Stacy Summary: Oh boy, there was one Canadian who did the whole ‘stick to what you know’ shtick when I pointed out the numbers on income and prices in Canada suggested a bubble there, or at least in some parts of the country. Anyway, looks like others are also expecting a Minsky moment soon.

@Ray in Vancouver
Correct. But you forgot to add the homelessness and drug problems in Vancouver. People are starting to realize that maybe it isn’t such a great idea to pay $1,000,000 for a condo just to have to live next to crack whores. Aside from the real estate prices, Vancouver has much higher social problem issues relative to its population than any other city in North America. It’s so bad that a friend of mine has come up with a phrase to describe the government’s reaction to the problem: Social Industrial Complex. i.e. the government is creating a massive industry around the problem instead of fixing the problem. It’s just to big to fix, so why not rape the taxpayers, build up a huge industry around it and keep the party going?
Here, enjoy:

To go home, owning 5 apartments

Yeah well. Some of us here have been waiting for this a long time. The housing bubble really ballooned when Stephen Harper was made Prime Minister. He started deregulating the banks and the real estate industry. He invited AIG into the previously highly regulated home insurance market. He introduced the 40 year no down payment fixed rate mortgage. He took 75 billion dollars off the backs of the banks (equivalent to Fannie and Freddie bailout). He ordered the CMHC to massively its holdings of securitized homes.
Meanwhile he is going all over the world getting praised for being such a great regulator of the economy. Astonishingly many people here and elsewhere actually believe that propaganda.
@Youri
It’s part of the eugenic plan. Starve the old pensioners of any significant yield and return on investments to exterminate them. Robbing the old to pay Lord of the Flies, Lloyd Blanfien bonuses. USA is a Nazi country. Unfortunately so is the rest of the world. No place to hide or safe investment.

About the incident in Silver Springs, Md.:
“The real Eco-Extremism is neo-Malthusian paranoia about exploding populations and resource scarcity.”
I posted this comment just over a day before the hostage incident at the Discovery Channel headquarters. Malthusianism has ever been a tool of both wings of the elite to cleanse or erase the undesirables. The fight against immigration, welfare for the poor and healthcare for the poor are all Malthusian battles. Libertarians implicitly champion Malthusianism(Socially Planned Pop. Control) with the same breath they damn other forms of Social Planning(cf. Hayek, Road to Serfdom). Libertarian Economic Theory’s solipsism begs so many other hypocrisies. (Private Property, Incorporation and, the holiest of all holies, Markets are all socially planned and impossible without a State.)
The fear of minority birth rates in the early 20th Century led to the creation of Planned Parenthood. So the left and right often find common cause when it comes to the poor. They both agree the poor should breed less or just disappear.
Israel’s West Bank cleansing and the Gaza open air prison are Malthusian measures to limit Palestinian birth rates and population growth.
Smoking post-coital cigarette and giggling at the tea plate sized purple bruise prosody of Snoot. “Zephyr Wind”— the redundancy–Zephyr is the West Wind….Too little education often leads to superfluous words. cf. Islamophobes and “Sharia Law”……
Reagan’s policies were left of Obama. As Tao correctly stated, “Obama talks left and acts right.”(paraphrase) He even one ups Dubya with his Assassination Warrants without due process on US Citizens he deems are a “terrorist threat”. When a President can issue a death penalty on a US Citizen without due process of law he practices the ancient Imperium of Roman Emperors and the King’s Divine Right over his subjects in Absolute Monarchy. Greenwald’s work on the continuing disintegration of Civil Liberties in the US should be required reading.
I hope everyone has the best day they’ve ever had until the next one.

