The moral is the US cannot afford to pay for them, and each day this lack of being able to pay increases.

By behaving in a reasonable manner and being self sacrificial (something the Romans never fully achieved with the Britons 1500 years ago) — covert war as part of Empire never needed to evolve.
The laws of accounting ultimately stopped working in the UK’s favour, but it least it left behind some good things in its former colonies. The US and its empire, like its special forces — leaves behind nothing.
US Special forces operations are at best a band-aid measure to make the collapse of empire less destructive, but it is doubtful the destructive forces can or could ever be abated as Americans are not self sacrificial.
