The stories out of Japan remind me of the anime movie “Ghost in the Shell: Solid State Society” The plot revolves around an apartment complex full of dying old people who are fostering kidnapped children who are being trained by a military dynast. The money for the project is “stolen” by siphoning off the fractional cents from people’s bank accounts.
The Ghost in the Shell movies provided some major inspiration for the Matrix trilogy and the new Battlestar Galactica.

Here in Norway we sell t-Shirts printed with “If we had dolphins we would kill them too” As a nation we are proud of our whaling activities and supposedly we should only kill certain whales that are not in danger of extinction. I do not believe for a second that its the case out on the sea.
I would really like to see Paul Watson expand his operation to fishing trawlers. They are killing our oceans and there really isnt much fish left. There are whole communities here in Norway that have been wiped out because of overfishing by these boats. Hey Max, Stacy in reference to words being meaningless. I will relate this;
I was reading a technical related blog the other day and decided to look at the profile of a contributor from the USA. He described his politics as “on the red side”.
My initial thought was, here’s a courageous fellow, admitting to having communist leanings, In the U.S. I would imagine that will make life difficult for you.(RED being the Internationally recognised symbol for left revolution etc). Then it dawned on me red is the colour of the political party of the right in the U.S.
This may be one reason it is almost impossible for people who are not from the States to follow their thought processes. They use the same words, but the words have entirely different connotations outside the U.S.

An Icebreaker would probably be too slow to catch the Japanese Whaling fleet.
Capt. Watson is very familiar with ramming techniques, and how to destroy and sink a ship. He has sunk a half dozen pirate whaling ships so far, all without being convicted of any crime. He could easily ram and sink the Nissan Maru factory ship with the ships he has now. But keep in mind that Watson’s strategy is non-violent. Ramming a fully manned ship could easily cause fatalities. Instead he skillfully collides the ships at an oblique angle so as not to cause injuries, while his crew boards the other ship or coats their deck with skink bombs. The reason gov’t's can’t legally do anything is that these ships were operating illegally to begin with. So the owners of the ships, themselves pirates, never go to the legal justice system for help.
But I take your point, that at some point if powerful enough people call you a terrorist, they can claim the right to kill you. That’s what Japan’s whaling industry is trying for now. They should have been charged for attempted murder of 6 crew of the Adi Gil when they deliberately rammed and sunk her, but instead the Captain of the ship they ran over was brought up on charges in Japan!
The discussion by Capt. Watson and Max about catching and freezing all of the Blue Fin Tuna to drive up the price as they go extinct really hit home with me. I heard recently somewhere (maybe here?) that banks are not releasing many really high end real estate properties back on to the market. Just the smaller/older/junkier stuff is being pushed for resale. A form of hoarding, perhaps, like tuna? Waiting years, if need be, for the older housing stock to erode from lack of occupancy, then suddenly these properties have -so- much more value…especially if there are fewer builders still around to make these things…

I noticed that confusion of terms and then later you talk about the reinvention of words and meanings.
Orwell’s 1984 spends a good part of the whole book pointing out “newspeak” and how language can be used politically to deceive and manipulate people, leading to a society in which the people unquestioningly obey their government and mindlessly accept all propaganda as reality. Language becomes a mind-control tool, with the ultimate goal being the destruction of will and imagination.

we should get some analysis on this story: my thinking is that this is ground zero corruption. not this specific event but the accumulated efforts of politicians to “buy votes” (over the years). oddly, as far as I know, no one does analysis of the “political economy” where the currency is votes. so policies that get enacted from one economy (politics, votes as currency) are implemented and effect other economies, such as a “market economy,” where goods are exchanged for dollars as a currency.

