I would say that countries in Europe unable to rely on aggregate demand for bonds is entirely incorrect.
The Eurozone probably has a bond market rivalling the U.S., and more so with the various countries being able to issue bonds individually. The U.S. doesn’t have this ability. It all has to come out of the Treasury.
The U.S. has a burgeoning problem in the municipal bond markets, where the entire market is rife with derivatives obligations. This is causing inflation at the grocer’s counter as the food industry attempts to cover the ongoing loss of subsidies.
If any market should see a major change, its the UK bond market with lower yields, but that’s held firm for the last while, due to QE.

The radio program at allamericagold.com is reporting today that the US Mint has fallen so far behind on Silver Eagle production that at present the bullion banks are no longer accepting orders. Now THAT’s news. Bullion Silver Eagles are in short supply. As opposed to yesterday’s ill-informed Zero-Hedge article. I guess someone at ZH got the tip, but then mistook the US Mint website’s year-old announcement about collector coins as confirmation. Collector Eagles have not been produced since 2008.
For future reference, the US Mint does NOT sell Bullion Silver or Gold Eagles, they never have. They sell collector editions of the coins, usually minted at the West Point mint rather than Philadelphia. These coins are intended for collectors not investors. Bullion Eagle coins are only sold through the mint’s 12 or 13 authorized dealers. (Who intern act as middle men for all other dealers)
Fractional 2010 Gold Eagles will be available later this month – I see at least one site is already accepting pre-orders.

I will agree that the US hit the skids during the Nixon administration. Most people did not really care (or notice) that he removed the dollar from the gold standard. But- Watergate, and the subsequent hearings, showed that corruption indeed did go all the way to the top. (in relation to Fail safe devices)
The failure of failsafe devices IMO says more about the operators than the device.
For example I worked in semi conductor research at one stage. regulations required all sorts of safety equipment but this was reguarly over ridden by operators/management with important work to do.
High readings of Arsine gas in the exhaust was taken care of by sniffing fresh air with the gas detector to get a reading instead of taking samples from the duct. there for the detector did not initiate its auto procedure. Lots of ways round devices.
Maybe they just got caught this time
