Holy shit. Then what do you believe?
In statism?
It’s either people have control of their own money or the government does.
Max, you really need to get control of Stacey. She’s about to take your show in a very dangerous direction. This leftist bs doesn’t work.
Rightist bs is not neoconism. It’s the free market, and yes, that does work. Because it involves giving people power over their own lives rather than the government.
For me, I believe that the washing machine was a much greater invention than the internet. I’m starving and my daughter believes (too much government intervention) that this internet gives a person access. Yes, I can see any type of food in the world – but I can’t eat it. I know that I can do many of the jobs advertised – but I’m barred from getting a paying job.
Socialism and welfare have no meaning without a definition on what you mean. Yes, we are spending trillions on the disabled – without a way to improve your situation, you’re still in abject hell. Expansion on the fraud, deception, greed, waste and hate in the current welfare system (including Medicaid, SSDI, “health” insurance) would be a disaster. On the other hand, changing the handouts to the banksters and the “nonprofits” to viable jobs with a voice (opportunity) for the disabled and the poor (usually the same thing) would make all the difference.
Having your life stolen by a label of disability “for your own good”, changes your thinking about the Matrix and justice in the US in general. (Sorry I don’t know much about the UK.)
I am going to a talk about this subject on Thurday night. Oh yeah

He (Ha-Joon Chang) may be one of the people Mr. Kunstler was wondering where they were; can you spell morality, character?
@alister,
You can apply whatever label you wish to Prof. Keen, but it won’t change the fact that he’s right.

Try Youkali Jischinger.
Sorry. It’s Prison Planet. Dreaming soon to be abolished by the G20 and considered an act of terrorism.
I wonder if he’s chosen or has a country in mind that meets or comes close to his ideal.
anyone know?
@ Stacy
What’s your opinion on this story?

more junk Stacy?
“Another myth that needs to be busted is the idea that we can discuss economics without any moral implications,”
duh.
Every human being since the garden of eden has undergone the dilemma of choosing to do what is right or wrong. When the caring mind is subverted by the rational mind, and the psychopathic savants begin to run the numbers like a game and there is no soul left to sell – it all goes to hell. In a hand basket, I might add.
Why does it take an economic genius and the recognition by such figures as Noam Chomsky to get people to recognized that it is good to be nice? This is a fundamental problem of the rational mind – no compassion – just the bottom line. Power without wisdom, in our present circumstance, is suicide.
All Ha-Joon Chang is elucidating is what everybody knows. It would still be good to read more about his insights. Maybe Max can have him on his program?
I think there are a lot of real solutions but none of them have anything to do with erecting the next great male dominated power structure. There isn’t enough economic viagra in the world to bring vitality back to the dead and rotting reproductive parts of a zombie planet.

What KD doesn’t understand is that the business cycle that Steve Keen sees is not “natural” Austrian business cycle but has a specific causal agent (i.e., the rentier class that KD inadvertently supports; the same folks that brought us Ponzinomics to prove that Rentieronomics are the true answer). KD is a good-hearted mensch, but I hope he fully wakes up to his reality.

There is a workable alternative and in my opinion will be introduced when this system implodes. Rationing will be required and accepted because “welfare” is ok when one needs to eat right? And here is where I think it will go, and yeah its a little crazy…These rations/credits will probably be distributed electronically via an eftpos type card. However, the value of the goods we purchase with credits will be determined by the carbon emitted in the production of the goods. This makes energy/carbon intensive foods and products (eg processed foods) a thing of the past along with the majority of useless waste consumption. Banking, insurance, finance will also cease to exist overnight and with it almost all the useless resource wasting jobs. Production and distribution of needed goods will temporarily be placed under emergency government controls until another non government but globalized resource management system is developed. Needed products will be designed to last, be repairable, upgradable and recycleable. People won’t be working and will volunteer around their communitys in anyway they can like teaching skills, community gardens, caring for the elderly, cleaning up the parks, rivers etc. People will begin to enjoy a strange new sense of wealth and freedom. They will have time for their children, family and friends. (pull ma and pa out of aged care) Get to know the neighbours, feel like they are contributing to something greater than themselves. Education will become freely accessable to everyone through the internet and community programs, people will begin to crave knowledge and love learning. With the destruction of industry, energy and resource use will fall drastically and we will have more than enough resources to lift billions out of poverty and eventually to global equality. Clean energy tech will no longer be economically unviable. Intellectual property rights will be abolished, any new tech or knowledge will become global wealth and lift the lives of all. They will call it a new world order because no one will dare call it communism…
@Gordo
It’s true we take water as free and for granted. The oil industry is one of the biggest water consumer. In the USA for barrel of oil extracted you have to pollute 10 barrels of water. It’s indeed a scary statistic when you thinks about the BP fiasxo. Max and Stacy love to speak about CO2. The squandering of water is a much more serious problem, specially in dry places like Alberta and the Middle East.
@Illinois
I live in Québec. I presume you live in Illinois Brandon ?
Obama quite rightly pointed out, is not the enemy, You are. How does one think about being the Fink, how does think about beann the Feeenk.

