You may have noticed that after making a flurry of prominent TV appearance, BP CEO Tony Hayward has taken a decidedly lower-profile in recent weeks. Hayward has never been the sort of executive who covets the media spotlight, but given the drubbing BP is taking over the Deepwater Horizon spill, I thought he’d continue to take the lead on the public response.
Instead, we’re getting a number of other lower-level executives. That’s OK. Hayward probably has other things to do. After all, he vowed to stay in the U.S. until BP had fixed the problem. He’s probably deeply engrossed in determining the next move in stopping the still-leaking well and containing the spill.
Or not. The Times of London reports that Hayward is returning to the U.K. today to celebrate his birthday and attend a BP board meeting. Meanwhile, BP’s chairman, Carl-Henric Svanberg, apparently has been attending a Google-sponsored tech conference in which he shared the podium with the head of Gucci to discuss leadership.
Note to conference attendees: whatever the price of admission, you paid too much.

Max how would you classify speculative products like CFDs or Spreadbets? Investors never own the underlying stock if theyre going long or borrow stock if theyre going short. Yet with CFDs you will be charged the daily interest rate of whatever country’s central bank the stock is based in (if you go long). You will also receive any declared dividends of the company (again, if youre long). Spreadbetting merely tracks the price up or down afaik. So are these products examples of naked short selling and naked long buying?
