I asserted no such continuity. The last book of the OT was written around 400BC and the Dead Sea Scrolls were written later (150BC – 70 AD per Wiki). In the period between the OT and the NT, there were no Prophets hence no new Revelation. I merely assert that one very important book of the Bible, Isaiah, has not changed in 2000 years.

Thanks for the Proverbs, probably my favorite book of the bible. As a kid, I read it over and over. I esp. remember the exhortations, to value learning, knowledge, etc. over silver and gold. Which may explain why I’m bankrupt.

I want to ask you all two questions, regarding how to be human in today’s world and how to properly participate in today’s economy, but it’s going to take a bit of background.
The other night, F. Beard posted something about there being perfect continuity, from Isaiah to the Dead Sea Scrolls, which I took as a rebuttal to the assertion that oligarchs have edited the bible to their own benefit. In reply, I posted material from the Dead Sea Scrolls regarding the War of the Sons of Light Against the Sons of Darkness, and material showing how that myth is taken directly from Zoroastrianism.
While I admire, sincerely, your devotion to one of the great works of humanity, F. Beard, I don’t believe the bible is for everyone. It’s a myth (itself a compilation, not a unique revelation in the history of humanity) specific to a nation at a time and place that have passed. It was for them, there, at that time.
Here’s where I strongly disagree with Joseph Campbell: he often said, that mythology is of no use to us anymore, in our age of such advanced technology. Of course it is! We needn’t choose, between rejecting it all or worshiping within its frame, right?
When the Habiru invaded Canaan, there already were people living there. The patriarchal worshipers of the war god, Yahweh, conquered the matriarchal worshipers, then the priests set to work, perverting the matriarchal myths, of a Mother beyond whom, there is no other, into the myth of a bachelor tyrant-engineer of the universe.
That’s where we get the idea, that’s it all about the leverage; about being the Biggest Man-God with the Biggest Levers up the Highest Stairs. That’s why we use war as a metaphor for everything: it’s what god would do.
Birds don’t fly with borrowed plumage, and nations don’t thrive with borrowed myths. Wouldn’t you agree?
What’s the myth of our time and place? What metaphors will carry us through this upheaval safely to the yonder shore? More of the same belief, that the cosmos is either god’s own, or no one’s own, perpetual motion justice-dispensing bogus holy war cash machine?
That human behavior, exactly equivalent to Newton’s mechanics, ever and always is to be determined by outside forces applying ever greater leverage?
Or, as I believe, and as in the movie The Matrix, that we are organisms who’ve strangely come to believe in themselves as mechanisms. We living, breathing, growing, self-knowing beings have been reduced, first to clay dolls crafted from mud and only later having the holy spirit blown into them, then to Newtonian voodoo dolls, oh so easily jacked.
In Newton’s cosmos, it’s all about the leverage and competition. Trouble is, as we’ve known since Einstein, we’re not in Newton’s over-simplified cosmos.
So, here are my questions.
Do we say, as in days gone by: (A) “there but for the grace of god go I,” when looking with pity on human suffering?
Or, do we say, in recognition of the self-same nature of self and other, (B) “there by the grace of god go I”?
Senator Hatch’s view, and the view Max mentions from the 19th century American West, express (A). “Thank god we’re not those people, god really hates them! What a terrible temper he has. Let’s show god how much we love him (and let there be no doubt: god’s got balls) by making their lives a living hell. That’ll get us into heaven.”
F. Beard, with your knowledge of the bible, how does it express (B)? Are there specific examples of it you can point to?
What concrete counter-proposals, to those of our neo-feudal kleptocratic MOTU, flow from sharing identity with the Other, based in compassionate, empathic, cooperation, not belligerent competition and fear of our own shadow?