@Tao Jonesing
Why do you have to turn this into a race issue?
I am an educated man. I run my own business. I have money and zero debt. I have lived and worked in many different countries and continue to this very day. I have traveled extensively throughout Europe and Asia. I consider myself very well read. I am in an interracial marriage and have multiracial children. And I have had incredible experiences in my life–professional, recreational, good, and bad.
That said, and point being, when I see turds like you spew this race garbage and continue to throw labels around like a junior high school kid after his first social studies class it irks me.
The continued pursuit of freedom and liberty is not some ideology or theology, it’s the natural course of nature! If it leads to Earth’s demise than so be it because this is what nature intended. You can try and hijack the Discovery channel if you want, because some novel has twisted your reality of what it is to be human, but all it will get you is closer to what nature has already intended for you….
Godbless me? Maybe, but I tend to think they I got where I am because of my two feet, one brain, and my continued search for freedom and liberty.
@Serf David,
“Dude, why do you continue to spew your nonsense about Libertarians and the Tea Party?”
Dude, why do you call yourself “Sir” when you are clearly a willing serf?
Modern middle class (and lower) libertarian followers pursue policies that impoverish themselves, all in the name of a form of “liberty” that enslaves them. The Tea Party is predominantly a bunch of seniors who distrust “the blacks” and think “the blacks” want to take what is rightfully theirs.
All I can say is follow your bliss. Doing so will almost assuredly benefit me as a member of the rentier class. God bless (even though I think God is a complete fiction).
@Sir David,
“The Tea Party is right of Pat Buchanan?!?!? ”
Yes. Pat is a true paleocon. He’s also a Catholic, which means he is not an evangelical of the Tea Party variety. Personally, I love the guy and his honesty.
You really don’t understand the dividing lines of modern American conservatism do you? Back in the ’60s the Birchers accused Catholics of being the agents of foreign governments.

WASHINGTON – Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is set to appear before a panel investigating the financial crisis to give his take on the meltdown and his views on potential systemwide risks posed by large financial institutions.
Bernanke led the economy through the tumultuous months of the most severe recession since the 1930s, as the Federal Reserve took extraordinary measures to inject hundreds of billions into the battered financial system.

@Marc,
I’m just bummed out.
@WL,
” I would have Obama left of Reagan and the Tea Partiers close to Reagan Republicans.”
I was a Reagan fan boy, and I could not possibly vote for a Tea Party candidate. The big difference is the Tea Party tends to be evangelical christianist. There are ideological libertarian followers mixed in (and I sympathize for them, actually), but the Tea Party is well right of Reagan.
Think of it this way: Pat Buchanan was right of Reagan, and the Tea Party is right of Pat Buchanan. Reagan used evangelicals and Birchers as tools, the Tea Party are the tools.
“However, I see two dimensions, left/right and Anarchy/Statism. Both the left and right have moved toward Statism since Reagan, that is why Obamas actions are similar to Bush.”
Those are good dimensions to acknowledge. Very consistent with the “political compass” website (google it and have fun). Neoliberalism (aka what modern folks consider as libertarianism) is, in actuality, a statist beast that is riding to popular appeal on the false premise of individual liberty.
The reason that Obama is channelling Bush is that he, also, is a neoliberal. Both major political parties in the American system are led by neoliberals. Only the bases differ. The Republican base is much more energized and cohesive. The Democratic base has buyer’s remorse.
I was in Washington, D.C. a couple of months before the election in a room full of lawyers from a very influential D.C. law firm that were all very enthusiastic about Obama. They were quite surprised when I, as the client, told them that their faith in Obama was woefully misplaced. I told them flat out that Obama had put Social Security on the table. They disagreed. I wonder what they think now?
I still wish that McCain would have nominated Colin Powell or anybody other than Palin as VP. I could have voted for that sad shell of a man.
“Also, both left and right can be Fascist.”
Again, no. Fascism was and always is a nationalist, anti-intellectual and anti-liberal movement. Since liberals are always classified as nation-hating leftists and typically supported by intellectuals, the left is ruled out of being labeled fascists. That doesn’t mean that you can’t have leftist authoritarianism or leftist totalitarianism, which can be just as bad but in a different way.
You can say that I’m splitting hairs again, but I can argue that you’re just saying that everybody can be an overbearing asshole. If you want to simplify things to that level, I’m with you. Until then, I’m all for precision of language.
No NO No

@WL,
re: right v. center v. left
The issue is not so much orientation as it is movement politics. The center, however you define it, is never a “movement.” There has not been a left movement in decades because it devolved into identity politics in the 60s and 70s after a few decades of being on top. There is a clear right movement, and it’s best represented by the Tea Party and it is hard right (i.e., people who were considered conservative Republicans in the Reagan era need not apply).
What’s happened is that the left and center are determined almost entirely by how close they are to the right, and the right keeps moving rightward.
If I were to identify who I think as the “Left” these days, it would be people like Glenn Greenwald, Jane Hamsher, Dennis Kucinich and Bernie Sanders. Why? Because they believe in civil liberty, equal justice and the idea that government can play a positive role in balancing individual liberty and corporate power. With the exception of Sanders, these people are essentially left-leaning libertarians in the traditional sense.
I guess that leaves the neoliberals (modern libertarians) and neocons as the center.
How fuckin’ scary is that? The “liberal media” sure has done a bang up job.