The water problem in Alberta is critical.
@wahrheit…
Obama is just doing what needs to be done, and that is making sure that this system collapses so completely that we can force a reset… And this sets me up nicely for your link to Ambrose Evans-Pritchards article…
As money is given its value by the share of surplus energy available within an economy, energy scarcity is required in order to give money value and thus, maintain the profit system as the means to distribute this energy surplus…
If Jesus came down tomorrow and gave us the technology to provide clean, abundant and sustainable free energy for all, the world would fall into complete chaos…
Until an economic system is introduced that is free from profit and which distributes resources equally to all at sustainable rates, we will never have abundant energy… To put it another way, abundant energy would mean no limits to resource extraction and in a world where most people see wealth as a mansion, a bright red ferrari and a garbage truck to come haul away your waste every week, the end result would not be pretty…
Oh, and there is order in chaos, Obama is not the enemy. He must play by the rules of the game but the means will justify the end… My two cents anyway

The potentail is there. BUT…….. Shale gaz is very polluting. I have been reading a lot about horror stories in the USA about poisonous contanimation and an explosion of cancers. I wouldn’t like to have a gas shale rig on my property. The water is a real problem. It’s a long term play and besides that natural gas prices are in the dumps. The guy is a liar. I would be very cautious.

Dr Chang, who moved to the UK in 1986 as a 23-year-old graduate student, argues that an emphasis on equality of opportunity is futile – likening life to a race which everyone starts at the same time, but where some have weights strapped to their legs – and that we should instead work towards greater equality of outcome.
“equality of outcome” – Very Interesting thinking but who decides when we are equal in our outcomes? Lovely Rita the outcome maid ?

I don’t think that it is the product of product of capitalism. I think it’s the product of corruption and fascism when the government and the big companies become one and the same.
I agree it’s the product of oversimplification that only money without moralism can solve anything. markets without rules which are enforced are no free markets like a game whitout a referee is no game.

noyo? oh well.
@Snoot,
Yo do entertain.
When are people going to face the cold hard mathematical facts? Capitalism was never sustainable simply because the workforce that produces goods and services of economic value never receives equal energy compensation (wages) for their energy input (labor)… How was capitalism ever going to provide for the needs of all people when the goods and sevices workers produce have a greater monetary value than their labor? Capitalism was always a ponzi scheme and its finished, END OF STORY… Paul, Faber and Schiff can’t save capitalism no matter how much gold they throw at it because there are just too many people needing to sell there labor to the highest bidder but not enough energy and natural resources in the world to produce any more fucking crap that we don’t need. Didn’t someone by the name of Karl Marx explain all this this over a hundred years ago or something? Ooops, did I say Marx? Honestly, I’m not a thought criminal… I’ll go burn all my books right now ok? I’ll even join the tea party and listen to Alex Jones everyday…

How to Kill Goyim and Influence People: Israeli Rabbis Defend Book’s Shocking Religious Defense of Killing Non-Jews (with Video)
A rabbinical guidebook for killing non-Jews has sparked an uproar in Israel and exposed the power a bunch of genocidal theocrats wield over the government.

Petitions by Change.org|Get Widget|Start a Petition » When I went into the Jewish religious book emporium, Pomeranz, in central Jerusalem to inquire about the availability of a book called Torat Ha’Melech, or the King’s Torah, a commotion immediately ensued. “Are you sure you want it?” the owner, M. Pomeranz, asked me half-jokingly. “The Shabak [Israel's internal security service] is going to want a word with you if you do.” As customers stopped browsing and began to stare in my direction, Pomeranz pointed to a security camera affixed to a wall. “See that?” he told me. “It goes straight to the Shabak!”

