the US.  This is true in my experience and it drives me crazy because for us, it is so convenient and fun to interview people via skype video but so few people in the US have the broadband speeds to deal with the bandwidth required.  Check out, for example, our interview with Birgitta . . . that was done on skype video and the quality is nearly as good as satellite!  I have friends who work in Hollywood for major studios and they still had DIAL-UP at home last year!  How insane is that???

Too dangerous technology. It destroyed the long distance providers in Canada in about 24 months !

  2. Marc Authier

Technology is ONLY great when it destroys monopolies.

  3. Well in Asia in many areas they have super fast broad band and hard money ooo and apparently they make things too. All they have to do is eat more !!!

    Hard times ahead for them
lol as Americans cant eat all the cake they make
    lol

  4. America is so insular and jingoistic it is incapable in realizing how backards we have become in the world….this ailment has afflicted my country since it’s inception…we have a huge inferiority complex so we puff ourselves up

  5. @ Phil very important point within this !!!! OMG
    LooooooK Out below,,,Everyone

, what the hell !!!!! I would have thought that anyone above a ratio of 3:1 should be classed as seventy, so what does the following reflect

    Why 66:1 …………why at this point!!!!!!lol
JUST US says it all a dollar a day for six months to help someone get back to normal? Whats after 6 months????

Its beyond stupid !!!! it says it all or what is really going on and behind this!!!!

    FOR EXAMPLE: !!!!!!!!!!

A person has ‘extreme debt’ if their debt to income ratio is greater than 66:1. For example, if they earn £10,000 and their debts are more than £660,000.

  6. Wow!

Didn’t you lads invent the internet et al ?

    What went wrong?

  7. Marc Authier

USA in certain ways is like a real dangerous mental retard. Sorry. But it’s true.Stupid foreigners that still don’t get it.

  8. Marc Authier

Stupid Greeks. A good example USA runned stupid people. A lot like Canada.

  9. Insane as some people may be, it is up to each person or business to choose the value of their connectivity. One thing for sure is if the government gets involved it will be worse quality and more expensive than open market solutions.
Gore invented the internet LOL and senator Rockefeller wants to turn it off. That really is insane.

  10. I tried a few bandwidth tests and I get about between 2 and 13 megabits download, and up to 3 megabits per second upload.

  11. @Wahrheit. keep us updated. ;-)

  12. goldman haystaxx

3 mb up 20 down here outside of Atlanta on a standard cable account. Can’t remember the last time it went down, it’s survived plenty of ice/snow/thunder storms. I’ve read that in most countries a comparable bandwidth would cost more than the ~$40/month I pay.

Me thinks the ‘broadband gap’ is the least of our worries, and that anything the FCC wants to do with the tubes will involve locking it down. For our safety, of course.

  13. I was in a bandwith an drummer, trombone player, bass and piano..

    Toodles.

  23. An interesting phenomenon is thinking of how the racial digital divide in America, whites are more likely to have broadband, has created this virtual community of Tea Party activists, who are mostly white people, yet no one quite designed it that way.

Unfortunately, AT&T/Comcast kills every free, mass wireless broadband scheme, though there are a few in major metro areas.

  54. frances snoot

    I miss Illya.

  55. true. what we need is “the human right” to high speed broadband. if only the government could come up with an internet tax. it would boost the economy by creating jobs in the broadband infrastructure business… of course if you’ve read Hazzlitt… maybe not such a good idea after all.

  56. Speaking of OIL
Just watched a great classic called BOOM TOWN (1940)
    Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy
    Good flick…
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boom_Town_%28film%29

They mention an oil field at the end that has an interesting history…
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kettleman_North_Dome_Oil_Field

  57. One thing that 114 page report didn’t mention was
what if IRAN hit Israel first?

With all their problems right now,
an Iranian strike would put Israel in a compromising position with the USA and UN hounding them NOT to escalate the issue…
This in turn may allow IRAN to actually develop their Nuclear Weapon capacity (I heard estimates that they can have a weapon developed by the end of the year)

  58. Iran has no capacity to launch a direct attack against Israel…and their control over Hezzbolla is overstated (meaning nonexistent)…if they wanted to get nasty they could try and pop an oil tanker or two in the Persian Gulf,(push oil over 120 might be enough to cripple us now that we are mired in this tar pit of an economy) but America has that pretty well under control…Iran is left hoping that China and Russia won’t to try and corral the American behemoth

  59. @Max and Stacy
This is how Canadians politely take over your site :) While saying “sorry” the whole time.