“If Obama is right of center, “who is the center”
By today’s standards, Ronald Reagan would define the center.
If you judge Obama by what he says, he’s left of center. If you judge Obama by what he does, he’s right of center (i.e., Reagan). If you compare Obama’s policies to Bush’s (abusing civil liberties, corporate giveaways, etc.), an objective person would be hard-pressed to find a real difference.

“The Chinese plate looked very blue,
And wailed, “Oh, dear! what shall we do!”"
The Chinese plate is living on purloined innocence. Being a sort of objectified member of the ‘family’, he has merely absorbed the narrative from the meowing and barking which proceeded the ‘spat’. Indeed, one could say that as mercantilist interest object, the plate is the most necessary object in the room: but not moreso than the Dutch Clock. Both dog and cat regard the plate as an identifying mechanism. They are not fighting OVER the plate but fighting INFRONTOF the plate: as we see represented by seeded interest from the inception of capital gain.
And being objectified, wailing and covering the face of his glory is a humble act. Do you think he feels a bit of empathy for the unlikely duel?
I mentioned left and right as I’ve been observing the narrative spun by the Dutch Clock in hourly chimes, and I think I hear a bark and a mew.

come WL all this proves is if you sacrafice enough sheep to the conservative deity eventually some self indetified Libreal/enviromentalist will go off the tracks…the record still stands in America there has not be a recorded case of Left wing violence against a human being in over 20 years…and ELF don’t count… Property isn’t a person, I know that confuses y’all Libertarians sometimes…not to say the left didn’t play with fire…the folks with my political bent destroyed our entire belief system at the turn of the last century by advocating “individual action” and “guns and dynomite”
but ALL every single action doesn’t equal a single year of the Klans actions, trust me those folks probably hated the left more than some of the ayn rand disciples

Meat sharp price rises have attracted speculative money http://forum.prisonplanet.com/index.php?topic=185312.0
Global meat prices have hit a 20-year high as robust demand from emerging countries has coincided with a drop in production by exporters such as the US and Australia, fuelling concerns about rising food inflation.
“There has been sustained demand from Asia and from the Middle East for both beef and lamb,” said Pedro Arias, a livestock economist at the FAO in Rome, echoing a widely held view in the industry. “But the traders have not been able to satisfy that demand because herds have been curtailed.”
The sharp price rises have attracted speculative money to what is otherwise a niche market in Chicago. The number of outstanding contracts at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange for live cattle and lean hogs futures and options – both benchmark derivatives – has jumped by nearly a third since the start of the year.
But industry executives, traders and analysts said the increase in prices was not due to the inflows of hot money, but rather supply and demand factors. Meat production has stagnated in top exporting countries as livestock farmers suffered a series of misfortunes from severe droughts in Australia and Latin America, to low prices in the early 2000s and record high feeding costs.
At the same time, the growing middle class in emerging countries from China to Brazil is demanding a richer protein diet, further straining the industry’s supply.
“Food inflation is one of the main causes of build-up in inflation we are seeing this year,” he said.

