Fed Sent Bundesbank 172 Bad Delivery Gold Bars in 1968

The Tylers at ZH have discovered a 1968 memo from the BOE archives sent by the Bank of England to the Federal Reserve revealing that the Fed sent at least 172 bad delivery gold bars to London in the late 1960′s for safekeeping for the German Bundesbank as repayment for swaps.

The memo reveals that London assayers discovered that the Fed through Johnson Matthey sent the Deutsche Bundesbank 172 ”bad delivery” gold bars, and the ”out-turn of the re-melting showed a loss in fine ounces terms four times greater than the gross weight loss”.

The memo also indicates that the Bank of England was willing to keep the discovery private due to the fact that the gold was to be held for the Bundesbank. A declassified report discovered several weeks ago indicates that the Bundesbank subsequently repatriated 2/3rds of this gold in question from 2000-01.

German Calls for Gold Repatriation Intensify As Fed Refuses to Allow Inspection

Calls for Germany to repatriate its 1,536 tons of gold reserves held at the NY Fed are intensifying as Der Spiegel reports the Federal Reserve has refused to allow German inspectors to even view the country’s massive gold reservesin the interest of security and of the control process“.

We have stated repeatedly that with repatriation and/or audit requests completed or in progress by Venezuela, Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, The BOE and the Fed suddenly find themselves in a heap of trouble as the situation (and confidence that the Central banks actually still hold the tungsten gold reserves on deposit) is rapidly deteriorating.

Ned Naylor-Leyland: If Your Gold Reserves Are at the BOE or NY Fed, You Have No Chance of Getting Out With Any Metal!

The Doc welcomed back Cheviot Asset Management’s Ned Naylor-Leyland for an exclusive interview Sunday regarding the German gold repatriation, and how it will affect the physical gold market going forward.
In this MUST READ interview, Naylor-Leyland stated that when you take into account the fractional reserve accounting by the bullion banks, the 50 ton annual gold repatriation number is much larger in terms of the impact on the underlying market.

Naylor-Leyland believes Germany and the other central banks storing their gold reserves at the BOE and the NY Fed are essentially SOL, stating: If you’re holding your central bank gold reserves either in the Bank of England or the NY Fed, unless you are Theseus trying to find the Minotaur, you have no chance of getting out of there with any metal. The gold ownership chain of custody is severely tarnished and it’s obvious that it’s a problem. In light of what we know about the tightness of the physical market it appears the pressure is on, and it’s not likely to dissipate.

Bundesbank Official Statement on Gold Reserves: Gold Must Be Held Abroad for Liquidity

The Deutshe Bundesbank has responded to inquiries regarding holding the majority of Germany’s gold reserves in Paris, London, and New York.
The Bundesbank is apparently attempting to calm the panic over Germany’s gold instigated by the Federal Accountability Office, stating,

”We do not have the slightest doubt that our holdings in New York and Paris are also made up of the purest fine gold. We have at our disposal fully documented lists of the bars, and our partner central banks send us every year confirmation not only of the bars’ existence but also of their quality.’We had nothing but the best of experiences with our partners in New York, London and Paris...
There was never any doubt about the security of Germany’s gold. In future, we wish to continue to keep gold at international gold trading centres so that, when push comes to shove, we can have it available as a reserve asset as soon as possible.
For years, our gold has been stored by the highly esteemed central banks of the United States, Great Britain and France without provoking any complaints whatsoever – not by just any fly-by-night operators. Part of the debate in Germany has veered somewhat towards the absurd.”

CNBC MOPE: Actual Existence of Gold Reserves is Irrelevant, It’s the Bookkeeping That Matters!

With this week’s reports that Germany repatriated 1,000 tons of its gold reserves from the Bank of England between 2000-01, and is repatriating 150 tons of its gold reserves from the NY Fed over the next 3 years, clearly the awake participants have realized the music stopped long ago, and are grabbing their physical gold chairs.

It is now inevitable that an avalanche of central banks, hedge funds, and wealthy investors worldwide will begin to emulate Venezuela and Germany and request physical delivery of their unallocated (rehypothecated) ‘gold’.

In an amazingly weak and futile attempt to stem the inevitable onslaught of delivery and repatriation requests, CNBC’s senior editor John Carney has released an editorial claiming that it matters not whether the gold held at the NY Fed and the BOE is filled with tungsten, has been leased or swapped, or that it even exists- all that matters is the Fed’s bookkeeping ledger that states the gold is there.

Classified Report: Germany Withdrew 1000 Tons of Gold from BOE in 2000-01

On Monday, we reported that the German Financial Accountability Office had mandated the Bundesbank repatriate 150 tons of German gold from the NY Fed over the next 3 years. While this was to be expected and even inevitable in the wake of Venezuela’s gold repatriation in 2011 as well as global rehypothecation concerns, a previously classified report leaked today has revealed a much larger German gold repatriation has already occurred- from 2000-01!!

The previously classified report reveals that the Bundesbank withdrew nearly 1,000 tons of physical gold from the Bank of England in 2000-2001, decreasing Germany’s gold holdings in London from 1,440 tons to 500 tons.

Let that sink in for a moment. Germany withdrew 1,000 tons of physical gold from the Bank of England at the EXACT TIME that gold bottomed and began its decade long bull run. Did Germany pull the carpet out from under the cartel gold leasing party and ignite gold’s secular bull market in 2000?
