Ratings agencies ‘work for the dollar’ – EU commissioner
Ratings agencies “worked for the dollar” by constantly downgrading the credit ratings of European countries, European Industry Commissioner Antonio Tajani said on Monday. Ratings agencies “do not do it transparently and have made many mistakes,” Tajani told the Spanish daily, El Pais. The commissioner went even further, accusing such agencies of “blackmail,” referring to their announcement of downgrades before the EU summit on January 30, which is to discuss a tax on financial transactions. Tajani said he favored imposing rules on the three main ratings agencies based in the US. He also called for the establishment of a European ratings agency.