James Jay Lee mentally disturbed radical environmentalist shooter at Discovery Channel blog demands
This will be a nightmare for the Left. THIS GUY IS A NUTJOB
http://www.savetheplanetprotest.com/
The Discovery Channel MUST broadcast to the world their commitment to save the planet and to do the following IMMEDIATELY:
1. The Discovery Channel and it’s affiliate channels MUST have daily television programs at prime time slots based on Daniel Quinn’s “My Ishmael” pages 207-212 where solutions to save the planet would be done in the same way as the Industrial Revolution was done, by people building on each other’s inventive ideas. Focus must be given on how people can live WITHOUT giving birth to more filthy human children since those new additions continue pollution and are pollution. A game show format contest would be in order. Perhaps also forums of leading scientists who understand and agree with the Malthus-Darwin science and the problem of human overpopulation. Do both. Do all until something WORKS and the natural world starts improving and human civilization building STOPS and is reversed! MAKE IT INTERESTING SO PEOPLE WATCH AND APPLY SOLUTIONS!!!!
2. All programs on Discovery Health-TLC must stop encouraging the birth of any more parasitic human infants and the false heroics behind those actions. In those programs’ places, programs encouraging human sterilization and infertility must be pushed. All former pro-birth programs must now push in the direction of stopping human birth, not encouraging it.
3. All programs promoting War and the technology behind those must cease. There is no sense in advertising weapons of mass-destruction anymore. Instead, talk about ways to disassemble civilization and concentrate the message in finding SOLUTIONS to solving global military mechanized conflict. Again, solutions solutions instead of just repeating the same old wars with newer weapons. Also, keep out the fraudulent peace movements. They are liars and fakes and had no real intention of ending the wars. ALL OF THEM ARE FAKE! On one hand, they claim they want the wars to end, on the other, they are demanding the human population increase. World War II had 2 Billion humans and after that war, the people decided that tripling the population would assure peace. WTF??? STUPIDITY! MORE HUMANS EQUALS MORE WAR!
4. Civilization must be exposed for the filth it is. That, and all its disgusting religious-cultural roots and greed. Broadcast this message until the pollution in the planet is reversed and the human population goes down! This is your obligation. If you think it isn’t, then get hell off the planet! Breathe Oil! It is the moral obligation of everyone living otherwise what good are they??
5. Immigration: Programs must be developed to find solutions to stopping ALL immigration pollution and the anchor baby filth that follows that. Find solutions to stopping it. Call for people in the world to develop solutions to stop it completely and permanently. Find solutions FOR these countries so they stop sending their breeding populations to the US and the world to seek jobs and therefore breed more unwanted pollution babies. FIND SOLUTIONS FOR THEM TO STOP THEIR HUMAN GROWTH AND THE EXPORTATION OF THAT DISGUSTING FILTH! (The first world is feeding the population growth of the Third World and those human families are going to where the food is! They must stop procreating new humans looking for nonexistant jobs!)
6. Find solutions for Global Warming, Automotive pollution, International Trade, factory pollution, and the whole blasted human economy. Find ways so that people don’t build more housing pollution which destroys the environment to make way for more human filth! Find solutions so that people stop breeding as well as stopping using Oil in order to REVERSE Global warming and the destruction of the planet!
7. Develop shows that mention the Malthusian sciences about how food production leads to the overpopulation of the Human race. Talk about Evolution. Talk about Malthus and Darwin until it sinks into the stupid people’s brains until they get it!!
8. Saving the Planet means saving what’s left of the non-human Wildlife by decreasing the Human population. That means stopping the human race from breeding any more disgusting human babies! You’re the media, you can reach enough people. It’s your resposibility because you reach so many minds!!!
9. Develop shows that will correct and dismantle the dangerous US world economy. Find solutions for their disasterous Ponzi-Casino economy before they take the world to another nuclear war.
10. Stop all shows glorifying human birthing on all your channels and on TLC. Stop Future Weapons shows or replace the dialogue condemning the people behind these developments so that the shows become exposes rather than advertisements of Arms sales and development!
11. You’re also going to find solutions for unemployment and housing. All these unemployed people makes me think the US is headed toward more war.
Humans are the most destructive, filthy, pollutive creatures around and are wrecking what’s left of the planet with their false morals and breeding culture.
For every human born, ACRES of wildlife forests must be turned into farmland in order to feed that new addition over the course of 60 to 100 YEARS of that new human’s lifespan! THIS IS AT THE EXPENSE OF THE FOREST CREATURES!!!! All human procreation and farming must cease!
It is the responsiblity of everyone to preserve the planet they live on by not breeding any more children who will continue their filthy practices. Children represent FUTURE catastrophic pollution whereas their parents are current pollution. NO MORE BABIES! Population growth is a real crisis. Even one child born in the US will use 30 to a thousand times more resources than a Third World child. It’s like a couple are having 30 babies even though it’s just one! If the US goes in this direction maybe other countries will too!
Also, war must be halted. Not because it’s morally wrong, but because of the catastrophic environmental damage modern weapons cause to other creatures. FIND SOLUTIONS JUST LIKE THE BOOK SAYS! Humans are supposed to be inventive. INVENT, DAMN YOU!!
The world needs TV shows that DEVELOP solutions to the problems that humans are causing, not stupify the people into destroying the world. Not encouraging them to breed more environmentally harmful humans.
Saving the environment and the remaning species diversity of the planet is now your mindset. Nothing is more important than saving them. The Lions, Tigers, Giraffes, Elephants, Froggies, Turtles, Apes, Raccoons, Beetles, Ants, Sharks, Bears, and, of course, the Squirrels.
The humans? The planet does not need humans.
You MUST KNOW the human population is behind all the pollution and problems in the world, and YET you encourage the exact opposite instead of discouraging human growth and procreation. Surely you MUST ALREADY KNOW this!
I want Discovery Communications to broadcast on their channels to the world their new program lineup and I want proof they are doing so. I want the new shows started by asking the public for inventive solution ideas to save the planet and the remaining wildlife on it.
These are the demands and sayings of Lee.
one of my favorite writers in proving Marx was mistaken about Historical Materialism, (Rudolph Rocker) recounts how Spain allowed their own collective prejudices to get the best of em when they overturned Moorish rule (the Moor’s had imported a greater level of teck in regaurds to textiles) the Spainards smashed this and went back to the original means of production, which was just barely out of the agrarian means of production…point for this ramble (besides I’m bored at work) is that people are for whatever reason unable to overcome some ingrain attitudes/prejudices, no matter what one could bring to show them…a dominant narrative is hard to shake
also the Spainard empire recovered and ruled the world after this folly, then it stumbled upon cheap wealth (raping the New World) and where it once fielded the dominant Navy in the world…the British were able in two generations to overcome this, my boy Rocker would argue as do I that the reason was they had learned a “get rich quick scheme” (the old smash and grab where dispite it’s brutality British rule tried to self replicate itself around the globe thus creating some semblance of new wealth)…the current dominant economic parigdim is in a similiar place…all they know how to do is to inflate bubbles…the laborous task it takes to create REAL wealth (or REAL EMPIRES) is to time consumming and tedious….so they are sitting around awaiting the next bubble, I purdy sure Godot will show before it does
please forgive ramble bored at work

