The only way I can figure that the US could increase exports to fit Obama’s rhetoric is if we invaded or overthrew the leaders of the “enemies” Hillary Clinton recently criticized for stifling dissent: Venezuela, Cuba, Iran, N. Korea, etc. etc. But that wouldn’t even necessarily mean exporting goods, it would likely be just opening markets so our multis can invade and exploit the labor and resources.
Re: quality goods, I can say that when I was doing research on the best baby products, the majority of them were either made in Germany, Switzerland, France, or the UK . . . right down to the freaking precision nail clippers (made in Germany). I came across forum upon forum where new parents first purchased a US brand of product X made overseas cheaply, and they had to keep buying more and more expensive brands of product X until they eventually settled on the most expensive, but best quality product made in one of the countries I listed. Pretty sad, but good on those countries for continuing to make good stuff.

Placing the cap on top of the leak was the climax of two days of delicate preparation work and a day of slowly lowering it into position a mile below the sea. The capping project — akin to building an underwater Lego tower — is just a temporary fix, but the oil giant’s best hope for containing the spill.
The next unknown is whether the 18-foot-high, 150,000-pound metal stack of pipes and valves will work. BP plans to start tests Tuesday, gradually shutting the valves to see if the oil stops or if it starts leaking from another part of the well.

I did read that and I see its been on the telly news as well. I find it amusing that the unions are up in arms about it, these are the same union leaders that get fat cat pay whilst most of the members get normal wages. Welcome to the USA, max & Stacey, I’m hearing 07.10.2010 and appreciate your grasp of the US workplace/educational non-system. I’m one of those forced into the “day-trading/gamer” profession, I confess. I thought moving to LA back in 2000 I could land an engineering job but without already possesing secret clearance there was nothing but “cookie cutter” requirements i.e. “we want to hire you to do what you already did for five years or more”.
Exporting jobs of course is not new, nor is it more republican than democrat – as a contracting scientist funded via NASA, we were bombarded with morale-reducing lectures on how you have to get versatile for several career changes, which was a load of crap – the only real career security came if you became a federal employee, i.e. burrowed in and tenured.
The American people need to hear about German workers, how they are paid, the benefits and the fact that many of them are on the boards of the companies they work for.
Americans have been lied to about those horrible unions and that’s why the jobs went overseas. Noooooo, they went over there because the owners were not going to share in the profits of the company. And the owners are very lazy and short sighted and addicted to becoming obscenely rich in comparison to the workers and citizens of the US. That’s why the jobs went there. That’s why.