  60. “want” Russia or China “want” to yank our chain hard enough to balk at our plan to hem them in in Central Asia…g-d I am an ignorant F(*&*

  63. Well, considering that Amadinejad wants to wipe Israel off the face of the planet, Israel has a problem. Okay, this is coming from a German Catholic Canadian. Bear with me. My Jewish brothers and sisters, throughout human history you have been mankind’s punching bag. Finally you have the balls to stand up to assholes. You have my permission (and if you want I’ll even take it to the Vatican) to take a nuclear missile and ram it up Amadinejad’s ass. You’d be doing everyone a big favour. And okay, we’ll even wait until you find the proper lubricant so he won’t be in too much pain during insertion!

  64. uhmmm Ingrid do not wish to pick a fight with you, but I am in the camp that believes Iran is entitled to self defense and in this day and age that means Nukes, they fought a 10 year proxy war against their neighbor who invaded them on our behalf, and we are encircling them…with Nukes they assert their right not to be bombed.

as to the suffering of Jews, yes they have suffered, but pain doesn’t entitle you to inflict it upon others nor remove you from criticism in the world

sorry I have problems with ethnic nation states, sorta hold out hope for the universality of humanity

I would’ve smacked Israel a long time ago, their being our aircraft carrier in the region and doing some wet work for us doesn’t outweigh the cost they have cause for us in the region

sorry if I have to chose access to oil in the region or Israel, guess who loses that one

  65. KY jelly all the way! STUDY YOUR HISTORY! I REFUSE TO FOLLOW THE TRAP. My parents taught me well, Amen.

  66. uhmmm???? seriously have no clue what that means

  67. Then I can’t answer your question! Unfortunately, my family has lived through history and it ain’t pretty. I am the only generation who hasn’t suffered severe shit. And I pray that my children don’t, and unfortunately it looks like they won’t escape it,

  68. I don’t think you’ve read my past postings, but my parents lived through Nazi Germany. It might have been a curse to them, but it enlightened me and my sibblings on how the world works and how we are responsible for all people.

  69. Unbelievable in what was the worlds most affluent nation, the US has been raped, pillaged and is now going to be dismembered by this gang of thieves.

Almost 39 million Americans received food stamps in December, the most ever, as the jobless rate hovered near a 26- year high, the government said.

Recipients of the subsidies for food purchases climbed 23 percent from a year earlier and rose 2.1 percent from November, the U. S. Department of Agriculture said Thursday in a statement on its Web site. The number receiving the benefit has set records for 13 straight months.

Food aid climbed as the national unemployment rate reached 10.1 percent in October, the highest since June 1983, and remained at 10 percent through December before easing to 9.7 percent in January.

An average of 40.5 million people will get food stamps each month in the federal fiscal year that began Oct. 1, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said last week. The figure is projected to rise to 43.3 million in 2011.

Nevada had the biggest increase in the percentage of the population receiving the coupons, up 49 percent from December, USDA figures show. Texas had the most recipients, at 3.31 million, topping California’s 3.11 million.

  70. to the web folks who are smarter than I

the reply idea would be cool if there was a way that individual post could register the number of replies but keep them hidden unless clicked on…that way we could have the informal smorgasbord of information while those of us who occasionally get in piss ups with one or more folks can reply easier without just clogging up the whole page….and others who maybe interested in these children games can see how active they dust ups are…it would make the page cleaner and easier to navigate….without the constant scanning to see what the new comment was on

    well going to bed…NIGHT NIGHT

  71. the entire financial system is bust. But the big wigs are coming up with yet another excuse to make us beleive everything is just fine.

My question. Since this financical system is so bogus why not give millions to the average joe instead of the big banksters that already have the kingdoms and yaughts. What does it matter any more. Other than keeping the poor – poor and the rich- rich.

  72. Moodys fears breakdown of social cohesion in UK, France, Germany and Spain:

“We are not talking about revolution, but the severity of the crisis will force governments to make painful choices that expose weaknesses in society”

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/economics/7450468/Moodys-fears-social-cohesion-as-AAA-states-retrench.html

It wont take much to trigger race riots in the UK. IMHO

  73. thus exactly what the rich want the stupid peasants to do. Riot within themselves. While the rich dance merrily away at one party or another.

The peasants as usaul are being conned. Time to aim the attention of rath on the ones causing the problems. The elites. But the peasants will never figure that out.

  74. @ ingrid

I have read your past post….two things, I repeat my statement suffering doesn’t entitle you to callousness, your family suffered through history, while mine had a grand ole time…100 million people were thrown into that great bonfire not just a select few, and history has ground down millions more

ask yourself a question how many women, children and old man do you want to cast into the next blaze to demonstrate “how the world works”

America unleashes her dogs on Iran how many Iranians do you think it will take to alleviate your fears and resentment

here is a secret “America doesn’t care about Israel nor should we, nor the Irish, Germans, Japanese or anyone else” we are freezing Iran to control overland and sea access to a vital resource to our leading competitors Russia and China….we are counting on people like you not noticing this but to yell at the “bad man” we tell you to

  75. Al-doomandbloom

sheeple dont need broadband…TV takes care of most of their information needs..

