US studies effects of ‘digital bomb’
This week several US media outlets reported that NASA was warning the massive flare that caused spectacular light shows on Earth earlier this month was just a precursor to a massive solar storm building that had the potential to wipe out the entire planet’s power grid.
NASA has since rebutted those reports, saying it could come “100 years away or just 100 days”, but an Australian astronomer says the space community is betting on the sooner scenario rather than the latter.
Despite its rebuttal, NASA’s been watching out for this storm since 2006 and reports from the US this week claim the storms could hit on that most Hollywood of disaster dates – 2012.
“The general consensus among general astronomers (and certainly solar astronomers) is that this coming Solar maximum (2012 but possibly later into 2013) will be the most violent in 100 years,” astronomy lecturer and columnist Dave Reneke said.
Similar storms back in 1859 and 1921 caused worldwide chaos, wiping out telegraph wires on a massive scale.
US government officials earlier this year took part in a “tabletop exercise” in Boulder, Colorado, to map out what might happen if the Earth was hit with a storm as intense as the 1859 and 1921.
NASA said that a recent report by the National Academy of Sciences found that if a similar storm occurred today, it could cause “$1 to 2 trillion in damages to society’s high-tech infrastructure and require four to 10 years for complete recovery”.

Yes, well it’s certainly odd that if there was any reality to this phenomena (which I believe there is) that it seems so geographically tempered. But that’s all we have for the moment.
Just for the record, my belief that some are not man-made stems from a wide array of factors that I couldn’t possibly do justice to in one post. But in the spirit of nonsensical brevity:
‘Real’ crop circles don’t have broken stems which is what happens when “men with planks” attempt to craft one. They are more ‘bent’ or ‘swirled’ together. There is also evidence of heat/microwave shaping. The soil has microscopic evidence of molten iron particles.
Then there are some shapes which demonstrate (imho) incredible creativity and ingenuity. — These are not ordinary field graffitiists!
And one was found to explain a piece of basic mathematics that was not known before. That some person would rather tramp their discoveries in a field than get recognition and acclaim in an academic journal, strikes me as being just unlikely.
Frankly even if I was wrong, some are jaw-droopingly beautiful (both visually and mathematically). There should be some kind of annual Oscar award no matter where they originate from! But to just think that the evidence suggests that they could be… I mean, wow.

I agree that it’s intriguing (and/or suspicious) that it’s mainly a UK phenomenon. But in fact they have occurred in South America, Canada and Australia. Not being a serious ‘kook’ in this in this area, I can’t presently comment on the other countries you specifically mention.
There is also some evidence that it’s not just some 20th century phenomenon either, though the geometry of the patterns has definitely advanced over the more recent period.

I was originally a skeptic, but I attempted to approach the subject objectively and scientifically. I am now convinced that whilst some Crop Circles are undeniably faked (i.e. man made see: http://www.circlemakers.org/) others — astonishingly enough — appear to be absolutely not.
As to what makes these ones and why, I have no idea. But given some of the mathematics that some display, it’s definitely of intelligent origin.

I would set aside for a minute any speculation that the bond market can crash for now. Just look at the yields. As long as there is aggregate demand for bonds and bond price appreciation, then there will be price appreciation in the bullion.
Bullion would be acting like a zero coupon bond, but also the sole financial asset that remains above any currency devaluation. I think its right to say that the asset price deflation about to occur will be perceived as THE crash, though we’ve had so many. The crash of the Nickel price, the crash of the Uranium price, the crash of the Oil price, the crash of Copper, the stock market crash, the flash crash, any end every speculative hopeful out there is now subject to another complete rout.
Also, anybody trying to gainsay the coming crash in sovereign bonds has to wonder first what happened to all of those Chinese Yuan printed up so conveniently to pay for the U.S. treasuries, and who in the right mind would allow that kind of transaction? As much as the Chinese have been “purchasing” U.S. treasuries the untradeable kajillion of Yuan has to be sitting in escrow somewhere. All of it worthless counterfeit commie cominterm, Batman!! And perhaps the Chinese aren’t buying any treasuries any more because of convertibility problems with their currency? Has anybody though about that? Hanh? Well did you?
I would say that the onset of the crash will blow out the speculators, and first and foremost will be the Chinese real estate market, along with it the Yuan, which will have to depeg. Anything is possible, but I suspect Mr. Berninger is aware of the same charts that I posted here over the last two days, that treasury yields had fallen almost but not quite to the low point of December 2009, and then in the last few days, turned up.
Thus Marc Faber’s ‘line in the sand’ held and the bottom in yields was indeed late last year.
On this basis, people are saying the final storm has started.