How to kill a goyim and influence people. Boy. What’s wrong with these people ? They don’t remember their history ? They should.
“Lord, Keep your arm around my shoulder and your hand over my mouth.”
I found this article very encouraging. It’s about time we accepted the fact that capitalism is broken and start talking about alternatives.
I don’t buy the argument that the current situation is not capitalism because it doesn’t adhere to an ideal model of free-market capitalism, therefore we must get back to so-called true capitalism. The entire point is that the current abysmal situation is the product of capitalism and proof of its inherent faults.
The word “brain-washed” is not ideal. A generation of Americans, still very much alive, are fearful of even mentioning socialism or communism because of years of witch hunts. Various tactics have been used to successfully remove the teaching of other economic and political models from academic curricula in the U.S., leaving the younger generation at a disadvantage in discussing alternatives. Not brain-washing, but very targeted and deliberate actions have made free-market capitalism appear inevitable here.

Blessed Anna Maria Taigi (died 1837): “described to me the great ordeal ahead. Rome would be battered by revolutions…Millions of men would die by the sword in war and civil strife, other millions would perish in unforeseen death. Then entire nations would return to the unity of the Church, and many Turks, Pagans and Jews would be converted and their fervour cover with confusion the original Christians. In one word she told me that our Lord was intending to cleanse the world and His Church…” (Bessieres A. Wife, Mother and Mystic (Blessed Anna Maria Taigi). Nihil Obstat: Carlos Davis, S.T.L. Imprimatur: E Morrough Bernard
Venerable Bartholomew Holzhauser (died 1658):…”Are we not to fear, during this period, that the Mohammedans will come again, working out their sinister schemes against the Latin (Roman Catholic) Church.
Old Saxon Prophecy. “The seven-headed city, now more admirable than Jerusalem, shall be a place more desolate than Jerusalem. The Dog shall enter Germany but shall afterwards forsake his master and choose for himself a new man, whereby Scripture shall be fulfilled. This Dog shall signify the Turk which shall forsake his Mohammed and choose unto him the name Christian…But after all these things the end of the world shall approach, and there shall be heavey and pitiful days.”
Brother Louis Rocco (19th century). “Terrible wars will rage all over Europe. God has long been patient with the corruption of morals; half of mankind He will destroy. Russia will witness many outrages. Great cities and small towns alike will be destroyed in a bloody revolution that will cause the death of half the population. In Istanbul (Constantinople) the Cross will replace the half-moon of Islamism, and Jerusalem will be the seat of a King. The southern Slavs will form a great Catholic Empire and drive out of Europe the Turks (Mohammedans), who will withdraw to North Africa and subsequently embrace the Catholic faith.”
HERE IS A PROPHECY ABOUT THE COMING GREAT MONARCH
Rudolph Gekner (died 1675). “A great prince of the North with a most powerful army will traverse all Europe, uproot all republics, and exterminate all rebels. His sword moved by Divine power will most valiantly defend the Church of Jesus Christ. He will combat on behalf of the true orthodox faith, and shall subdue to his dominion the Mahometan Empire. A new pastor of the universal church will come from the shore (of Dalmatia) through a celestial prodigy, and in simplicity of heart adorned with the doctrines of Jesus Christ. Peace will come to the world.” (Cited in Connor, Edward. Prophecy for Today. Imprimatur + A.J. Willinger, Bishop of Monterey-Fresno.

Just watched some tosser describe Bernanke’s actions as “magic”. Black or White? I like the Chang fellow. And when anyone speaks of the “free market” LOL in mainstream discourse we should be gentler. Since the same socioeconomic phenomenon can be labeled (by Max) “gulag-casino”, it is OK for a staight dude to diss it. If Murray is right his notion of a free market is going to roll no matter what the bozos do.
@F. Beard
ahahahah that was funny!
What’s the difference between capitalism and communism?
In communism they nationalize the banks and
then push them to bankruptcy then become capitalists.

