We’re dealing with #2, Historic Drought. The other related items #1, #3, and #4 are consequent to drought.
Drought levels do seem to be more severe this year than any year over the last decade. However, it also looks like there are odd stair-step like patterns in the drought level over the past couple of years that have increased the drought levels to unusual highs this year. This data is available at the Drought Monitor Statistics page for archived data back to 2000. There appears to be a 4 year periodicity and the current drought falls near one of the drought peaks. We seem to be at a drought peak according to this data and will be heading into a wet spell over the next couple of years if the trend is correct.
In two years, it would be interesting to check this again.
