Storm of the Century Sandy in Photos: Sharks in NJ, Manhattan Underwater, Con Ed Explodes

The biggest and most destructive storm to ever hit the US East coast has left sharks swimming in New Jersey neighborhoods, Manhattan dark and underwater, the Con Edison power plant going supernova, the subway system ready for U-boats, and threatens to drop the 1% back into the 99%.

Unbelievable photos of the shocking destruction here:

    more recent details.

As discussed by nuclear expert Arnie Gundersen, there is NO backup diesel generator for the spent fuel pool at Oyster Creek.

I once visited the control room of a local nuclear power plant. Part of the tour was a view of the diesel engine powered backup generator.

Do we have pics of the floating cars in Wall st or is this a modern myth?
Does this prove that the USA is a third world country?
I mean: their financial center is almost unprotected from a storm.
And yes, Sandy might be big, but even with a smaller storm the damage would have been avoidable for a big part.
Do we need to send aid to the USA to build some good levees etc?
    (yes, I am Dutch)

    hi
just in case anyone is worried about the nuclear plants .. seems to be ok sort of..

arnold gundersen has done a new interview later than democrasy now so he has some reflections to add

    Duration: 13.48 mins

    Fairewinds

In this special edition question & answer podcast, Gundersen and Hurley discuss what effects Hurricane Sandy had on U.S. nuclear power plants, especially Oyster Creek. Gundersen explains how spent fuel pools are not configured to be cooled with diesel power in the event of a loss of offsite power. Oyster Creek and several other nuclear power plants did lose offsite power and Thomson Reuters reports that they may use fire pumps to cool the pools.

hope that helps to reasure everyone.. but it was a close thing for something slightly worse to happen.. we need to consider our energy future in the uk ..

no windmills because they are not pretty? says the energy minister
    what a plonker..

    stay safe y`all
    peace

That shark image is undoubtedly fake. No self respecting real shark would be caught associating with all the little wanna be sharks that “work” on Wall Street.
