Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement

In October 2007, the United States, the European Community, Switzerland, and Japan simultaneously announced that they would negotiate a new intellectual property enforcement treaty the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement or ACTA. Australia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico, Jordan, Morocco, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada have joined the negotiations. Although the proposed treaty’s title might suggest that the agreement deals only with counterfeit physical goods (such as medicines) what little information has been made available publicly by negotiating governments about the content of the treaty makes it clear that it will have a far broader scope and in particular will deal with new tools targeting “Internet distribution and information technology”.

ACTA is worth a revolution in your country.
The way that this ‘treaty’ will be and already is being forced onto us, IN SECRET, means that they do not trust to get this enacted via normal ways (bottom up), so they try top down.
And what, my dear friends, is the benefit of entities like EU and US, etc? Less bureaucrats to convince/bribe than to convince each member state…
ACTA is only there to serve the corporate interests. Not your and my interests. It limits your and my freedoms and broadens the copyright and IP tyranny already on us.
So what can we do to fight this ACTA demon?

Treaties are how international law supersedes Constitutional rights and sidesteps consent-of-the-governed. We have been decrying ACTA, (crafted in back rooms in super-secret), like a three-alarm-fire, for years.

Consider that recently, DARPA, has been reporting about working on technology that notifies the authors of Word documents and .PDF files, anytime someone opens one. It is not a stretch to realize that they will eventually employ the same scheme to all apps, movie, etc. It will virtually all, eventually, “phone home”, anytime anything is opened.

And in case you missed it, Cory Doctorow’s keynote at 28C3 was about the upcoming war on general-purpose computing:

“there is no known general-purpose computer that can execute all the programs we can think of except the naughty ones”

And just how long before the Supreme Court even outlaws lending libraries, when they too, are held to violate the newly all-venerated, most Holy Sacred copyright law?
