I’ve been trying to convince countries like Iceland and Ireland to offer economic citizenship similar to what’s on offer at Dominica and Nevis St. Kitts. I spoke with David McWilliams about this idea and I’ve spoken with a Swiss banker I know who says he knows thousands of American citizens who would snap these up in a heartbeat. Offering a US passport for $500,000 (right to live in US, but let’s call it what it is, a gateway to the US passport) is a bit rich considering the hundreds of thousands of Americans who, if given a chance, would swap their US citizenship for some other country for a lot less. Or, what about letting Americans themselves sell their US citizenships on some eBay type site to see what the market is for a US passport. My guess is that the market would clear at a much lower price (and going lower every month).