In capitalism they push the bank to bankruptcy and

Very good piece by Ha-Joon Chang and I think it concurs for a great deal with the Social liberalistic models in Sweden and the Netherlands. if you pay a lot of taxes you also earn a lot is the tought.
The American system is long overdue and has been corrupted from the top down. Now it’s eating itself away end let’s hope it collapses soon without causing much more harm than it allready did in the rest of the world.

sorry, was taking a snipe at you more a shot against a set of beliefs I held adamantly (still wander into it from time to time) in being an extreme Determinist…also I do the brainwashing trick too… just to buttress my arguements in favor of Determinism, ahhh Gramsci how I have missused cultural Hegomony in my life….yet in crushing some of the extreme Material Determanism in my life I have incorprated to much Post Structuralism (basically saying nothing can be truly SET)…which hampers me in a differently but has lead me into a similiar position in doubting the feasability of altering patterns, if they are fixed or continially shifting both positions make what I would like to do possible ( altering the system so it is more humane)
sorry was taking a pot shot, just was bored and your comment fostered a bit of intellectual stimulation
He would debunk the Internet? Ahem, are we sure he’s no Luddite?
conditioning is an emergent behavior(insidious),..brainwashing is the process of over riding and extinguishing afore mentioned processes,…
The short answer to the question of “brainwashing” is yes.
The longer answer is a bit more complicated, but there’s no “brainwashing” involved. The way the human brain works, brainwashing isn’t required. All you have to do is institutionalize a particular idea of what a “free market” is, and all the brains that share that idea will work to make sure that is the kind of “free market” that results.
It’s really ridiculous; those marine turbines are truly a solution in search of a real problem except there isn’t one.
Bird choppers aren’t enough, greenies want whale and fish choppers too:
Swarms of marine turbines could ‘tap the Gulf Stream’
chArles,….” just don’t say behavior patterns are SET, they ain’t”
And this is where “brainwashing” comes into play,…thanks for the explanation,…saves me the time and effort,….: )
@ Y’all
What’s up with the gold spike? Total BS? Or a method of keeping big players out. Joe Schmoe buys a few ounces and watches it get killed (5%), but a player goes for it and a wall rises up (think Palestine), to change his mind. Just thinkin’.
I had meant to add that I refer to my humble laptop as the Book of Knowledge.
That we overate having all of man’s accumalated knowledge instantly at our fingertips, should probably have left that one out if I were him.
How about this then http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00tj525
@ Dedo
Conditioning can be broken. there is several methods to do this which have been show to be effective….change the patterns of behavior for an animal is possible with effort and work…you may not wish to keep the cocker spanial from urinating on your rug, but don’t offer that it is part of is nature and has been conditioned for 50k years to engage in this behavior
you don’t want to change the system because, it benifits you, you have grown accumstomed to it, it would take effort you don’t wish to assert whatever…cool all valid reasons, just don’t say behavior patterns are SET, they ain’t
Speaking of the Matrix: http://www.theonion.com/articles/smart-qualified-people-behind-the-scenes-keeping-a,17954/
Brainwashing is quite different from “conditioning”,…
We are all conditioned to believe,from an early age, our peers have our best interests at heart.
So the need to question the efficacy of corrupt systems in and of themselves at later stages of life, is a complete waste of time and energy(which of course is intentional)
Conclusion: Chang’s studies are time wasting thought exercises,….
AGAIN, very naughty of the editors to whinge about free market capitalism, so called, when they in fact know that a free market’s most important feature is that it isn’t forced to depend on a currency monopoly, and that this feature is most responsible for creating the GFC … whilst maybe most Independent British readers are clueless enough to not pick up on this point, don’t expect people frequenting blogs such as this to be so naive, naughty naughty !
I’m reminded on one of my favourite quotes:
“Twenty-five years of repetition have created an almost Pavlovian reflex that equates “free markets” with “good” Willem Buiter might call it “cognitive capture.” I think of it as closer to brainwashing.” – Danny Schecter
Unfortunately most people do think it’s inevitable, we’ve been exposed to decades of being told it’s either capitalism or communism and now most people believe we’re just left with capitalism so they put up with it for lack of any workable alternative. Of course there are plenty of alternatives but how any of them are going to be given mass exposure, especially given a wholly corporatised, unquestioning media, I have no idea. I’ve been a professional campaigner and activist for years and despite the odd win here and there I’ve been fighting a losing battle. I honestly dread where this is all going to end. It’s not going to be pretty.

What part of government backed fractional reserve banking cartel in a government enforced monopoly money supply sounds like a “free market”?!