Besides Afghanistan, Colombia(the first country we are occupying, the second we have a few bases and our gonna have 7 by the end of the year) Congo(tax dollars funding US backed troops to buy Chinese arms) and Somalia(fundamentalist overspill from Eritrean and Ethiopian Civil War–US armed northern groups in Ethiopia to invade The Sudan. Instead they formed a separatist movement and created a successionist state which broke off from Ethiopia—->Eritrea) Mexico is the most dangerous nation on the planet.
We also see the rehashed Southern Strategy of the Republicans. Watch FOXNews–it began with the bogus stories about ACORN. Recently it was evident in the New Black Panther Party non-event and the Shirley Sherrod gambit. It stokes white fears of “black rage” and scapegoats African Americans as the practicers or undeserving benefactors of “reverse racism”. Blacks outnumber whites 4 to 1 per capita in US jails and prisons. The poverty and education gap between minorites and whites is alarming. To claim there is reverse racism flies in the face of the truth.

From someone that had mid 90s “letters to the editor” of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat printed about this sleazeball Greenspan and his mid 90s gibberish articles on the economy that were absolutely incoherent (my letters met by almost 99% deaf ears I might add), all I can say when I hear him proclaim the American economy “broken” is: it is the very first time in history we witness someone eulogizing their own funeral.

British X-Files describe secret UFO encounters

Britain released hundreds of previously secret “UFO files” on Thursday including a letter saying that Winston Churchill had ordered a 50 year cover-up of a wartime encounter between a UFO and military pilot.
The files, published by the National Archives, span decades and contain scores of witness accounts, sketches and classified briefing notes documenting mysterious sightings across Britain.
One Ministry of Defence note refers to a 1999 letter stating that a Royal Air Force plane returning from a mission in Europe during World War Two was “approached by a metallic UFO”.
The unidentified author of the letter says his grandfather attended a wartime meeting between Churchill and Dwight Eisenhower during which the two expressed concern over the incident and “decided to keep it secret”.
The MoD subsequently investigated the case but found no written record of the incident, the files say.
“… the MoD does not have any expertise or role in respect of ‘UFO/flying saucer’ matters or to the question of the existence or otherwise of extraterrestrial lifeforms, about which it remains totally open-minded,” it said in a 1999 note.
Britain has been slowly releasing long-classified files related to sightings of mysterious craft in the skies above its cities, compiled and investigated by the MoD over past decades.
Some cases subsequently received rational explanations, such as meteors burning up in the atmosphere, but many are unsolved.
One memo, dated 1997, contains reports of “sonic booms” and a mysterious plane crash in northern England. No wreckage was found in an ensuing search by the police and rescue teams.
Another incident refers to sightings of a “black triangular UFO” over the home of the shadow home secretary in Kent in the late 1990s. An investigation showed no breach of security.
In a case filed in 1995, the captain of a plane approaching Manchester airport reported a near-miss with an “unidentified object”, and a witness on the ground separately provided a sketch showing a UFO “20 times the size of a football field”.
An inquiry failed to indentify the object, the memo said.
Buried deep among meticulous sketches and MoD memos, some files refer to curious episodes in Britain’s history. During the Cold War, Britain sent fighter jets to intercept Soviet aircraft as often as 200 times a year, one MoD document showed.
The note, filed in 1996, said mystery sightings picked up on radar during the Cold War were invariably proved to be Soviet ant-submarine or long-range reconnaissance planes.
“Prior to the demise of the Former Soviet Union, aircraft were scrambled some 200 times annually to intercept and investigate uncorrelated tracks penetrating the UK Air defence region (AKADR) from the north…” it said.
The last such scramble was in September 1991 — around the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Yes, Sea Shepherd has though of this already. When the Makah Indians in Washington State US tried to start whaling, Watson bought a midget submarine and painted it like an Orca, the only known predator of the whales in question. He equipped the sub with Orca sound transmitting devices. I don’t know if he ever deployed this.
In the ongoing Anti-Japanese whaling campaign this wouldn’t work because SSCS’s main ships can’t catch all 4 of the hunter ships, but can catch the Nissan Maru factory ship.
