Whats pleasing to see about those photos is the image quality – its still excellent which tells me they were probably taken on Kodachrome :

A lot of colour processes like RA4 (most common photo print) fade even stored in the dark such images have to stored at minus 20 and in controlled humidity for longevity. This means much of our visual photo culture will fade into oblivion and those people who collect photo art and pay serious money for colour photos would do well to find out what process was used.

btw have bin doing some thinking lately about the SDR also and I still think it isn’t duable one rate for the whole world simply doesn’t work look at the mess in Europe now. It’s all wishfull thinking in providing an escape route from the sinking dollar it won’t work and I am going to tell you why.
First of all they’ve been talking about this idea since the mid seventies (see article under) the same as they’ve been talking about abolishing gold all together from the system. They wish.
Look at Europe now where you have the problem of one currency standing in the way of what used to give a much easier solution when all the national currencies were still in place.
Greece could have simply defaulted or have a devaluation of it’s currency but look what other fine mess has been build up now in greater debts which halts future growth expectations.
Not good at all.
So if you would place this idea on a world currency you can understand this would create even bigger problems and why should you?
Furthemore the SDR will still be partly based on the dollar and maybe the other “better’ currencies will lift the SDR up but what good does this do for the emerging economies? Non.
It undermines the trust of the SDR and here we come to the most important point of any currency; Trust. So the SDR will be an half baken solution only benefiting the jobs at the IMF but this hardly will be enough and most dollars are hold outside the U.S. by China and Japan.
It’s all from a manical obsession of this New World Government with one currency and one rate but this simply won’t work.
I mean, if it doesn’t even work on a much smaller scale now in Europe let alone in the whole world.
Like said it’s more of an U.S./IMF escape route to try to burn the dollar vessel leave it behind and step over on the SDR ship but it’s not as simple as that cause America is not alone and don’t hold all the dollars.
So I see it more as a desperate attempt to save their own skin just like the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the upcoming one probably in Iran.
The Emperor has no clothes and Washington is highly delusional. The “great game” is over and the music stopt hours ago but the thought of still hearing the echo makes them believe it’s still there.

“I would suggest the Canon Eos 5d Mark 2 at the moment. It creates a H264 codec which is highly compressed but looks great and many say it actually looks better than the Red. Both give great depth of field (shallow) if you want to make nice pictures. You would however need to record sound seperately, i have an olympus LS5 which is great (like a zoom H2 but better) and can also use an external mic. You would need a clapper board (maybe too much stress for some doc filmers but if you want a good aesthetic its worth it). Its a lot cheaper than a Red.”
Correct on the cost of RED camera’s – but I had hiring in mind .
depth of field – its the focal length of lens and size of aperture (hence light level) which relates to the depth of the field of focus:-

Camera’s with smaller sensors would have better depth of field but at the moment lesser image quality.
The Canon is essentially a stills camera but they are bridging the gap and its an interesting development for photography – high frame rate and higher asa with maintained image quality allows for more dynamic use of a stills camera – on the move.
Budding film makers with a low budget would do well to check out Nick Broomfields work and technique.

P2 is a great system. I use Sony EX3 which is also solid state (Card system instead of tape) So easy once you overcome the data loss fear as you correctly say Stacy. I use Sony because I live in a Sony town and we must all be compatible with each other for multi-camera use.
The new kid on the block is the Canon 5D and 7D. These are DSLR cameras, or cameras that look like stills cameras that shoot High quality HD video.
These are being used for lots of commercial, promo and music video work and use the prime lenses and short depth of field (the film look).
They cost around $3,000 for the body and then you also buy stills lenses on top of that.

The Red camera is the “hip” camera of choice, however there are continuing problems with sound. So feed camera sound but run a double system (sound recorder and slate) so you have lots of backup. One set up where the camera crew forgets to plug in sound, or screws up a menu will make you wish you had separate back up sound being recorded.
I still have some contact with a film school I taught at. The kids on their non school projects are apparently using Canon SLR’s that shoot HD. They apparently buy three and rotate them when they get hot. I’m not sure what specific model they are using but something like the Canon ES550d is my guess. They have started making mounts for these cameras so you can balance them on your shoulder for a more stable shot. Some will also take standard Canon lenses. These cameras do 30 FPS HD 1080P, record sound as well, but it will probably be a scratch track, you will need a sound recordist, I’m available and have a EU passport.
For professional results make sure you get the sound right, listen for back ground noise (cars, planes) and cut when you hear it. Remember to turn off the fridge. Leave your keys in the fridge so you remember to turn it back on.
If you think a camera mic will do the job you are wasting money. A good boom operator with a decent microphone is a necessity for drama. Quiet locations are a necessity, if it’s noisy it will cost you $$$$$ to fix it. BTW it can’t be fixed.
I recently worked a show that had a great idea, instead of plywood dance floor (level surface they roll the camera dolly around on) they were using light weight 1/4 inch plexiglass. Instead of a heavy expensive rental dolly. the camera operators sat on a sort of stool with 6 casters made up from roller skate wheels that swiveled. Camera was over the shoulder and the operators just used their feet to move around.

I havent tried the Lumix. I used the Eos 5D a few times and was very impressed, also with canon you can use many different lenses via adapters (Leica R) and theres a great canon zoom (2,8 maybe 24-70) which is kind of expensive but makes excellent pictures. I was amazed that they actually added the video capacity to an SLR.

I would suggest the Canon Eos 5d Mark 2 at the moment. It creates a H264 codec which is highly compressed but looks great and many say it actually looks better than the Red. Both give great depth of field (shallow) if you want to make nice pictures. You would however need to record sound seperately, i have an olympus LS5 which is great (like a zoom H2 but better) and can also use an external mic. You would need a clapper board (maybe too much stress for some doc filmers but if you want a good aesthetic its worth it). Its a lot cheaper than a Red.
