The public has started a petition asking the White House to investigate comments made by MPAA CEO Chris Dodd a few days ago on Fox News. Closing a tumultuous week of wide protest against PIPA and SOPA – two MPAA backed anti-piracy bills – Dodd threatened to stop the cash-flow to politicians who dare to take a stand against pro-Hollywood legislation. Clear bribery, the petition claims, and already thousands agree.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld a federal law that restored copyright protection to works that had entered the public domain.
By a 6-to-2 vote, the justices rejected arguments based on the First Amendment and the Constitution’s copyright clause, saying that the public domain was not “a category of constitutional significance” and that copyright protections might be expanded even if they did not create incentives for new works to be created.

With piracy and struggles over intellectual property in the news daily, it is time to wonder about this issue, its relationship to freedom, property rights, and efficiency. You have to think seriously about where you stand.
In 2001 with the publication of Stephan Kinsella’s article and now monograph “Against Intellectual Property.” He made a strongly theoretical argument that ideas are not scarce, do not require rationing, are not diminished by their dissemination, and so cannot really be called property. All IP is unjust, he wrote. It is inconsistent with libertarian ethics and contrary to a free market. He favors the complete repeal of all intellectual-property laws.

Blackstone Group has been quietly acquiring hostile web domain names in an attempt to head off online criticism, at a time when political rhetoric in the US is building against private equity firms.
According to domain-registry records, MarkMonitor, a brand protection firm, has registered sites including blackstonesucks.com and schwarzmansucks.com, for its chief executive Stephen Schwarzman.

“On June 30, over six months later, Arab youth from across the region gathered in Tunis for the Creative Commons Arab regional meeting, an annual gathering of the Creative Commons (CC) communities from across the Arab world.
Creative Commons is a non-profit organisation that oversees the creation and evangelising of the licensing scheme used by Al Jazeera, the White House, Wikipedia and Flickr, among others.
Also at the meeting were Arab musicians and artists who created and remixed music and visual art in a celebration of “openness, creativity and innovation”.
Joi Ito, co-founder of Creative Commons, told Al Jazeera that while the core of organisation was technical and legal tools to enable sharing, the purpose of the Tunis meet was to enable the community and creators of content.
“It’s good to see our meetings evolve from technical and legal discussions to the creation of content, and also to the see the region’s understanding and acceptance of Creative Commons,” Ito said.”
