TORONTO, July 16 (Reuters) – Canada’s Alpha Group, the Toronto Stock Exchange’s main rival, plans to launch a “dark pool” facility that enables buyers and sellers to match trades anonymously, in its latest effort to win business from competitors.
The country’s biggest alternative trading system, which has captured 20 percent of the Canadian stock trading market since its November 2008 launch, said on Friday it expects to open the facility in the fourth quarter of this year. The plan is subject to regulatory approval.
In dark pools, many of which are independent, buy and sell orders are matched anonymously so that the intentions of the traders aren’t broadcast to the wider market.
The move could put further pressure on TMX, which runs the TSX and the junior TSX Venture Exchange. Its share of equity trading has fallen to just over 70 percent in June from nearly 90 percent a year earlier, according to public data.
Dubbed “IntraSpread,” the Alpha dark pool will allow dealers to seek trading matches within their firm at the best prices.
Assuming it is approved by regulators, the new dark pool could have a major advantage over many rivals given its ownership structure. Alpha is owned by the investment dealer arms of the country’s largest banks, who direct much of the stock trading flow in Canada.
These include BMO Nesbitt Burns Inc , CIBC World Markets Inc , National Bank Financial Inc , RBC Dominion Securities Inc , Scotia Capital Inc , and TD Securities Inc , as well as Canaccord Capital Inc , Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, and Desjardins Securities Inc.
Jos Schmitt, chief executive of Alpha, said the new trading facility is expected to help the firm to expand its market share to between 30 percent and 40 percent by 2012.
He said the trading alternative will benefit clients of participating dealers by offering “a trade price better than the NBBO (national best bid offer) of all transparent marketplaces in Canada,” and lower fees than rivals.
Alpha’s move mirrors a trend seen in the United States, where several big banks run in-house dark pools to shave trading costs.
Banks that run their own dark pools, such as Goldman Sachs Group Inc , can avoid the fees associated with sending orders to exchanges when they “internalize” orders from their clients, their proprietary trading desks, and from elsewhere.
Much of the concern about dark pools is that their anonymous nature means that stock pricing may not be transparent.
But Schmitt said the facility will be offered to all Alpha subscribers.
“This is a facility that all dealers who are subscribers of Alpha — over 80 now — can use to provide their own clients with price improvement while at the same time reducing the cost of trading,” he said.
Two dark pools currently operate in Canada including Match Now, owned by Investment Technology Group and Liquidnet, which caters to the buy side. Note: That means so-called “dark pools” cater to the sell-side, meaning infinite naked shorting of shares. In Canada, naked shorting is perfectly legal, the practise being that you can naked short as much as you want, but you are obliged to buy every last share sell order back. You can keep these buy back orders in escrow as long as you can provide liquidity to the account, otherwise, you buy back all of your sell-side orders. Thus the markets show no mismatch of shares at all. Much of the buying by sell-side brokers is a glib matching of shares, rather than actual buying.
However, if you want to settle your account, money goes out the door. So shares which exist solely in cyberspace trade ad infinitum with no money actually changing hands.
This works exactly the same way in jurisdictions where naked shorting is illegal, but not pursued in any sense, since this is the way the commercial banking sector competes with one another, by creating a poker table with only a handful of players.
The boyz in New York are definitely at it again. If they get gold below 1185 then there will be some technical sell off and day traders will do the job JP Morgan and co started, IMHO. WASHINGTON — Bank regulators have accused four former executives of failed IndyMac Bank of negligence in making loans to homebuilders and are seeking a total $300 million in damages.
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., which took over California-based IndyMac when it collapsed two years ago, filed the civil lawsuit against the four executives in federal court in Los Angeles. The suit, filed July 2, is the FDIC’s first legal volley related to the wave of bank failures in the financial crisis, and an FDIC spokesman said Wednesday that more can be expected in the future.
The FDIC alleges in the suit that the four IndyMac officers “negligently” approved loans to homebuilders around the country that had slim chance of being repaid.

There would be no drug war if Americans would stop consuming drugs. I don’t understand why there is no activism from individual citizens to stop…stop using.
There are all kinds of activism of every stripe, every color. Why are there no proponents of “stopping usage, demand from Americans?” The power of these drug thugs (suppliers) would be lost and so would be the violence if Americans did not consume.
If one favors legalization then why not win that first in the US. If there is no win in the courts or politics then why not stop the war by denying the supply by denying the demand.
All this talk of GLOBAL WARMING…and we could end violence and murder TODAY…if people would stop demanding their drugs. A person’s life could be made whole TODAY! In some place, someone is being murdered or tortured because Americans cannot stop using drugs!
Why we will never win: Look at the data regarding employment and mean annual income in Washington DC. See who is #1!