  77. stupid is as stupid wants. Most folks don’t want to think about anything other than what they are told is good for them. I have no idea how so many people got so stupid. T.v. is part of it. Nutrition is part of it. But some folks are just blanking ari head morons.

  78. Don’t believe the hype on our broadband in California.
I had a T1 line in San Francisco in 99′
Ron Howard was viewing mixes of his films in the 90′s from his house in L.A.
linked to Skywalker Ranch in Marin California in real time via ISDN.

Skype is great but not broadcast ready as we heard the other day when Max was on Alex Jones. It sounds decent and if you hook up via fire wire a good broadcast quality camera, with lighting it looks ok.
It’s good enough for many things but it drops out even if you have a good pipe.
Two skype accounts, two computers with a video audio switcher would allow for a redundant backup, if you want to use skype for your network backbone.

The current push to roll some more broadband out is to soak up some stimulus money wiring the second homes and vacation homes that haven’t been foreclosed yet. If you could get a free handout to roll cable to the sticks, would you ?
The cry goes out to wire all of rural America with the best of what those city dwellers got.
But the reality is that the consumer who is willing to pay the 50 to 150 a month for a fast pipe will have to be the type of person who could care less about the price.
They just want to make sure they have a good connection to play fantasy football while they’re at their beach house for the weekend.

Max,the casino gulag cannot be fully realized until all of the heartland is wired for some Farmville action. When the farmer puts down his shovel and picks up the mouse , we are toast.

  79. Again, study your History. Ahmadinegad belongs to an Islamic sect that believes that the coming of their 12 Iman (or their Messiah) will depend on another war. Even the Ayatolloah Humani banned Ahmadinegad’s group for their extreme views. If I am wrong, show me? Religious or ethnic fundamentalism has been the world’s problems. And excuse me. have your parents been in a concentration camp!

  80. And by the way Charles, this is what happens when you fight with a mum who works full time. No Bull Shit. Just give me the facts!!!!!!!!!!!

  81. I have come across hundreds of White Papers, and research papers in general on the variable quality of the US broadband network.

To some extent, the lack of uniform high quality broadband network is not bringing the US down — but you have to look at the hyper rigid class and race system the US to see this.

Where to go for better broadband in the US…

    1. Cities near an ocean fiber cable connection point.

    2. Cities near Canada, but along the main fiber routes.

    3. The US South — the region held inside or below the Mason-Dixon demarcation line — will always have a poorer broadband network. This point is important, as this area is where race and class determine everything. If you want good connectivity, migrate from this region and never ever return — as connectivity will only get better at a glacial rate.

    4. Suburbs are important, some suburbs have very poor connectivity even in well connected metropolitan regions. Some may argue this is a race issue, and there is some truth in this.

    5. Just be prepared to pay money for a good connection, that is the general rule — this is a class issue — not a connectivity issue.

    6. Move to Canada — almost the ideal solution, as Canada’s net is not full of spaghetti routing that sill plagues the US. Point to Point traceroutes in Canada are mostly under 20 hops. You will have to move to a city along the main fiber optic lines, and some US physical connectivity rules remain … for you must remember that physical geography is a huge impediment to Canada having a better internet than it already has…

  82. Please wake up

  83. ingrid, YOu aren’ t catholic are you. Cause you sure sound like one of those dumbo’s. The western media has misinterrrupted what the iran guy has said for years. And acutally he’s not far off. The west is an evil empire. WE know it. Everyone knows it. Its all about screwing someone else and getting more for us. Typical western values.

  84. Americans, to some extent like some Asians — use the internet rather badly.

Optimal economic use of the internet takes time for any society, but societies that have deep underlining problems like the US and many parts of Asia have … makes this more difficult.

I view Twitter, Skype, Internet Messaging in general, … highly unproductive uses.

Using the internet beyond one’s national borders is very important — nations with low rates of external traffic most likely are better able to cope with severe economic change — as they can see it coming.

To some extent this model applies with respect to efficient internet use

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Bloc_information_dissemination

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:West_german_tv_penetration.svg
    – lands of the clueless

as external broadcasters then are as important then as external websites are now.

Failing to use the internet in an intellectual way (on a regional basis) also can condemn regions to increased poverty and permanent economic indolence. Intellectual use does not correlate fully with high bandwidth, but 64 kbs + connectivity does help.

  85. life suucks and then you die.

Just kidding. Hope everyone is preparing to find a sober driver for saint paddys day.