Technically yesterday the stock market started recovery from an oversold bounce. That should go on for a few days at least. Also on the Russell 2000 you can see this bounce as the right side of a double bottom, with the left side being July 1,2010. That’s a two month wide double bottom, which provides some stability for a little while.
Anything is possible, true, but right at the moment, I don’t see it in three weeks. Unless some political thing happens like an overnight devaluation of the dollar by some big amount, or something like that….

If I read this correctly, they are saying that Congress is inept (and by extension, also are the people who voted them in), and for the sake of professionalism, the central bankers must endeavor to ‘influence’ fiscal policy.

Frankly, I think it is absurd and obscene that the US Treasury borrows money to begin with. As a sovereign country, the US has the right to simply spend money into existence as English kings once did with tally sticks. Government bonds were a means to secure the loyalty of the rich to the new US government. That need is long past. No one should have the right to collect interest (gathered at gunpoint) for loaning money to the government when the government can simply issue money itself, interest and debt free.
Ah well, way past bedtime. I’ll wait to see how the show ended.

My likely explanation for crop circles are people with very long string, a design that’s been scaled up, some planks of wood and a quant worked out how to very accurately set this out on the ground. I’m going long on that.

@John – maybe you’re right. I’ve witnessed the subtle fold on each seperate blade of the crop and it’s beyond my comprehension – so intricate at the ‘grass root’ level so to speak. No crushing or scraping – it’s like each blade has been bent by hand.
I love the idea that it’s creative imagination of some sort manifested as a gift to our senses.
I think the most likely explaination for crop circles is satellite microwave energy. A pattern is loaded into a computer, transmitted to a satellite and then gently burned into a crop field.
I get the feeling they have a lot to do with the burial mound barrows. I’ve met a few hemphead circle enthusiasts (no insult intended) and they tell me the eternal energy source ot the buried gnostics attract cosmic energy as they continue their ‘dreamtime’. No proof but it appeals to my senses. There seems to be a correlation between our sun’s activity and the frequency/elaboration of the circles too so maybe EMF has a part to play. So pleased you get a good feeling from them too!

@MirrorMirror – I live in Wiltshire some of the time (when I’m not in Japan). I’m just blown away by crop circles and have been lucky enough to visit a few near my home (5 mins from Stone Henge). At the very centre of the circles you have no radio or mobile phone signal – step just 6 inches from the centre and your transistor radio and mobile kick back into life. There have been far more this year but far less msn press reports. The 3D one on the vid is just sublime.

More important than trying to guess the date of the next crash ( like waiting for the GBP to crash ) , is to understand that JPMorgan “owns” the Derivatives market AND JPMorgan “is” the FED basically.
Secondly:
With a Nov. election coming, it is unlikely that the US GOvt./FED(JPM) will allow a crash to happen beforehand.
Read up on Hamilton’s essay on “The JPM Derivatives Monster” , whereby owned ca. 60% of ALL US derivatives way back in 2001.
What the number is now, no idea .. but probably far bigger IMO.
As to China looking to see the US KO’d … well, I don’t think so.
They’re happy to see things develop SLOWLY … and continue that way IMO.