Anyway, the Canadian market is not in a bubble. It is extremely diverse as this is a very big country. Vancouver is an extremely unique housing market for many reasons and has been very expensive for 40 years. Sure, there may be corrections but no bubble. 10-15% at most. Comparing Canada to the US is apples and oranges.
Some points about Vancouver..
Money comes from offshore, external wealth, cash buyers. Half my neighbors are from offshore and nobody has a mortgage.
Vancouver is the place everyone in Canada would like to live, if they could afford it. For the weather. Wealthy retiree inflow.
Geographically limited, mountains Oceans and US border. Can only grow East. Less desirable
No mortgage interest deductability. Incentive to pay down
Capital Gains exempt on Primary home, used as long term investment
Prices too high to generate cash flow on investment property without a huge amount down.
High development costs and rising
Low property taxes. 1.3 million home would be 5000 dollars. That would be triple in California
Flipping home tough with high transaction costs
Tightened mortgage app regulations and mortgage Insurance qualifications
Massive inflow of pension rich Government workers..
A recently implemented tax on new homes has pulled forward sales to beat the tax, so a slowdown is expected.

Brussels wavers not use clearing houses for over-the-counter derivatives trades
European companies look set for a victory in their efforts to persuade regulators not to force them to use clearing houses for over-the-counter derivatives trades after the European Commission proposed that they be given exemptions from sweeping regulation to clamp down on such markets.
The move, contained in a draft regulation, comes after months of lobbying by large industrial companies like Siemens, Eon, Lufthansa and Rolls-Royce.
A clearing house stands between two parties to a trade, ensuring completion even if one party defaults.
Companies use OTC derivatives to manage routine business risks – such as exposure to changes in currency moves and interest rates. They successfully lobbied in the US against being forced to use cleared OTC derivatives.
However Brussels now proposes setting two thresholds that will determine whether non-financial users of OTC derivatives need to use clearing. The draft proposal, seen by the Financial Times, says both thresholds “need to be defined taking into account the systemic relevance of the sum of net positions and exposures by counterparty per class of derivatives”.

A Minsky moment is a situation in which investors who have borrowed too much are forced to sell even good assets to pay back their loans.[1] In economic terms, it is the point in a credit cycle or business cycle when investors have cash flow problems due to spiraling debt they have incurred in order to finance speculative investments. At this point, a major selloff begins due to the fact that no counterparty can be found to bid at the high asking prices previously quoted, leading to a sudden and precipitous collapse in market clearing asset prices and a sharp drop in market liquidity.[1] from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minsky_moment

Remove ANY monetart priveleges to the bankers. Lending should be possible but it’s vital to remove them the right to create money with credit.
Welcome to the next Ireland. Lucky for us that we have gold, hydo-electricity, minerals galore, forest. land and oil and gas. It’s an ugly bubble. That’s for sure.
Borrowing from the counterfeiting cartel causes bubbles; that should be obvious. With 100% reserve lending, only existing money could be lent. Interest rates would rise but housing prices would drop and people could earn a decent interest rate on their savings. This is, BTW, how most people think banks work. If they only knew.