  86. In the Anglosphere, businesses always have better internet connectivity than consumers.

Only in geographically constrained places like Korea, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Andorra, … do consumers have the same connectivity as businesses.

    The real issues are :

    1. Outages, that is to say is the net up 99% of the time…

    2. Average connectivity speed, that is to say is the advertised rate available 75% of the time…

    3. Use of protocols that don’t waste bits : BitTorrent is highly efficient in its TCP form, with less than 1% waste per 1.0 Gigabytes — and its newer UDP form is up to 60% better.

    4. Dropping the non-intellectual idea of ‘always being available for messages’ is a huge help for optimal internet use — and can create huge overall spectral use of the medium.

  87. (reissue, clarification)

    4. Dropping the non-intellectual idea of ‘always being available for messages’ is a huge help.
With respect to optimal internet use, not being constantly available can create huge overall spectral savings and create better use of the medium.

  88. Hey Jon,
If I weren’t one of the dummo’s, I wouldn’t b feelin’ the pain. I just hate it when the pain is misdirected. I have no agenda.

  89. ingrid , glad your not a catholic idiot. But the western countrys are not all they try and appear to be. I’m sure you already know. A group of bankster familys that have through some great manipulation have taken control of the financial systems of the world. But the only problem. IT was all based on nothing. So now were paying the price. But the average idiot shouldn’t have to pay what was set up by from the banksters who set it all up. The banksters should be liable. At least that would be fair.

Didn’t mean any disrespect. I just don’t like religious people cause they’re so closed minded.

  97. Sorry Bonn Iranians are not arabic and speak Farsee , but your views are spot on

  98. Who cares what his religious convictions are, its his actions that count. Iran (Persia) has not invaded or attacked a country for some 500 years

  99. =====
NOBODY WANTS TO INVADE USA !
    =====

As opposed to Europe, North America is physically separated from not only Europe and Asia — but even South America. The US is a vast expanse vs Europe. Many invasion plans of the US have been mooted over the centuries, but it is universally a logistic nightmare.

Since the US started its decline, post 1965 — it has become less and less worth invading.

With the US, if you want conquest — you have to use its internal mechanisms against itself.

This finance crisis has illustrated some of them, but not universally…

  105. Just checked- speed down: 4.45Mbs, up: 0.65Mbs. I have ATT’s cheap DSL service, because that is what is available out here in the sticks. Yeah, I can’t understand people with dial up, but there are so many people here who just have no clue about computers. I don’t, and won’t, have a TV, but they will pry my DSL service out of my cold, dead fingers.

I think the reply button is great, now the comments are in order, instead of several pages later. Change happens; embrace it and make it your own.

  106. ========
Check out, for example, our interview with Birgitta . . . that was done on skype video and the quality is nearly as good as satellite! I have friends who work in Hollywood for major studios and they still had DIAL-UP at home last year! How insane is that???
    ========

If you see “Alistair Cooke’s America” — he was in LA before its real boom era.

There is some 1970s footage of LAX region areas being opened up for settlement. Some of these areas are quite isolated. There are hundreds of neighbourhoods that have severe telecom problems due to physical geography related reasons. Yet, the LAX region has very good connectivity in the Gigabits to Terabits region.

Read a map or use Google Earth and your friend’s dialup problems may become obvious. If that fails, go back to the race and class issues the US has — that will probably explain any nuances that may not be obvious.

Iceland only has, I believe — one fibre incoming (Europe) and one fibre outgoing (Americas).

If there is a cable break, some severe rerouteing would be needed for about 2 weeks …

Slow highspeed www connectivity means great connection rates and no congestion — and this landmass only has 250,000 people.

Do the math and read a map…

    @Bonn
In reality Europe and the USA will soon be at war wiht countries like China and India. It concerns also India, not just China. There no place on Earth for this “American Dream”. You just have to extrapolate the growth rate of energy consumption in India and in China to conclude there is going to be a third world agains the developing countries like yours by the USA. I’d be really worried if I was a indian industrialist. The agenda is quite clear. MONOPOLY of what’s left of oil and gas in the Middle East and Central Asia.

Rumsfeld. The GOD industry. Guns Oil and Drugs. Another GOD’s envoy. Rogue state USA, You will notice Bonn that the main victim of the Pentagon’s bloodsuckers is the taxpayer.

War is a racket first for the poor US citizens. It was the case in the ex USSR. It was the case for the Roman Empire taxpayers. The mechanic is always the same. And it is the case in the USSA. Eventually you will have to sacrifice the butter to buy the guns. Guns and no butter.

Empires make your poor. The USA is about to learn this lesson. On the surface everything looks just fine. On dee down ? Deep down ,,,,,,,,,,,
